First Look: Janhvi Kapoor Makes her Cannes Film Festival Debut

Janhvi is the 28-year-old daughter of Bollywood producer Boney Kapoor and late actress Sridevi. Her sister Khushi Kapoor is also an actress, as is her cousin, Sonam Kapoor. She has appeared in over a dozen films since making her acting debut in 2018, and has also starred on runways for labels like Rahul Mishra, Amit Aggarwal and Kalki at Lakme Fashion Week in India. For her first-ever red carpet look at Cannes, she placed her trust in Tahiliani and her cousin – stylist Rhea Kapoor – to conceptualise the outfit. 'I think she [Rhea] really wanted to bring out a side of me that hasn't been explored much, and focus more on my face and on how she sees me,' Janhvi explains. Making the dress: Tarun Tahiliani Making the dress: Tarun Tahiliani For both of the Kapoors, it was important that Janhvi wear an Indian designer for her first Cannes appearance. 'I really think it's their time to shine. I mean, I've known this for a really long time,' says the actress. 'A lot of the textiles that are put on these international garments, on these international red carpets, on these huge Western actors or huge global stars from all around the world have been textiles that were manufactured and created in India by Indian and craftsmen. So I think it is high time that's put on a global stage and our designers are given the kind of credit that they deserve," she adds, pointing out that the Met Gala last month saw a great turnout of Indian designers, from Sabyasachi to Gaurav Gupta and Prabal Gurung. 'I think I look the best and I feel my most comfortable in Indian clothes. And if I'm being put on a global stage like this, I'd like to feel my most comfortable and confident. So it was honestly a very organic decision for me.' 'Specifically for the film that I've come here with, it was important for me to stay in touch with my roots,' continues Janhvi, who is in Cannes for the premiere of her film, Homebound, directed by Neeraj Ghaywan. Also starring Ishaan Khatter and Vishal Jethwa, it tells the story of two friends from a village in North India who find their friendship impacted when they pursue jobs as police officers. Janhvi says that although the plot is rooted in India, it has global relevance. 'It's a story that I think is the need of the hour. It invites people to introspect at being perpetrators, or at the receiving end of any sort of social exclusion, which I think is a human tragedy that's occurring all around the world in different countries," she shares. "It's an observational piece on different sorts of social hierarchies, and a study of human nature.' This content can also be viewed on the site it originates from. Keeping these themes in mind, she gave Rhea a brief about the film, and expressed the kind of energy she wanted to embody, in terms of being taken 'a little more seriously' for her Cannes debut. And while Janhvi acknowledges that fashion is a massive aspect of the festival, she points out that the event is ultimately about the movies being honoured. 'I really wanted the attention to stay on the fact that we're here representing a film,' she says. 'It's a huge opportunity to even be in the vicinity of so many artists that I admire and look up to, and the fact that our movie is in competition is nerve-wracking, but very exciting. I'm thrilled, and constantly pinching myself.'

BIG setback to Boney Kapoor's Noida Film City project as officials object to layout plan due to...

YEIDA has objected to the proposed Noida Film City project layout plan submitted by Boney Kapoor and Bhutani Group. (File) In a major setback to Bollywood producer Boney Kapoor's ambitious Noida Film City project, several Uttar Pradesh government officials have objected to the project's proposed layout plan which was submitted by Kapoor last week. According to media reports, the developers' plan includes building movie theatres, lodgings, and other amenities on green spaces that had been initially designated for parks, playgrounds, and multipurpose open areas. YEIDA objects Bhutani Group's layout plan According to a report by the Times of India (TOI), officials said the layout plan was unclear about these green spaces, while noting that the green areas are not clearly defined zones, but mainly occur alongside roads, making them difficult to demarcate. Additionally, the draft layout has placed several commercial structures like hotels and warehouses in the industrial zone, which is in contravention of authorised land use guidelines, the report said. The Bhutani Group, a consortium headed by Boney Kapoor, which acquired the Noida Film City contract after international tenders for the project failed to draw any bidders, has also not submitted a structural stability certificate or the required no-objection certificate (NOC) from the fire department, TOI reported. No permission for commercial structures till… Under the approved land use plan, 155 acres have been designated for industrial purposes in the first phase, including a film institute on 21 acres and related infrastructure, such as studios and production units, across 134 acres, while the remaining 75 acres are reserved for commercial development, to be undertaken only in later phases of the project. 'Right now, the layout is not in accordance with the sanctioned land use. Green areas have not been shown properly and are fragmented,' the report quoted Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA) CEO Arun Vir Singh as saying. Singh explained that as per the UP government-approved land use plan, 15% of the total project area, specifically the first phase spanning 230 acres in Sector 2, must remain as green space. According to another senior YEIDA official, the authority will not grant permission for commercial structures like malls, hotels, or resorts, unless at least 15% of the core film-related infrastructure is completed by the developer. Groundbreaking ceremony before June 30, says Boney Kapoor On Monday, Boney Kapoor and Bhutani Group CEO Ashish Bhutani met YEIDA official to sort out the objections, who have asked the developers to submit a revised, phase-wise development plan. 'Only Phase 1, covering the industrial area, will be considered for approval right now. The remaining Phases 2 and 3 must also be shown clearly in the updated map,' Singh said. After the meeting, Boney Kapoor announced that the groundbreaking ceremony of the Noida Film City project would take place before June 30, 2025, stating that development will start with building of core infrastructure, including a film institute and film studios, 'which must be completed within three years'. 'Once we achieve a certain level of construction of the film studios and institute, commercial development may start with YEIDA's permission,' Kapoor said. 'There has been no change in the green area, and it is intact as per the approved plan. As far as the NOC and structural stability certificate are concerned, they will be submitted to YEIDA when we seek approval for the building plans.' He added that the developers had already addressed the Authority's concerns and resubmitted the plan. 'We are hopeful of getting the layout sanctioned by the end of this week,' Bhutani said. 'There has been no change in the green area, and it is intact as per the approved plan. As far as the NOC and structural stability certificate are concerned, they will be submitted to YEIDA when we seek approval for the building plans,' Ashish Bhutani said while responding to YEIDA's objections. Bhutani asserted they have already addressed YEIDA's concerns and resubmitted the plan, and expressed hope that the new layout will be sanctioned by the end of this week.

UP: Upcoming Film Institute to offer training in acting, script writing

Lucknow, May 28 (UNI) The upcoming International Film City near the Yamuna Expressway will offer professional training across a wide range of disciplines such as acting, script writing, editing, VFX, camera operation, lighting, fashion, media and mass communication, official sources said here on Wednesday. Sources said that after completing their training, students will be provided employment opportunities within the Film City itself, thereby fostering local job creation and strengthening the region's creative economy. Sources said that the International Film City is being developed in Sector 21 under the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA). "In its first phase, the project will cover 230 acres and involve an investment of Rs 1,510 crore. The construction of the Film City will be carried out by Bayview Bhutani Film City Private Limited, a consortium led by renowned Bollywood filmmaker Boney Kapoor and the Bhutani Group. The first phase of construction, including multiple studios and the film institute, is expected to be completed within the next three years," they said. The company's General Manager, Rajeev Arora, said that this Film Institute will be one of its kind. "In the first phase, it will be built over an area of 3 lakh square feet. The institute will have modern classrooms, studios, editing suites and a VR lab equipped with the latest technologies. Students will get hands-on experience working on real film projects and will also have access to the latest film-making technologies," he said. He said that local youth will be given priority in both training and employment. "Special preference will be given to the youth from the Yamuna Expressway region and nearby areas, while young people from other parts of Uttar Pradesh will also benefit," he said. Arora said that training local youth and offering them jobs will be more cost-effective than hiring staff from Mumbai. "This will help create jobs within the film city in areas like studios, production and more," he said. The institute will offer courses in acting, story writing, script writing, editing, camera operation, lighting, spot boy duties, VFX, fashion and mass communication. Besides, it will provide training and facilities related to film music. There will be workshops, internships and guest lectures in partnership with production houses, allowing students to learn directly from industry experts. The Film City will also host movie premieres, so that production houses don't have to travel to other cities to launch their films. A comprehensive resource centre will be set up with films, scripts and academic materials, which will serve as a valuable asset for both students and filmmakers. The institute will also organise film festivals, exhibitions and competitions, giving students opportunities to showcase their talent. These events will not only enhance creativity but also help students build industry connections and gain exposure. The campus will also include facilities like hostels, a cafeteria, a health centre and recreational areas for students. These amenities will provide a comfortable and inspiring environment where students can focus on learning and developing their creativity. The institute will not only become a hub for training and employment for young people, but it will also help establish UP as a major centre for the film and entertainment industry. UNI AB GNK 1401

Yeida rejects Boney Kapoor firm's Film City layout plans; seeks revisions

GREATER NOIDA: The Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (Yeida) on Tuesday said it has rejected the Boney Kapoor-led firm's latest request for approving its layout plans to set up a Film City in Sector 21 along the Expressway, citing violations of the laid down rules, and issued it a notice to revise it. Yeida found that the layout in the present form lacked fire no-objection certificate (NOC), structure safety certificate, and it also violates the land use by planning commercial work on a green area. Bayview Bhutani Film City Private Limited, a consortium led by filmmaker Boney Kapoor and the Bhutani Group -- submitted its layout plan three days ago for the proposed 230-acre Film City, prompting Yeida to raise multiple objections, citing major deviations from the approved land use, said Yeida officials. 'The authority's main concern is the proposed alteration of designated green areas, originally earmarked for parks, playgrounds, and multi-purpose open spaces. Instead, the consortium has planned to construct film studios with accommodations and related infrastructure on this land. This move, officials said, is not in line with the sanctioned land use,' said Yeida chief executive officer (CEO) Arun Vir Singh. Yeida said the layout plan (submitted by developer) includes multiple commercial buildings within the industrial zone—another clear violation. 'Warehouses, hotels, and staff housing have been proposed on industrial-use land, contrary to zoning regulations. The consortium has also failed to submit key documents, including the fire safety NOC and structural stability certificate. Only the layout for the film institute and film studios will be considered for approval at this stage under phase I. The authority has made it clear that no permissions will be granted for commercial developments—such as malls or resorts—until the developer completes at least 15% of the film institute and studios constructions,' the CEO added. As per the approved land use, 155 acres are reserved for industrial purposes and 75 acres for commercial use. Of the industrial portion, 21 acres are earmarked for the film institute and 134 acres for film-related facilities, said Yeida officials. 'The plan fragments the designated green belt instead of maintaining a consolidated area. The green cover constitutes 15% of the total site, but the builder's plan falls short of expectations,' the CEO said. The authority has directed the consortium to revise the proposal and submit a phase-wise development plan at the earliest. Only Phase 1, covering the industrial zone, will be approved for now. However, Phases 2 and 3 must be clearly indicated in the revised plan, officials said. 'The commercial activities will be permitted only after 15% of the project facilities are developed. The first phase, focused on building the film studios, is expected to take three years, with a total project completion timeline of eight years,' said Singh. Bhutani Infrastructure chief executive officer Ashish Bhutani was unavailable for comment despite repeated attempts.

Layout plan of Int'l Film City submitted to YEIDA

The International Film City project moved ahead on Tuesday after film producer Boney Kapoor's company, Bayview Projects LLP, submitted the detailed layout plan of the Film City to the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA). Now, the YEIDA will review the plan and after giving the necessary approvals, formal construction work will begin. The International Film City is proposed on over 1,000 acres in Sector-21 along the Yamuna Expressway. The first phase will kick off on 230 acres of land, with an estimated cost of ₹1,510 crore. Shailendra Bhatia, OSD of the YEIDA stated that film producer Boney Kapoor, who is executing the project, has submitted the layout plan of the project on behalf of his company. Now, the authority will review and examine the entire layout plan, after which it will give the necessary approval to start work. CEO of the YEIDA, Arun Veer Singh made it clear that construction work will be according to the agreement, and no changes will be accepted without approval. Separate NOCs will be required for approvals like parking, landscaping, and gardening, he added. Singh informed that the Bayview Projects LLP, selected as the highest bidder by offering 18% of gross revenue share, was issued the Letter of Award last year. On June 27, 2024, the YEIDA and the concessionaire representative Boney Kapoor signed the concession agreement. As per this, the site's right of way was transferred to the concessionaire on February 27, 2025. The master plan of the Film City was approved on January 30, 2025. The project will be completed in three phases over the next eight years. In the first phase, construction will take place on 230 acres, and in the future, expansion will take place on the remaining 770 acres in phases two and three. In the first 155 acres, main structures like film studios, sound stages, post-production units, and a film institute will be built. Additionally, on 75 acres, a commercial centre with retail, offices, and entertainment complexes will be developed, but this will start only after the film-related buildings are completed. Rajiv Arora, general manager of the Bayview Projects LLP, said construction will begin immediately after all approvals. Notably, the project's foundation stone will be laid by chief minister Yogi Adityanath. The proposed International Film City in Sector 21 is a historic step to make Uttar Pradesh a national and international film production hub. It will not only create jobs and attract investment but also promote the state's cultural heritage. For film lovers and youth, this project will be more than just a job opportunity; it will be a platform to fulfil their dreams. This project will create about 500,000 direct and indirect jobs and will take Uttar Pradesh's economy to new heights. The Film City will have: Convention centre with 10,000 seats A museum based on Indian cinema. A special film festival area, which will have a guest house and an auditorium. Separate accommodation facilities for artists. Small studio units with different Indian architectural styles, which can be rented for shooting or staying. Large sound stages and an underwater shooting studio.
