Aaron-Wooi Yik vow to turn Danish threat into Danish toast in Bangkok final
KUALA LUMPUR: Asian champions Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik have been in fearsome form at the Thailand Open, but their efforts could count for nothing when they face Danish giantkillers William Kryger Boe-Christian Faust Kjaer in the men's doubles final on Sunday. World No. 75 Boe-Kjaer have been the surprise package of the tournament, notching several notable victories en route to the final. They stunned Malaysia's world No. 7 Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun in the second round on Wednesday, before causing a major upset by dismantling world No. 4 and top seeds Fajar Alfian-Rian Ardianto of Indonesia 21-13, 21-12 in Saturday's semi-finals. Aaron-Wooi Yik Aaron-Wooi Yik, meanwhile, booked their final spot with a clinical 21-17, 21-13 win over Thailand's Dechapol Puavaranukroh-Kittinupong Kedren at the Nimibutr Stadium. The Malaysians have been sharp, deceptive and efficient throughout the tournament and are now eyeing their first back-to-back title following their triumph at the Badminton Asia Championships in March. The duo's resurgence has been credited to national men's doubles coach Herry IP, whose tactical tweaks have helped refine their all-round game. Wooi Yik noted that court conditions have been a factor in Bangkok. "We played three games in the first round, and the draught in the stadium is quite strong," he said. "Maybe the conditions will suit the Danish pair. We'll need to analyse their game thoroughly before the final." Aaron-Wooi Yik did beat Boe-Kjaer in the opening round of the Indonesia Masters in January, but Sunday's final could be a far trickier task with the Danes currently in the form of their lives. "We were just talking at the start of the tournament about winning one match, and now we're in the final. It's crazy," said Kjaer. Boe, meanwhile, is out for revenge. "We played them at the Indonesia Masters and lost. This is our biggest match ever. We've got everything to play for and need to enjoy it — one point at a time."
