Hong Kong's Cathay Pacific unveils deal to buy 14 Boeing jets
The airline has "exercised the purchase rights... to purchase 14 Boeing 777-9 aircraft; and... secured the right to acquire up to seven additional Boeing 777-9 aircraft", it said in a filing to the Hong Kong stock exchange. The new order expects the aircraft to be delivered by 2034, according to a separate filing. Cathay Pacific made the announcement as it reported its attributable profit rose slightly to HK$3.65 billion (US$4.65 million), benefiting from a pick-up in travel demand in Asia. Chair Patrick Healy heralded a "solid financial performance" in the filing. The company's passenger airlines, including Cathay Pacific and Hong Kong Express, have launched or announced 19 new destinations so far in 2025, with "more to come", he said. Cathay now flies to more than 100 passenger destinations globally, he added. However, the company warned that its lowcost airlines are facing short-term challenges as pick-up in bookings is "yet to return to normal levels".

Cathay Pacific orders 14 more 777X jets, half-year profit ticks higher
Hong Kong's Cathay Pacific Airways on Wednesday (Aug 6) ordered 14 more Boeing 777-9 jets and reported a 1 per cent increase in first-half profit on the back of growing passenger numbers, lower fuel prices and a steady cargo performance. The plane order exercises options secured as part of a 2013 order by the Hong Kong-based carrier for 21 of the next-generation wide-body jets, and adds options to purchase another seven in the future, the airline said. Cathay said the 14 jets had a list price of US$8.1 billion, but it had secured significant discounts, as is customary for major airlines. The long-delayed 777-9, Boeing's latest version of its 777 plane, has not yet been certified by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration. Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg said last month the model is undergoing flight testing and the planemaker hopes to start deliveries next year. Cathay said in March it was expecting its first 777-9 delivery in early 2027. The airline reported a first-half profit of HK$3.65 billion (US$465 million), but warned of an uncertain outlook in the cargo market and continued short-term challenges for its low-cost carrier, HK Express.
