Marilyn Monroe's Jeans Go for $52K at Auction Along with a Rare Item from Her Makeup Collection (Exclusive)
Marilyn Monroe knew how to be fabulous and functional. Among the items that were part of Bold Luxury: The Limelight Edit at Julien's Auctions was a Pandora minaudiere evening purse owned by the late starlet. PEOPLE got a look at the chic, versatile piece ahead of the auction. "Here, it's this little compact. You can see her powder puff and there's still a little bit of powder on there," Martin Nolan, Co-Founder and Executive Director of Julien's Auctions demonstrated for PEOPLE during our preview. Each compartment of the palm-sized powerhouse featured a different function — handy for a woman on the go. So she could call a cab, call a friend. It also has her comb and her lipstick," he shares. "There's still lipstick in here," he demonstrated, carefully winding the cosmetic tube. In another compartment, Monroe had a stash of eight Philip Morris cigarettes. The handy accessory was admired by many, but was not sold at the auction. Dee and Tommy Hilfiger contributed the cowboy boots Monroe wore in The Misfits, where she played Roslyn Taber. They also included the jeans she wore in River of No Return. The items were brought back to the auction block after being part of the personal collection of the Hilfigers. "Tommy bought them at the Christie's original Marilyn Monroe estate auction in 1999," Nolan explains. "There was three pairs in the lot. One pair he gave to Naomi Campbell. One pair he gave to Britney Spears, and one pair he kept. He had it in his office as he moved to various places, framed and now he's letting go of them." The cowboy boots sold for $78,000, while the jeans went for $52,000. Both on screen and in public, Monroe was known for being as glamorous as could be, swathed in luxurious gowns that would go down in history as some of the most iconic of all time. She often wore elegant looks created by costume designers in her films — and would pull some of the gowns for red carpet premieres, too. Cher's Famously Revealing 'If I Could Turn Back Time' Outfit Sells For $162,500
The famously revealing costume worn by Cher in her If I Could Turn Back Time video has fetched an astonishing $162,500 (£125,582), more than double its estimated value, at a star-studded auction in Beverly Hills. The outfit, designed by legendary fashion maestro Bob Mackie, was worn by Cher in the video for her 1989 hit. The sexy look has since become one of the most recognisable in pop culture history. The striking ensemble, which features a sheer black bodysuit and elaborate embellishments, was the highlight of Julien's Auctions' 'Bold Luxury: The Limelight Edit' event, attracting fierce bidding from collectors around the world. Held at The Peninsula Beverly Hills, the auction saw more than 200 items go under the hammer, including rare pieces once owned and worn by Marilyn Monroe, Britney Spears, and other Hollywood icons. Among the other standout sales was a Bob Mackie-designed burlesque outfit worn by Britney Spears in 2001, which sold for $78,000 (£60,280) - over 13 times its original estimate of $6,000 (£4,637). Meanwhile, a dress worn by Marilyn Monroe at a 1960 press conference for The Misfits also reached $78,000 (£60,280), proving the enduring appeal of vintage Hollywood memorabilia. One of the more unexpected highlights of the sale was a pair of jeans worn by Monroe in the 1954 film River of No Return, which sold for $52,000 (£40,190). The jeans had been part of a private collection belonging to fashion moguls Dee and Tommy Hilfiger, adding an extra layer of provenance to the sought-after item.

Marilyn Monroe's purse, Britney Spears's bra, Cher's cheeky 'If I Could Turn Back Time' bodysuit are up for auction — and we got a sneak peek
It's not every day that you get to go through the purse of an icon like Marilyn Monroe. The cylinder-shaped gold-tone metal minaudière with floral gem designs is one of 204 items up for bid in Julien's Bold Luxury: The Limelight Edit auction and Yahoo Entertainment got a preview of the offerings. For the purse, which slides into a black velvet cover sling that dangled from Monroe's wrist, it was a hands-on experience. Martin Nolan, co-founder and executive director of the auction house, gave us a tour of its contents. The purse is expected to fetch between $100,000 and $200,000. Within the Pandora by Wadsworth clutch's three compartments were a makeup compact (powder still on the puff) and mirror, a tube of vibrant red lipstick (Dorothy Gray's 'Jewel of India'), a comb, eight cigarettes (Philip Morris limited special blend, nonfiltered) and two dimes (dated 1943 and 1945) for phone calls. The 'very special' bag, which is totally 'incognito' when tucked into the sling, is what Monroe would carry when she went out for the evening, Nolan said. 'It's a work of art — like a Monet, Picasso or van Gogh' as well as a 'great conversation piece.' See for yourself — The Yodel is the go-to source for daily news, entertainment and feel-good stories. While the Hollywood superstar was only 36 when she died of a barbiturate overdose in 1962, she had a will in place that left her physical properties and 75% of her intellectual property to her acting coach, Lee Strasberg, and his wife, Paula, who were like surrogate parents to her. The estate of Lee Strasberg sold the bag and other items through Julien's in 2016. There was a bidding war between designer Tommy Hilfiger and music executive Tommy Mottola over the purse. Hilfiger, a collector of some of Monroe's most famous fashions, won with a bid of $187,500. Hilfiger and his wife are now selling the bag, with a portion of the proceeds going to Next for Autism. That is just one item up for bid in the lot right now online leading up to a live auction on March 27 — and we didn't hate having to examine the historical pieces. There are other old-Hollywood offerings, including more from Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor and newer pieces that previously graced the bods of Cher, Britney Spears, Amy Winehouse and Victoria Beckham. While we'd wager that not many people would be able to comfortably fit into this ensemble, it's long been a hot commodity. Cher wore the skin-tight, sheer, embellished, spandex and mesh catsuit, which was designed by Bob Mackie, with a leather motorcycle jacket decorated with rhinestones on her 2002 'The Farewell Tour' when she performed 'If I Could Turn Back Time.' It's a re-creation of the Mackie piece Cher wore in the 1989 video for the song, which landed her in trouble with the Navy, and an "embarrassed" Mackie denied designing it due to its extreme exposure. In February, Cher, 78, wore another version of it, also by Mackie, during her SNL50: The Homecoming Concert performance (catching Kevin Costner's eye). Cher first sold the outfit in 2006 for $60,000. The woman bidding was driving at the time and crashed her car but insisted that they 'keep bidding' on her behalf. In the years since Cher parted with the original, she has actually rented it back to wear at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards and on her 2014 tour. Nolan said Cher exchanged six concert tickets as payment. It sold again in 2021 for $115,200. 'It's my third time bringing this to auction, and it doubles in price each time,' Nolan said. Mackie is parting with this four-piece burlesque ensemble — bra, underwear and armbands — worn by the pop star. He originally designed it for the 1981 Las Vegas production of Jubilee! and Spears later 'borrowed them and flaunted them' for her 2001 HBO Dream Within a Dream Tour concert special, Nolan said. 'It's timeless and could be worn by a rock star today.' The undergarments were handmade in France using a blush fabric for a nude illusion. Spears wore them over jeans, while performing her hit '...Baby One More Time.' In her memoir, she called it her 'best tour,' crediting the 'brilliant' minds behind it and being styled properly. The set is expected to sell for between $6,000 and $8,000. A replica of the jeans — Levi's 501 medium wash, designed by Corbin Struck, with a 30-inch waist — are also up for bid. La Liz was known for her jewelry, and there are several gem offerings in the sale, including a Theo Fennell diamond and gold Star of David pendant, a 1930s art deco emerald and diamond brooch and this lion-themed ruby and diamond and gold necklace and earring set (value: a roaring $200,000 to $300,000). A standout piece of clothing, however, is Irene Sharraf's saffron yellow silk chiffon evening robe embroidered with ibis and snakes that Taylor wore in 1963's Cleopatra. It was one of 65 costumes designed for the screen legend, and she wore it in a scene in which Cleopatra found out her lover, played by on-off real-love Richard Burton, had an affair and she started stabbing their bed with a knife. The robe was modeled by Kim Kardashian in Harper's Bazaar's March 2011 issue, loaned to the reality star by Taylor herself. Taylor died that year at the age of 79. The final price is anticipated to be between $20,000 and $30,000. There's also a 14-carat gold and diamond purse owned by Taylor, which she wore at the Lido premiere with then-husband Burton in 1964. On the outside, diamonds spell out 'Liz,' and inside there's a mirrored lid. It comes in a lavender pouch and should sell in the $100,000 to $200,000 range. Hilfiger is also selling other Monroe items tied to the 1961 film. To start are her size 7½ Hyer-brand tan leather boots with yellow and green stitching and block heels that were worn in what was her last completed film. She famously screamed 'Murderers!' in a scene in which she had on the footwear. For the past 20 years, they've been in a shadowbox in Hilfiger's office after he bought them in 1999 for $75,000, promising to let Demi Moore, who was also at the auction at the time, wear them. This original Jean Louis painted-silk jersey cocktail dress — tiny in person, once again exploding any claims that Monroe was in any way plus-size — was worn by the star at the movie's press conference in 1960. The fabric was a favorite of hers, according to Nolan, and the dress should fetch between $60,000 and $80,000. Louis famously created the nude illusion dress Monroe wore to serenade 'Mr. President' John F. Kennedy in May 1962. That dress, designed based on a sketch by a 22-year-old Mackie, sold for $4.8 million in 2016. It was later worn by Kardashian at the 2022 Met Gala, drawing criticism. A pair of jeans from the 1954 film worn by Monroe and her stunt double Helen Thurston are also being passed along by Hilfiger, who displayed them in the lobby of his office building, according to Nolan, and are expected to draw between $30,000 and $50,000. Sporting a JCPenney label, the ziip-fly bottoms are taken in at the waistband and hips to perfectly fit Marilyn's exact measurements. These are one of three pairs of jeans Hilfiger bought. He previously gifted the two others to Spears and Naomi Campbell. One of the items that's more in reach than a $200,000 purse are stilettos worn by the British singer on BBC's Strictly Come Dancing in 2009. Winehouse, who died in 2011 at age 27, wore the round-toe platform pumps while performing backup for her goddaughter, Dionne Bromfield, on the show. She was later photographed wearing them at a pub in London's Camden with boyfriend, Reg Traviss. They're a size 38 and are being sold by a friend of the star, with an expected return between $1,000 and $2,000. There are additional items from the 'Back to Black' singer expected to net under $1,000 each. That includes purses (Vivienne Westwood and Louis Vuitton), black Fendi ballet flats and a Juicy Couture necklace. The auction is already underway, with the live portion taking place on March 27 at 1 p.m. ET at the Peninsula Beverly Hills.

Rare Hermès Birkin Framboise Alligator Bag Goes Up for Auction at Julien's
A limited-edition Hermès Birkin is on the block as part of an auction hosted by Julien's. Entitled 'Bold Luxury: The Limelight Edit,' the full lot includes items once owned by Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor and Cher. Two Birkins are for sale under the latest Bold Luxury banner, with the first being a black 25cm Epsom leather Birkin with gold-plated hardware, dated to 2021. The second, however, is much more rare: a Framboise Matte Alligator Birkin with palladium hardware, also 25cm and made in 2021. More from WWD Hermès Signs Lease for Nashville Store Jane Birkin's Original Birkin Bag Goes On Display in France for the First Time: Meet the Handbag's Current Owner Hermès Bucks Luxury Downturn as Q4 Sales Jump 18% The name of its pink red hue, Framboise, translates to raspberry. The body of the bag is made from Togo leather, a durable textile that Hermès introduced in 1997. Its alligator flap, handles and clochette, however, make it a rare find, as Birkins crafted with exotic skins are produced in very limited quantities. Per Sotheby's, matte alligator Birkins are increasing in popularity and value. Alligator skins are naturally shiny, meaning that it takes additional labor — i.e. buffing — to create a matte finish. Matte Hermès bags are also less likely to show scratches or water marks, making them a more durable option. Combined, these factors could affect the Framboise Birkin's resale price, which is currently estimated at a high of $40,000. Released in 1984, the Hermès Birkin has become a universal status symbol. Its namesake derives from the late actress and singer Jane Birkin, who famously sketched the initial design herself. After meeting Hermès executive Jean-Louis Dumas on an airplane, she drew her Birkin blueprint on a sick bag. In need of a carry-all suitable for young mothers, she based it on one of the brand's other popular models. 'I said, 'Why don't you make a bag that's four times the Kelly that you can leave open?' Because girls like to have things on the end of their arm to put all their stuff in,' Birkin told CNN's Christiane Amanpour in 2020. Dumas added upon Birkin's sketch by taking inspiration from Hermès' Haut à Courroies, a favorite of her partner Serge Gainsbourg. Dumas eventually gifted the actress a black calfskin prototype of the Birkin, suggesting that the new purse be named after her. 'You know, when I'm dead, not only will people remember me for 'Je t'aime moi non plus,' but they'll possibly only talk about the bag,' Birkin said in the same CNN interview. Julien's inaugural Bold Luxury sale took place last fall and featured multiple Hermès handbags. Celebrity highlights included a pair of Sarah Jessica Parker's stilettos from 'Sex and the City' and a silk scarf worn by Jennifer Garner in '13 Going on 30.' Elizabeth Taylor collected some impressive jewelry pieces over the course of her life. The late Oscar-winning actress, who died in 2011, owned a bevy of jewels from emeralds to diamonds, rubies and many more. Now, pieces from the actress' collection are up for auction as part of Julien's Bold Luxury: The Limelight Edit auction, which will take place March 27 at the Peninsula Beverly Hills beginning at 10 a.m. PT. More from WWD EXCLUSIVE: Winona Ryder, Iman and Others Star in Pandora's Latest 'Be Love' Campaign EXCLUSIVE: Responsible Jewellery Council Launches Standard for Lab-grown Stones The 20 Best Spring Dresses to Wear From Day to Night 'Bold Luxury is not just an auction — it's an invitation to step into the limelight and own a tangible piece of cultural history,' said Martin Nolan, cofounder and executive director of Julien's Auctions. 'From the timeless elegance of Elizabeth Taylor to Marilyn Monroe's cinematic legacy, these rare collectibles continue to captivate the world and redefine the intersection of fashion and investment.' Below, WWD breaks down some of the highlights from the treasure trove of pieces previously owned by Elizabeth Taylor. Taylor's ruby, diamond and gold necklace and earring set features a circular-cut diamond with a marquise-cut ruby and a gold lion's face. The lion's face holds in its teeth a circular-cut diamond hoop. The necklace also features a four-strand ruby bead choker, joined by a circular-cut diamond and gold clasp. The earrings, featuring the same gold lion motif, feature detachable ruby tassels. The set's value is estimated between $200,000 to $300,000. The Art Deco emerald and diamond brooch dates back to roughly 1935. As described by Julien's, the piece features a pavé-set scroll bordered with old mine-cut and European-cut diamonds and emeralds framed in an open-work of the scroll; each emerald varies in cut and size. The stones are mounted in platinum and gold. The brooch's value is estimated between $100,000 and $200,000. Taylor was seen with her gold and diamond evening purse in December 1964, when the actress and her then-husband, Richard Burton, attended the Lido premiere, which was a burlesque show, in Paris, per Julien's. The handbag features a wedge-shaped design with a woven gold basket. The bag also features a diamond 'Liz' plaque. The bag's value is estimated between $100,000 and $200,000. Malcolm Forbes gifted Taylor this glittering diamond brooch. The piece features pear-shaped diamond clusters and two scroll-like bands of baguette-cut diamonds. The brooch's estimated value is between $20,000 and $30,000. Taylor's diamond and gold Star of David pendant necklace was designed by Theo Fennell. Taylor converted to Judaism in 1959, following the death of her husband Michael Todd and upon her marriage to Eddie Fisher. The necklace is described by Julien's as a detachable swivel pendant with circular-cut diamond and gold Star of David, which is mounted in 18-karat yellow and white gold. The pendant hangs on a rope-style chain. The necklace's value is estimated between $20,000 and $30,000.
