Russia deepens influence in Africa with strategic partnership in Somalia

Russia's diplomatic efforts in Africa have reached new heights. Moscow is now strengthening its ties with Somalia, a strategically important country in the Horn of Africa. Mikhail Bogdanov, Russia's Deputy Foreign Minister for the Middle East and African Countries, arrived in Mogadishu on Saturday for a high-level visit. He was officially received at Aden Abdullah International Airport by Somalia's Deputy Foreign Minister, Isaac Mohamud Mursal. Both emphasized the importance of promoting bilateral cooperation. The visit marks Somalia's addition to Russia's growing list of African partners as the Kremlin strengthens its influence in Africa through economic diplomacy, security cooperation, and political engagement. In a statement after the meeting, Mursal reaffirmed Somalia's commitment to deepening relations with Russia. According to the Deputy Foreign Minister, Somalia is ready to deepen cooperation in energy, infrastructure, and trade. "We are pleased to welcome Deputy Foreign Minister Bogdanov to Somalia and look forward to expanding our partnership in the coming years," Mursal said. Somalia's location on key sea routes and its efforts to rebuild after years of conflict make it a key partner for countries vying for influence in Africa. Russia's engagement in Somalia underscores Moscow's broader efforts to forge alliances in underserved but strategically important regions—a pattern that has intensified across Africa in recent years. Although Bogdanov's visit comes at a time Russia is trying to grow its influence in Africa, the discussions are expected to pave the way for greater Russian involvement in Somalia's economic and security development.

Russia and Somalia pledge security cooperation

Russia's special presidential envoy for the Middle East and Africa, Mikhail Bogdanov, and Somali officials have agreed to expand cooperation between the two countries in security, politics, trade, and economic areas, the Foreign Ministry in Moscow announced on Sunday. According to a ministry statement, Bogdanov held talks with Somali Foreign Minister Ahmed Moallim Fiki while on an official visit to the East African country, where he was received by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. 'During the exchange of views on current international and regional issues, including taking into account Somalia's membership in the UN Security Council in 2025-2026, special attention was paid to the tasks of interaction on issues of ensuring peace and security in the Horn of Africa, with an emphasis on the need to quickly eradicate the terrorist threat in the region,' the ministry stated. The two sides also discussed the progress of implementing a memorandum of consultations signed by their foreign ministries in May 2023, as well as the upcoming 65th anniversary of Russian-Somali diplomatic relations on September 11. Somalia continues to face security threats posed by the Al-Qaeda-affiliated Al-Shabaab group, which has been carrying out attacks targeting civilians, government officials, and security forces for more than a decade. Mogadishu, supported by African Union peacekeepers and international partners, has been engaged in ongoing military operations aimed at reclaiming territory and stabilizing the country. FM H.E. Amb. @AhmedMoFiqi, hosted on Sunday a luncheon in #Mogadishu in honor of the Deputy Foreign Minister of the #Russian Federation and Special Representative of the President for the Middle East and African Countries, H.E. Mikhail Bogdanov.#Somalia#Somali# Somali authorities have intensified campaigns to weaken the operational capacity of the militants following renewed assaults in recent months. Last month, terrorists killed an unknown number of civilians in a bomb attack on President Mohamud's convoy as he traveled through the capital. The incident occurred only one week after Al-Shabaab gunmen attacked a hotel in Beledweyne, central Somalia, where local leaders and government officials had met to plan an offensive against the terrorist organization. Just hours after the meeting with Bogdanov on Sunday, Somali Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre reshuffled his cabinet, appointing Foreign Minister Fiqi Ahmed as the new defense minister.

Russia and Sudan discuss crisis in African state

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov has held talks with the Sudanese ambassador to Moscow, Mohamed Siraj, to discuss the ongoing conflict in the African country, the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday. The discussions were held at Siraj's request and primarily focused on the military and political crisis in Sudan, 'including the urgent need for a ceasefire and the provision of humanitarian assistance to the civilian population,' according to the ministry. In addition, Bogdanov and Siraj discussed the prospects of enhancing the traditionally friendly ties between Russia and Sudan, the ministry's press service noted. In an interview with Izvestia earlier in April, Siraj expressed Sudan's ambition to elevate relations with Russia to a strategic partnership. He emphasized that Khartoum views Moscow as a steadfast friend and is counting on comprehensive cooperation across all sectors. 'We [Sudan] are counting on a meaningful and vital partnership with Russia across all areas, which will enable it to make a clear and direct contribution to the reconstruction of Sudan,' the Sudanese ambassador stated. Siraj further pointed out that Moscow had consistently backed the Sudanese government since the onset of hostilities in the African country. 'Although the main military operation in Khartoum has been completed, significant and necessary military operations are still underway to clear the country of terrorist forces that have committed all kinds of violations against the civilian population, especially in the Darfur region in western Sudan,' Siraj stated. Since April 2023, Sudan has been gripped by fierce fighting between the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), with both factions vying for control amid a stalled transition to civilian rule. Estimates of fatalities vary, although research from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine suggests that over 61,000 people were killed in Khartoum state alone during the first 14 months of the conflict. Data from the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project (ACLED) indicated more than 28,700 fatalities by late November, including over 7,500 civilians killed in targeted attacks.
