Dedicated student lanes placed in MRT-3, LRT-2

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) on Friday announced the placement of dedicated student lanes at the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3) and Light Rail Transit Line 2 (LRT-2). DOTR said that the student lanes, placed in each station of the train system, will allow the seamless movement of students availing 50% fare discounts. Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon said the government must ensure efficient movement of passengers at transport hubs by establishing effective platform management, especially for students who want to avail fare discounts. (President Bongbong Marcos has instructed us to make the lives of commuters easier. We should also make it easier to verify student discounts so that there are no queues and the flow of student passengers is fast so that they are not late for their school.) The DOTr's announcement also came after Senator Raffy Tulfo called for the establishment of dedicated booths or lanes for students who will avail of their 50% fare discount at LRT and MRT stations. The DOTr increased the fare discount for all students, including those taking up postgraduate studies, from 20% to 50% for LRT-1, LRT-2, and MRT-3 last month. To get the discounted rates, students are required to present their valid ID within the current school year. Their tickets must be purchased at the ticket counter to avail of the discounted rates. These are valid for single-journey tickets only and not applicable for beep cards and stored-value tickets. —VAL, GMA Integrated News

Marcos says he wants soil laboratories in every region

President Bongbong Marcos at presentation of the 50th Gawad Saka National Awardees and Ugnayan with Farmers, June 30, 2025 at the Science City of Muñoz in Nueva Ecija. RTVM screenshot President Ferdinand ''Bongbong'' Marcos Jr. on Monday said his administration is targeting to establish soil laboratories in every region across the country. Marcos made the remark as he engaged with the national grand winners of the 50th Gawad Saka: Parangal sa mga Natatanging Magsasaka at Mangingisda in a forum at the Science City of Muñoz in Nueva Ecija. The President said he is optimistic that there will come a time where the Philippines will no longer depend on rice importation. (We have already started. We want to place permanent soil laboratories in every region. This is just the Phase I so we will continue to provide help to our fisherfolk and farmers.) (There will come a time that we will no longer depend on importation. That's our goal, that will be the sign of our success if our dependence on importing rice will decrease.) In December of last year, Marcos launched the country's first mobile soil laboratory (MSL) in Malacañang. The MSL is a customized 10-wheeler truck possessing state of the art equipment, facility, resources, and safety features, with the capacity to conduct 44 soil chemical, physical, and microbiological parameters. This will increase the accessibility of soil laboratory services for agricultural stakeholders to guarantee the sustainable use and management of soil resources and strengthen crop productivity. The project is under the National Soil Health Program of the Bureau of Soils and Water Management (BSWM). Meanwhile, Gawad Saka is the highest and most prestigious annual recognition of the Department of Agriculture in partnership with local government units. The award honors the exemplary performance, outstanding contributions and innovative ways of Filipino farmers, fisherfolk, institutions, scientists and researchers in coping with the evolving agricultural sector towards attaining food security, sufficiency and sustainability. — RSJ, GMA Integrated News

Economist says fuel subsidy not the answer to oil price hikes

An economist said that fuel subsidies are not the solution to oil price hikes, amid a massive price increase expected this week. President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. earlier said that the government will be providing fuel subsidies in response to fuel price increases seen as a result of the instability in the Middle East. The Department of Transportation said it is already preparing the guidelines for the subsidies. In Mav Gonzales's report on 24 Oras Weekend, economist and former Department of Social Welfare and Development undersecretary Emmanuel Leyco urged the government to develop contingency plans, especially if the conflict in the region persists. (The country's funds will be depleted if we keep on handing out ayuda. This won't be the final increase in fuel prices…The government needs to have a contingency plan on how we will be able to provide help without causing an increase in taxes or to provide subsidies for the right sectors.) Transport group PISTON, meanwhile, said it is looking into requesting a further fare increase. The group also expressed the belief that the prices of oil are just being manipulated by businessmen. (Even before the war started, fuel prices have been increasing here in our country… It's a big blow, a big burden. And with every increase and movement on fuel prices comes the increase in prices of basic necessities.) (We need to call the attention of the administration, President Bongbong Marcos, to act and implement an order to suspend the implementation of higher taxes on petroleum products.) The group will also conduct a protest at Philcoa, Quezon City on Monday and Tuesday, but clarified that it will not be not a transport strike. Earlier, the Department of Energy said that it met with oil companies to ask the increase in oil prices to be gradual. The Department of Transportation also said it is prepared to distribute fuel subsidies to Public Utility Vehicle (PUV) drivers. Industry sources claimed that the price will increase at around P4.90 to P5.20 per liter of diesel and P3.20 to P3.50 per liter of gasoline. — Jiselle Anne C. Casucian/BM, GMA Integrated News
