The food editor's supermarket picks from the Great Taste Awards

I t's a tough job but someone has to do it. This year there were nearly 15,000 entries for the Great Taste Awards, the Oscars of the food and drink product industry, and a panel had to spend several days working their way through hundreds of beers and breads, cakes and condiments, pastas and puddings, and everything in between. My task has been rather easier. Although more than 5,000 entrants won a star or two, only 273 of them walked away with the full three. Here is my pick, from supermarket bargains to the specialist suppliers who really produce the best of the very best. 100g, from £2, Booths, Morrisons, M&S, Waitrose A soft, buttery triple cream cheese from Germany which, with its aromatic brie-like flavour and slight spice, makes a gentle introduction for anyone who claims not to like blue cheeses.

Burgers a 'possible health risk' as customers told to get refunds

The supermarket has issued a recall notice Shoppers at a high-end supermarket have been cautioned with a "please do not eat" warning for a favoured item, following a packaging error. The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has broadcasted a product recall notice, alerting that individuals with coeliac disease, and/or a gluten or wheat allergy or intolerance, might fall ill if they ingest the product. ‌ The FSA announced: "Booths is recalling Aberdeen Angus Beef Meatballs because they contain wheat (gluten) which is not mentioned on the label, due to a packing error causing the product to contain burgers instead of meatballs. The packaging states that the product is gluten free which is incorrect. ‌ "This means the product is a possible health risk for anyone with coeliac disease, and/or an allergy or intolerance to wheat or gluten." Guiding consumers on the appropriate actions to take, the FSA continued: "If you have bought the above product and have an allergy or intolerance to wheat or gluten, do not eat it. ‌ "Instead return it to the store from where it was bought for a full refund." Booths, which has stores across the North of England, explained that the packets of "meatballs" actually contain burgers. The affected items are 288g, bearing a use by date of August 13, 2025. No other batches of Booths' Aberdeen Angus Beef Meatballs are implicated in this recall. Customers seeking additional information can reach out to Booths at 0800 221 8086, Monday to Friday, between 8.30am and 4.30pm.

Booths has 27 stores across the north, with most in Lancashire and Cumbria, with only three in Yorkshire. The store will be replaced by a Tesco store, although no official date has been set for its opening. It is reported that the takeover will be completed later this year, with all 95 staff transferring over to Tesco. Family-owned supermarket Booths received praise from shoppers in 2023 after ditching self-checkouts from all of its stores as bigger chains have embraced them. It said it hoped the more would cut costs and speed up waiting times. Managing director Nigel Murray told The Grocer that customer satisfaction was up, as a result. 'Not all of that is due to the fact that we've taken self-service checkouts out of many stores. But when you look at things like service, into the 'promise of things to come' section, we've scored brilliantly.'
