Thailand Imposes Martial Law in 8 Regions after Military Escalations with Cambodia
Rana Atef Thailand imposed martial law in eight areas along its border with Cambodia on Friday, in order to protect its sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as to safeguard the lives and property of its citizens, following escalating military tensions between the two countries. The Border Defense Command in Chanthaburi and Trat provinces in eastern Thailand said in a statement reported by The Nation newspaper that it had become necessary to deploy military forces to protect the country from external threats, as Cambodia had used force and weapons to invade Thai territory along the border. The statement clarified that martial law was imposed in eight districts within Chanthaburi and Trat provinces: Mueang Chanthaburi, Tha Mai, Laem Sing, Makham, Khlung, Na Yai Am, Khao Khitchakut, and Khao Saming. Relations between Thailand and Cambodia have reached their lowest point in over a decade, with both sides exchanging gunfire and launching air raids since Thursday. The violence has forced tens of thousands of civilians on both sides of the border to flee the conflict zone. Diplomatic ties between the two countries have severely deteriorated. Cambodia has recalled its diplomatic staff and expelled the Thai ambassador from its capital, Phnom Penh, while Thailand has closed all land crossings with Cambodia. The crisis was sparked by a landmine explosion last Wednesday that injured five Thai soldiers, one of whom lost a leg. Bangkok has accused Cambodian forces of recently planting landmines in areas previously considered safe—a claim Cambodia has denied, stating that the mines are "remnants of past wars." read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results News "Tensions Escalate: Iran Probes Allegations of Indian Tech Collaboration with Israeli Intelligence" News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks

Thailand declares martial law in 8 districts amid deadly clashes with Cambodia over Hindu temples territory
Thailand on Friday declared 'martial law' in eight of its districts bordering Cambodia, after the two nations engaged in deadly clashes over a long-time territorial dispute. According to news agency AFP, Apichart Sapprasert, commander of the military's Border Defense Command in the provinces of Chanthaburi and Trat, said in a statement "martial law is now in effect" in seven districts of Chanthaburi and one district of Trat. According to Thai media, the affected districts are: Chanthaburi province: Mueang Chanthaburi, Tha Mai, Makham, Laem Sing, Kaeng Hang Maew, Na Yai Am and Khao Khitchakut Trat province: Khao Saming An Al Jazeera report said that these national parks will remain closed: Phu Chong-Na Yoi National Park (Ubon Ratchathani province), Yod Dom Wildlife Sanctuary (Ubon Ratchathani province), Khao Phra Wihan National Park (Sisaket province), Phanom Dong Rak Wildlife Sanctuary (Sisaket province), Huai Sala Wildlife Sanctuary (Sisaket province), and Huai Thap Than–Huai Samran Wildlife Sanctuary (Surin province). The two nations are locked in a bitter dispute over the Emerald Triangle, a border region where both of them meet Laos. The area is home to several ancient temples, including the Prasat Ta Muen Thom temple, near which clashes broke out early Thursday. Prasat Preah Vihear and Prasat Ta Muen Thom, both Khmer-era Hindu temples about 95 miles apart, are two of the key sites where tensions flared on Thursday. Prasat Ta Muen Thom is reportedly on the Thai side of the border, and Prasat Preah Vihear is on the Cambodian side of the border. Both countries claim ownership of these disputed sites. At least 130,000 people fled the fighting as Thailand's acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai warned on Friday that cross-border clashes with Cambodia 'could develop into war". A long-running border dispute erupted into intense fighting with jets, artillery, tanks, and ground troops on Thursday, and the UN Security Council is set to hold an emergency meeting later today. According to an AFP report, a steady thump of artillery strikes could be heard from the Cambodian side of the border on Friday, where the province of Oddar Meanchey reported one civilian – a 70-year-old man – had been killed and five more wounded. More than 138,000 people have been evacuated from Thailand's border regions, its health ministry said, reporting 15 fatalities – 14 civilians and a soldier – with a further 46 wounded, including 15 troops, the report added. "We have tried to compromise as we are neighbours, but we have now instructed the Thai military to act immediately in case of urgency," said Phumtham. "If the situation escalates, it could develop into war – though for now, it remains limited to clashes," he told reporters in Bangkok.

Thailand declares martial law in 8 districts along Cambodia border
As the two nations continued to exchange heavy artillery fire on Friday, Thailand declared martial law in eight districts bordering Cambodia. Thailand's acting prime minister Phumtham Wechayachai said that Bangkok was committed to defending its territory and sovereignty.(Reuters) Commander of the military's Border Defense Command in the provinces of Chanthaburi and Trat, Apichart Sapprasert, said in a statement, "martial law is now in effect" in seven districts of Chanthaburi and one district of Trat. The military border commander said that the decision was taken due to "Cambodia's use of force" to enter Thai territory. The development comes just hours after Thai officials said that the country favours bilateral negotiations rather than third-party mediation to resolve the border dispute with Cambodia. However, Thailand warned Cambodia that its conflict could "potentially develop into a war", with acting prime minister Phumtham Wechayachai saying that Bangkok was committed to defending its territory and sovereignty. "We have tried to compromise as we are neighbours, but we have now instructed the Thai military to act immediately in case of urgency," said Phumtham. 'This situation could potentially develop into a war,' Phumtham said, adding that, 'At present, it is still considered an armed clash involving heavy weaponry.' Cambodia prime minister Hun Manet said that his country was ready for a ceasefire but accused Thailand of stepping out of a deal brokered by Malaysian PM Anwar Ibrahim. The truce was set to come into effect early on Friday. According to Thailand's health ministry, at least 15 people have lost their lives in one of the worst Thai-Cambodian clashes in more than a decade, with over three dozen people injured. Meanwhile, more than 1,30,000 civilians have been evacuated from conflict zones in Thailand. Cambodia has also 260 schools in the province of Oddar Meanchey, which is the center of the conflict, local media reported. The United Nations Security Council is also set to hold an emergency meeting on the crisis later on Friday. US, China, Malaysia offer to mediate The US, China and Malaysia have offered to mediate to de-escalate the growing tensions between Thailand and Cambodia. Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi, earlier in the day, said Beijing is willing to play a constructive role in easing military conflict. Yi also blamed the border clash on the "legacy of western colonisers". The US embassy in Bangkok said in a statement that they "have consistently encouraged Thailand and Cambodia to resolve their differences peacefully in a manner that respects diplomatic obligations and norms.' However, Thailand has reiterated that it would prefer resolving the matter through bilateral negotiations. 'We do appreciate their kind offers and do not rule them all out,' Russ Jalichandra, vice minister for foreign affairs, told Bloomberg News. He added, "'But at the moment we still want to solve the problems bilaterally through negotiations, and existing bilateral mechanisms that both sides agreed upon."
