NorthEast United FC and Shillong Lajong FC post contrasting wins to set up semifinal clash
Defending champion NorthEast United FC proved too good for local side Bodoland FC, posting a 4-0 win in the second quarterfinal of the 134th Durand Cup tournament at the SAI Stadium in Kokrajhar on Saturday to book a semifinal berth. Moroccan striker Alaaeddine Ajaraie proved his worth once again as he found the target twice while Andy Rodríguez and Parthib Gogoi struck once each to complete NorthEast United's impressive scoreline. NorthEast United will meet Shillong Lajong FC at the latter's home in Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Shillong in the first semifinal on Tuesday, which will be a virtual repeat of the previous edition's contest. Durand Cup Quarters: Shillong Lajong Face Indian Navy, Bodoland Take On NorthEast
Shillong Lajong FC faces Indian Navy FT, while Bodoland FC takes on NorthEast United FC in the Durand Cup quarterfinals. Lajong's home support and Navy's fitness are key. Local favourites Shillong Lajong FC will face the in-form Indian Navy FT, while Bodoland FC aims to continue their dream run against defending champions NorthEast United FC in the Durand Cup quarterfinals on Saturday. Lajong, under head coach Birendra Thapa, advanced to the knockouts as one of the best second-placed teams, showcasing both aggressive and gritty performances, including a significant victory over Rangdajied United and a close defeat to reigning champions NorthEast United. Attackers Everbrightson Sana and Phrangki Buam have been pivotal to Lajong's offensive play, with the team averaging over two goals per game this season. Home support in Shillong remains a crucial asset, with enthusiastic fan chants and drumming motivating Lajong to exceed expectations, especially in the knockout stages. Coach Thapa is clear about the team's approach. 'We play very aggressive and very attacking which is our biggest strength. We have the quality on the ground, and we'll use every bit of it. I always want to win and encourage the players to give their best and enjoy the game," said Thapa. Known for their physicality and fitness, the Navy team will aim to quiet the crowded Shillong stadium and execute their set-piece-heavy strategy. Head coach Ramesh Rai expressed confidence ahead of the match. 'Our preparation is good, the players are in shape, motivated, and heading in the right direction. Tomorrow will be a beautiful game, and we will fight. In football, we can never expect to win, but we can always promise a good game and a good fight," said Rai. Bodoland aims to extend historic run in Kokrajhar First-time quarterfinalists Bodoland FC, buoyed by local support, dominated the group stage with a perfect nine points, including an impressive 4-0 win over ITBP FT in heavy rain. Key players Timothi Narzary, Pedro Astray, and Gwgwmsar Gayary have excelled, including a 1-0 win against ISL side Punjab FC. The energy and excitement in Kokrajhar have created one of Durand Cup's most daunting home atmospheres. Coach Vikash Panthi has instilled a mix of attacking football and defensive discipline; the team's transition play and speedy wingers are expected to challenge NorthEast. 'Tactics will be displayed on the pitch during the match," said Panthi, keeping his strategy under wraps while hinting at a well-prepared game plan for the crucial clash. However, NorthEast United comes as the heavyweight favourites, aiming for consecutive Durand Cup titles after winning Group E, guided by coach Juan Pedro Benali's excellent tactical approach. Benali's tactical sharpness remains evident, with NorthEast United maintaining their attacking style from last season and blending experienced ISL players with emerging talent. The ISL side has a seasoned core, with Moroccan striker Alaaeddine Ajaraie in top form. NorthEast's unbeaten run in the tournament underscores their pedigree and squad depth, but Bodoland's fearless momentum and local advantage could lead to a thrilling match.
