Boomer Esiason thinks Derek Jeter is lying about daughter's birthday as Old-Timers' Day feud escalates

Boomer Esiason caused a stir when he said Derek Jeter seemed 'elitist' for skipping this year's Yankees Old-Timers' Day, and the WFAN host is doubling down. Jeter says he's missing the event, a celebration of the Yankees' 2000 World Series team, for his daughter's birthday party, but Esiason isn't convinced that's the real reason. 'I believe there's an inaccurate part of this story out there,' the ex-Jets quarterback said on 'Boomer and Gio' on Tuesday morning. 'There is something going on, I believe. But I don't believe it's what everybody thinks it is. But maybe I could be wrong.' Advertisement That statement came after WFAN co-host and former Giants running back Tiki Barber relayed that Jeter was 'hot' about Esiason's skepticism. Esiason said earlier on the show that he received an email from someone in Jeter's sphere indicating the true reason for Jeter's absence is a separate family matter, although the former NFL quarterback did not divulge details. Last Tuesday, Esiason said on his radio show that it was 'a little bit insulting' for Jeter to skip out. 'I think he should be there, he should be part of it. It seems elitist to me,' Esiason said, adding: 'Mickey Mantle and Joe DiMaggio played in an Old-Timers' game together…if those guys put a uniform back on, then [Jeter] certainly can.' Getty Images Barber approached Jeter about the comments, with the pair both in Cooperstown to celebrate CC Sabathia's induction into the Hall of Fame, and Jeter voiced his frustration, according to Barber. '[Jeter said] 'He should have called me,'' Barber recalled Monday on his show with Evan Roberts. 'Don't speculate about me. Just talk to me.' He was hot. I had to calm him down.' Esiason retorted that he didn't have Jeter's contact, saying the legendary shortstop could have called him about the comments, before he reiterated his skepticism about Jeter's excuse.

Derek Jeter ‘was hot' over Boomer Esiason's Old Timers' Day dig: Tiki Barber

Not much got under Derek Jeter's skin during his playing days, but Boomer Esiason managed to irk him with his 'elitist' comment and speculation about why Jeter is skipping this year's Old Timer's Day. WFAN host and former Giants star running back Tiki Barber relayed the message after spending time with Jeter over the weekend to celebrate CC Sabathia's induction into the Hall of Fame. '(Jeter said) 'He should have called me,' Barber said Monday during his show with co-host Evan Roberts. ''Don't speculate about me. Just talk to me.' He was hot. I had to calm him down.' This controversy stems from Jeter not being part of the Yankees' upcoming Old Timer's Day on Aug. 9 that will celebrate the franchise's 2000 World Series championship team. This year's edition will feature an actual baseball game for the first time since 2019. The next day, Esiason and co-host Gregg Giannotti took Jeter to task for skipping out. 'It's a little bit insulting … I think he should be there, he should be a part of it,' Esiason said on 'Boomer and Gio' on last Tuesday. 'It seems elitist to me.' 4 Derek Jeter at the 2025 Hall of Fame ceremony. Charles Wenzelberg / New York Post Giannotti then mentioned how Jeter said at last year's event — the second he attended since retiring after the 2014 season — that the fans won't see him hit again since he's 'afraid I would hurt myself.' 'Mickey Mantle and Joe DiMaggio played in an Old-Timers' game together,' Esiason said last week. 'If those guys put a uniform back on then (Jeter) certainly can.' He later added: 'I just think, to me, he's the captain, he was the guy that was embraced by the fans and loved by the fans and still is to this very day. It just feels a little bit elitist, that's all.' Well, those comments made their way to Jeter and he's apparently not happy. 4 Boomer Esiason called Derek Jeter 'elitist' for skipping Old Timer's Day. WireImage WFAN analyst Suzyn Waldman said last week that Jeter would miss the game for his daughter's birthday and the ex-shortstop confirmed that's the case to Barber. 'I went up to Jeter and I said to him, 'Geez, I got a question for ya.' Because my partner says you don't want to hit, you don't want to look like you couldn't hit,'' Barber said to co-host and die-hard Mets fan Roberts. 'I said, 'What happened?' And he says, 'I have a birthday party for my kids.'' 4 Tiki Barber relayed Derek Jeter's thoughts on Boomer Esiason's report. @WFAN660/X When Roberts asked Barber if he denied the report that he didn't want to hit, Barber — with a laugh– called out his co-host and Esiason for striking out. 'No, he doesn't care. He would,' Barber said of allegation. 'You were dead wrong. More importantly, Boomer was dead wrong. He was so mad at Boomer I had to go buy him shots. So mad that I had to like dump water on his head to cool down and chill out.' 4 Robert Sabo for NY Post Barber later noted how the whole thing could have been avoided with a phone call, although he wasn't sure if Esiason had Jeter's digits. 'Boomer, just call him, just ask,' Barber said. 'He's not an elitist.'

Why Derek Jeter is skipping Yankees' Old-Timers' Day honoring 2000 World Series team

The reason for Derek Jeter skipping this year's Yankees Old-Timers' Day has been revealed. WFAN Yankees voice Suzyn Waldman said Wednesday that Jeter, 51, won't be at the Aug. 9 festivities — which will honor the 2000 World Series team — because of his daughter's birthday. Advertisement 'They're having a big party for her,' Waldman told Brandon Tierney. Jeter's oldest daughter, Bella Raine, was born on Aug. 17, 2017. He and wife Hannah have three daughters and a son. 'You couldn't have the birthday party on a different day?' Tierney asked Waldman. 'At this point, he's 25 years removed from it and it's his daughter's birthday and maybe he doesn't want to go home and have her daughter crying. I don't know,' Waldman replied. 'I don't think it has anything to do with that he didn't want to play a game. I don't think that at all.' Derek Jeter is ‘elitist' for skipping Yankees Old-Timers' Day: Boomer Esiason

The Yankees will be commemorating the 2000 World Series team at Old-Timers' Day in August, but a rather crucial member of that team won't be in attendance. Derek Jeter isn't showing up, which has gotten WFAN hosts Boomer Esiason and Gregg Giannotti a bit riled up. 'It's a little bit insulting … I think he should be there, he should be a part of it,' Esiason said on 'Boomer and Gio' on Tuesday. 'It seems elitist to me.' 5 Boomer Esiason finds Derek Jeter to be acting 'elitist' for not attending the Yankees' Old-Timers' Day. Getty Images There are more than 30 former Yankees participating, but 'The Captain' isn't one of them. 'Derek Jeter said that he doesn't want the fans to see him hit again at this age,' Esiason's co-host Giannotti said of Jeter's reasoning. 5 Derek Jeter (right) was at Old-Timers' Day in 2024 alongside Mariano Rivera — Rivera will be in attendance in 2025. 'Mickey Mantle and Joe DiMaggio played in an Old-Timers' game together,' Esiason said. 'If those guys put a uniform back on then [Jeter] certainly can.' 5 Derek Jeter recently appeared at Fanatics Fanfest. Erik Pendzich/Shutterstock Jeter, 51, last played in 2014. The Hall of Famer was a 14-time All-Star, five-time World Series champ, five-time Silver Slugger and five-time Gold Glove winner. Of course, he's not in the same condition as he was during his playing career, but Giannotti thinks that other players have to worry about that more than Jeter does. 5 Derek Jeter at Yankee Stadium in 2014. Charles Wenzelberg/New York Post 'Derek Jeter's not gonna embarrass himself. I think he would put the uniform back on and look just like Derek Jeter when we last saw him,' Giannotti said, challenging Jeter's possible reasoning for not playing. 'He's in great shape, some of these other guys showing up are not — he is.' And it's not only that Jeter isn't playing in the game, it's the fact that he's not attending whatsoever. 'Just show up, you don't have to put the uniform on if you don't want to,' Giannotti continued. While Giannotti attempted to reason with Jeter's wishes, Esiason had one theme that kept returning to his mind with Jeter's attitude for the game. 5 Boomer Esiason (left) and Gregg Giannotti spoke on 'Boomer and Gio' and expressed some disapproval of Jeter skipping Old-Timers' Day. Patrick McMullan via Getty Image 'I just think, to me, he's the captain, he was the guy that was embraced by the fans and loved by the fans and still is to this very day,' he said. 'It just feels a little bit elitist, that's all.' The WFAN hosts did note that if Jeter has something going on in his life that makes him unable to attend, that, of course, makes sense — but Esiason especially is not buying the rest of the act.

Yankees announcer Dave Sims fires back at Boomer Esiason over games he ‘blew off'

Yankees radio announcer Dave Sims has no regrets about taking time off in May to see his son, despite his WFAN colleague's dismay. Sims, in his first year in the Yankees booth after taking over for the retired John Sterling, addressed Boomer Esiason criticizing him for taking the Yankees-A's series off just more than a month into his first season calling Bombers games. 'People in our business — in this line of business — take time off,' Sims, who was the Mariners' TV play-by-play voice for the previous 18 years, said on the Awful Announcing podcast. 'I have a son in Seattle. And the three games I blew off were in Sacramento. If you look at the schedules of just about every broadcaster in the major leagues, they take time off. It's not like I took time off Labor Day in the middle of a pennant race. It was May — almost middle May — and I wanted to see my son. And it was the only time we were going to be going out west, and we had some things we had to take to him, yada, yada, yada. I wasn't going to make my wife do that. Yankees radio announcer Dave Sims (r.) talks to manager Aaron Boone (l.) Getty Images 'The radio station said, 'Fine, you have X amount of days off. If those are the days you want to take off, hey, you're good. We got you covered for it. Safe travels.'' Esiason was in disbelief that Sims, 72, would take a series off at the time. 'I've worked with Dave, great guy,' Esiason said on the 'Boomer and Gio' show on May 12. 'We love Dave Sims, but I'm gonna call it out as I see it. You just got started as the Yankee announcer, and he's 40 games into his career as the Yankee announcer, and he decided to take off.' There is 'plenty of time in the offseason' to be with family and friends, Esiason went on. Boomer Esiason Getty Images 'What are you doing? You just took the Yankee job! It's supposed to be the job of your life,' Esiason said. 'If he had been here as long as John Sterling had been here — if John wanted to take a weekend off later on in his career, totally acceptable.' Esiason and his radio partner, Gregg Giannotti, were out last week on vacation.
