He said the purchase of the additional aircraft was part of reciprocal negotiations between Malaysia and the United States (US). "In addressing trade deficit with the US, the government will make major procurements including the purchase of Boeing aircraft. Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) is committed to purchase 30 Boeing aircraft valued at US$9.5 billion in the first phase and an additional 30 Boeing aircrafts valued at US$9.5 billion for the second phase,' he said during a special press conference regarding the tariff announcement by the United States. The US had earlier announced a reduction in tariffs on Malaysian exports to 19 per cent from the announced 25 per cent. Previously, MAG had announced the purchase of new Boeing aircraft to strengthen Malaysia's position as a major player in the global aviation industry. MAG had announced the acquisition of 30 new aircraft directly from Boeing as part of its aircraft modernisation strategy. The order includes 18 Boeing 737-8s and 12 Boeing 737-10s powered by CFM LEAP-1B engines with an option for 30 more 737s. The orders for hundreds of Boeing jets were announced through deals with Japan, the United Arab Emirates, Indonesia, Cambodia, Bangladesh and other countries as part of negotiations to reduce US tariffs. - Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has reaffirmed its commitment to purchase an additional 30 Boeing aircraft worth US$9.5 billion, marking the second phase of a major procurement deal with the United States. Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz confirmed the move as part of reciprocal trade negotiations between the two nations. 'The government is addressing the trade deficit with the US through strategic procurements, including these aircraft purchases,' he said during a press conference following the US tariff adjustment announcement. The US recently reduced tariffs on Malaysian exports from 25 per cent to 19 per cent. Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) had earlier committed to buying 30 Boeing jets valued at US$9.5 billion in the first phase. The latest order brings the total investment to US$19 billion. The initial purchase included 18 Boeing 737-8s and 12 Boeing 737-10s, powered by CFM LEAP-1B engines, with an option for 30 additional aircraft. This deal aligns with Malaysia's strategy to modernise its aviation fleet and strengthen its position in the global aviation market. As of June 30, 2025, AL's fleet was comprised of 495 owned aircraft and 53 managed aircraft, with 241 new aircraft on order from Airbus and Boeing set to deliver through 2031. Aircraft Investments Delivered 12 new aircraft from AL's orderbook including six Airbus A220s, one A321neo, two Boeing 737-8s, one Boeing 787-9, and two Boeing 787-10s. Aircraft investments totaled approximately $890 million, with the majority occurring in the second half of the quarter. Sales Sold 4 aircraft to third-party buyers. Aircraft sales proceeds for the quarter totaled approximately $126 million.
