Liverpool transfer news: Club director confirms agreement for Dominik Szoboszlai

Former AC Milan Chief Football Officer's Zvonimir Boban speaking to Calciomercato confirmed that his side had everything agreed with Red Bull Salzburg for the exciting Hungarian talent at the time. 'We could have also have taken Szoboszlai, everything was agreed: €20m of the clause with Salzburg,' Boban said. Advertisement At the time, Szoboszlai had just caught the attention of the world with his performances for Salzburg in the Austrian Bundesliga and in the Champions League. He looked like the next superstar from an exciting generation of Salzburg players. But a move fell through according to Boban because the club's hierarchy objected to it. "There too they denied and I said to myself: 'What the hell is this?'" Boban said. Milan of course famously fumbled another Hungarian superstar who could be heading to Liverpool this summer. Milos Kerkez was on the books at the Italian club before they agreed to sell him to AZ Alkmaar and the rest is history, with the youngster now establishing himself as one of the best left-backs in Europe at Bournemouth and attracting the attention of the rest of the world. Advertisement Considering the agreement must have been around the same time as Kerkez joined AC Milan, the duo could have even become teammates at the Italian club. Ironically, it's at Liverpool where they could unite their talents now. Understandably, we are delighted that a move never came to fruition for Szoboszlai. Liverpool have benefitted hugely from his arrival and it's difficult to imagine Slot's side without him - that's how important of a player he has become. Next season, we expect him to take on even more of a leadership role given he looks like he's really settled at Anfield now. Hopefully, Kerkez can follow in his footsteps and join him this summer in order to fill an important void at full-back.

Soccer great Zvonimir Boban returns as CEO to Croatian club where he was a pre-war hero

Soccer great Zvonimir Boban returns as CEO to Croatian club where he was a pre-war hero ZAGREB, Croatia (AP) — Croatia soccer great Zvonimir Boban is returning to the club where he became a hero for his actions on the field before the breakup of Yugoslavia. Boban will start his new job as CEO at Dinamo Zagreb on June 1, the club said at a news conference late Monday. Advertisement The 56-year-old Boban is taking his first job as a soccer executive since resigning as UEFA's chief of football in January 2024 in protest at his former ally Aleksander Čeferin's leadership as president. Boban is revered at Dinamo where he played for six years through 1991 and was captain on the day of a national derby game against Red Star Belgrade that became part of Croatian lore. In May 1990, when police clashed violently with fans in the stadium, Boban tried to protect supporters when he launched into a running high kick at a police officer. The incident revealed growing ethnic tensions that led to war across the Balkans for the next decade, and got Boban suspended from the Yugoslavia squad that went to the 1990 World Cup in Italy. Advertisement Boban's action then was 'symbolically considered to be the beginning of the struggle for Croatian independence,' Dinamo said Monday. Success at Milan One year later, Boban joined AC Milan where he stayed 10 years, winning four Serie A titles and the Champions League in 1994. Milan routed Barcelona 4-0 in the final. Boban worked at FIFA for three years as its deputy general secretary for soccer until leaving in 2019 for an executive role at Milan. He stayed less than a year. Boban rejoins his first club that looks set to lose the Croatian league title after seven years of domination. Dinamo fired coach Fabio Cannavaro last week with the team in third place, now seven points behind leader Rijeka. Advertisement Dinamo is likely to enter qualifying rounds of Europe's third-tier competition, the Conference League, having played in the Champions League this season. The Croatian champion placed 25th in the new league phase and was edged out of qualifying for the knockout rounds on goal difference. ___ AP soccer:

Boban: ‘Theo Hernandez is idle, indecent and unsporting'

Former Milan director Zvonimir Boban eviscerated Theo Hernandez after the costly red card in the Champions League play-off with Feyenoord. 'He's been doing this for years, it's indecent and unsporting.' The left-back was already on a yellow card for a futile foul in midfield, which would've ruled him out of the next game anyway. He then ran into the box after a give and go with Rafael Leao, but went down without contact from Givairo Read, receiving the second booking for simulation. It proved costly, as the Rossoneri crashed out of the Champions League 2-1 on aggregate. Boban, who is a former Milan player and director, was a pundit in the Sky Sport Italia studio and certainly did not hold back. 'Theo Hernandez has been doing this for years, I am stunned that nobody has already told him this or corrected his behaviour,' said Boban. 'The second yellow card is absurd. It is indecent, unsporting. You don't do that, there's no ifs and buts about it.' This is hardly the first time that the France international has been criticised for his attitude and it could affect the negotiations to extend his contract. 'Since the start of the season we have seen a Theo who is nothing to do with the player we knew. He is just idle,' continued Boban. 'At the start, he just wasn't very good at defending, then he improved a lot, but this season it feels like he isn't even trying. 'Morally, this is a serious error. Why do that simulation? He's a defender, he can charge forward with such pace, has great physicality, come on, going down like that…'
