Son finally listens to mom's advice to buy lottery ticket — and wins big prize
A Maryland man has his mom to thank — at least in part — for his $50,000 lottery win. He only buys lottery tickets occasionally, while she's a more dedicated player, Maryland Lottery officials said in an Aug. 1 news release. 'She always says, 'you should try it,'' the man told lottery officials. So he took her advice while getting gas July 23 and picked up a Bonus Match 5 ticket for $6, lottery officials said. The next day, he checked the lottery website, and 'I honestly was a bit confused when I saw my numbers were matching,' he said, per the release. 'I've only played a handful of times, so I wasn't sure if it was $50,000 or what.' He got in touch with his mom, and she 'verified the ticket was worth the $50,000 he suspected,' lottery officials said. The man, from Columbia, said he'll use the winnings on a house down payment and medical bills, per lottery officials. Plus, he plans to celebrate with his mom. Columbia is about a 20-mile drive southwest from Baltimore.

Lottery player wakes up from nap to big win in Maryland. ‘Must still be sleepy'
A Virginia woman woke up from a nap to some momentous news — she'd just hit a top prize win from a $2 lottery game she bought earlier that day in Maryland, officials said. The lucky winner was running errands when she decided to buy a Bonus Match 5 ticket, leading her to a big win worth $50,000, the Maryland Lottery said in a July 25 news release. After finishing her errands, she went home and took a nap — only to wake up and discover the exciting win, according to lottery officials. 'I saw the numbers matching and thought, 'I must still be sleepy,'' she told the lottery. She then called her daughter to verify the win, and sure enough it wasn't a dream, lottery officials said. The lottery player bought her ticket at a convenience store in Princess Anne, a 135-mile drive southeast from Washington, D.C., according to the lottery. The odds of winning the game's top prize per $2 ticket are 1 in 191,919, according to the game's web page. The lottery player said she plans to use the winnings to buy her daughter a car, treat herself and save the rest, according to lottery officials.

7 winning lottery tickets sold on the same day — from the same Maryland shop
A Maryland woman held one of seven winning lottery tickets sold in the same day from the same shop, but she didn't realize it was a big winner until days after she bought it, lottery officials said. The Baltimore County woman and six other lucky players won top prizes worth $50,000 in the July 12 Bonus Match 5 drawing, the Maryland Lottery said in a July 16 news release. But the woman told lottery officials she was shocked to learn of her win days later. 'When I saw my numbers matched, I thought, 'Are you kidding me?'' she told the lottery. 'I was so surprised!' The winning tickets were purchased at an auto repair shop in Baltimore, the lottery said. She said she plans to share some of her winnings with her daughter and use some during a cruise vacation she already had planned, according to lottery officials. The other six winning tickets have yet to be claimed, lottery officials said. The winning numbers in the July 12 drawing were 8, 16, 22, 32 and 39, according to the game's web page. The Bonus ball was 18. Bonus Match 5 drawings are held nightly and the odds of winning the top prize per $1 ticket are 1 in 575,757, according to the lottery.

5 lottery near-misses where big prizes were almost lost forever
June 27 (UPI) -- Lottery players buy their tickets dreaming of the big one, but sometimes even tickets that earn big prizes can end up lost, forgotten or even thrown in the trash. Here are five times winning lottery tickets with major prizes nearly failed to find their way to a claims center. In a file container A Calvert County, Md., man bought a six-board ticket for the July 12, 2024, Bonus Match 5 drawing, but when he thought to check whether it was a winner, he discovered the ticket was nowhere to be found. He ended up locating the ticket in a file container months later, and discovered one of his lines had scored a $500,000 prize, and another had netted him an additional $400. He was able to claim his prize with just days to spare before it would have expired. In the car Another ticket that went missing for several months was an August 2024 Powerball ticket purchased by a Jonesboro, Ark., woman named Tracy H. The player told lottery officials the ticket went missing before she could even check if it was a winner. Tracy ended up finding the ticket in her vehicle in February, and was able to claim a $100,000 prize shortly before the 180-day expiration period. The ticket hoarder A Prince George's County, Md., man claimed a $50,000 Pick 5 prize with less than a week to spare before it expired, but he said the ticket hadn't been forgotten or misplaced, sharing how: "I just wanted to hold on to it. But, I'll tell you I sure was excited about it." The win even came as a surprise to the player's wife, who wasn't told of her husband's luck until the day before he claimed his prize in February. Under the furniture A Nottingham, Md., man told Maryland Lottery officials he was helping his mother move furniture at her house when he discovered a stack of scratch-off tickets that she had intended to give as stocking stuffers months earlier. The man's mother told him to go ahead and take the tickets home, with the understanding that they would split any winners. The duo ended up sharing a $50,000 prize from a $5 Holiday Luck Doubler ticket -- as well as smaller prizes of $6 and $15. In the trash Shepherdsville resident Pamela Howard-Thorton told Kentucky Lottery officials she bought four $5 Flamingo Bingo scratch-off tickets, but found after tossing out three non-winners that her fourth ticket was missing. "I looked in the trash and I was like, 'Oh, my gosh, I threw it away,'" she said, adding that the ticket rescued from the garbage can turned out to be an $80,000 winner.
