Jasprit Bumrah's injuries are holding him back in past couple of years: Ricky Ponting
Legendary Australia cricketer Ricky Ponting feels it was the right decision by the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) to not make Jasprit Bumrah the captain of the Indian Test team due to his struggle with injuries. Bumrah has been suffering from injuries since 2022, as he was ruled out of action for 11 months and returned in August then, the speedster has been in remarkable form as he played crucial roles in India's T20 World Cup 2024 triumph and several Test victories. However, he was once again injured during the last Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 against Australia in Ponting shared his views on Bumrah's injuries and said that the board did the right thing by not appointing him the captain due to his injury issues. "I actually think it's the right move. I know there's a lot of other people out there, pundits out there saying they can't understand why it wasn't Bumrah and why they have gone to Shubman, but I think it's pretty simple," Ponting said on ICC Ponting mentioned how Bumrah's injuries would've affected his captaincy and said that the team must back Shubman Gill to remain as captain for a long injuries are holding him back a bit in the last couple of years and you don't want that with a captain. You can't have a captain coming in and missing games here and there. So I think it's the right decision. Now that they've made it, it's one they've got to stick with and give him a good crack at it for a long period of time,' he recently India head coach Gautam Gambhir revealed that they will be making Bumrah play just three Test matches in the upcoming England series to manage his workload. However, the management is undecided on which three matches the speedster will star fast bowler was adjudged ICC Test Cricketer and Cricketer of the year for his remarkable performances in 2024. He scalped 71 wickets from 13 matches at an average of 14.92 with five 5-wicket hauls to his name. Bumrah will be eager to continue his brilliant form in the upcoming Test series against England.

Gautam Gambhir unsure about how to manage Jasprit Bumrah's workload management on ENG tour: 'We haven't taken the call…'
Gautam Gambhir remains uncertain about how to manage Jasprit Bumrah's workload during the upcoming England tour, acknowledging that the premier pacer won't feature in all five Tests. While hinting that Bumrah is likely to play three matches, Gambhir admitted that the specific Tests he'll participate in are yet to be decided. During the squad announcement for the England tour, India's chief selector Ajit Agarkar revealed that, based on feedback from the medical team, 31-year-old Jasprit Bumrah will not be available for all five Tests. Head coach Gambhir asserted that they will decide Bumrah's participation in matches depending on how the series plays out. "We haven't taken that call, which three games is he going to play," Gambhir said during India's pre-departure press conference in Mumbai. "We are going to have a discussion with him and depending on the series as well. A lot will depend on the results of the series, where the series is heading. That is something which I am sure he is very well aware of as well and that is important," he added. Bumrah hurt his back after the playing all five Tests in Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 and was later missed out on Champions Trophy after failing to recover in time. The selectors and team management don't want a similar situation to arise in future. Gautam Gambhir isn't overly concerned about Bumrah missing a couple of the Tests, expressing confidence in the rest of his bowling unit to step up in his absence—just as they successfully did during the Champions Trophy. "I have said it before during the Champions Trophy [which Bumrah missed and India won] as well, it will give someone the opportunity to put his hand up and we have got enough talent there. I know that he is quality but we have got enough quality apart from him as well in the squad," Gambhir said. Gill echoed similar sentiments, emphasising that India's pace attack has enough depth and quality to not only cover for Bumrah's absence but also to win Test matches from any position. "I think we have picked enough bowlers and we have enough pace battery and a lot of fast bowlers are in a great space to be able to win us Test matches from any situation or any position," Gill said. 'Obviously when you have someone like Jasprit Bumrah, depending on how many matches he would play, whenever he would come back and play the match for us, it would be a great sight for us. But I think we have a great mix of bowlers and a great set of bowlers who can get the job for the team done,' he added.

Mumbai Indians receive Rohit Sharma SOS ahead of IPL 2025 Playoffs: 'He looks disinterested; needs to have some aim'
Rohit Sharma is regarded as one of the most complete batters, especially in the limited-overs format. He recently announced his retirement from Test cricket after enduring a poor outing as a batter and captain in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, which India lost 1-3 to Australia. In June last year, Rohit retired from T20 internationals after leading Team India to a second T20 World Cup win. In ODIs, however, Rohit continues to thrive, taking India to their third ICC Champions Trophy win, beating New Zealand in the final in March. In the ongoing IPL 2025 season, though, Rohit has struggled, mostly playing as an impact player for the Mumbai Indians. Despite playing a few exciting knocks, Rohit has appeared far from his best, and this has been the case across the last two editions of the IPL. With MI having qualified for the IPL Playoffs, Rohit's form becomes all the more important if the five-time champions hope to land a sixth title, but former India pacer Atul Wassan feels the ex-MI captain has lost his hunger. "He seems to be a bit disinterested; the motivation, the fire in the belly, has satiated. He has won almost everything, from winning the T20 World Cup and Champions Trophy to retiring from Test cricket. Hence, to motivate yourself to play at this level of cricket every day is a very tough task," Wassan said during the tenth episode of Bails and Banter on the OTTplay app. Rohit has been off-colour in the IPL for quite some time now. Last year, Rohit hit a tally of 417 runs, 100 of which came during a knock against the Kolkata Knight Riders. This year, Rohit has struck three half-centuries, but with 329 runs from 13 matches, one ought to believe that the MI veteran hasn't been at his free-flowing self. At 38, Rohit has more cricket behind than ahead of him, but Wassan insists the batter must not leave the stage having undone all the hard work of the last decade and a half. Also Read: Rohit Sharma takes a lap around Wankhede, has a telling exchange with Nita Ambani; then sets off crowd with Kuldeep, KP "A player needs to have some sort of aim in the future; it could be the longevity and the legacy. No player wants to compromise on the reputation he/she has built and leave fans with bad memories, and this is something which should motivate them," he added. In December 2023, MI opted to replace Rohit as captain with Hardik Pandya, a decision that caused the franchise plenty of backlash. But given all that Hardik did for India –playing a key role in winning the T20 World Cup and the Champions Trophy – the crowd has accepted him with open arms. Then again, Rohit's importance as a batter hasn't diminished, and Wassan is confident of The Hitman getting a big one in the next match or two. As Mumbai secured their spot in the IPL playoffs, Rohit must be keen to deliver his finest performance, steering the team toward a sixth title triumph. The playoffs kick off on May 29 with Qualifier 1 at the Maharaja Yadavinder Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur, Chandigarh, setting the stage for an intense battle for glory. MI, however, will play the Eliminator on May 30.
