Putra Heights Inferno: RM864,000 rental aid disbursed in second phase
SHAH ALAM: The Selangor government has disbursed RM864,000 in the second phase of temporary rental assistance to 144 households affected by last year's gas pipeline fire in Putra Heights, Subang Jaya. State Housing and Culture Committee chairman Datuk Borhan Aman Shah said the payments, covering July to September 2025, were credited on Aug 6 through the Selangor Housing and Property Board (LPHS). He said recipient selection followed a data review conducted by the Petaling District Disaster Management Committee, Victim Data Subcommittee and local community representatives. "The list was updated based on factors such as homes already repaired, former tenants who have relocated or those no longer needing assistance,' he said in a statement. Borhan said the aid aims to ease the burden on affected families as they navigate relocation or home repairs, and urged remaining eligible victims to claim their assistance at the Petaling District and Land Office for further verification. In the first phase of the programme, covering April to June, a total of RM2.19mil was disbursed to 365 households. — Bernama

Refurbishment of damaged 185 Selangor PPR units to conclude by October
SHAH ALAM: The refurbishment of 185 damaged units at three People's Housing Projects (PPR) in Selangor is expected to be completed by the end of October this year. Selangor housing and culture committee chairman Datuk Borhan Aman Shah said to date, 156 units at PPR Kampung Baru Hicom, PPR Kota Damansara and PPR Serendah have been repaired and will be rented out to eligible tenants. "We are left with only 27 units that are currently being refurbished by Perumahan dan Hartanah Selangor Sdn Bhd (PHSSB). "They are expected to be done by the end of next month," he said, adding that of the 27 units, six are at PPR Kampung Baru, seven at PPR Serendah, and 14 at PPR Kota Damansara. A total of RM7.88mil was spent on repair and maintenance works across the three PPRs from 2019 to mid-2023, he said. Borhan said this during the Selangor State Assembly sitting at Bangunan Dewan Negeri Selangor in Shah Alam when replying to Mohamed Azmin Ali (PN-Hulu Kelang), who asked about the refurbishment progress by the Selangor Housing and Property Board (LPHS) at these three PPR areas. He added that the project was stalled due to cost-saving measures through the tender process and the implementation of the movement control order during the Covid-19 pandemic. "Successful bids had offered prices lower or more competitive than the departmental estimates, while the implementation of the MCO had imposed movement restrictions for 320 days in 2021. "This meant several planned projects couldn't go ahead during the MCO period, as allocated funds were considered current year expenditure and needed to be spent within that same year. "However, by December 2023, the total amount spent had reached RM8.24mil," he said.

Borhan (second right) joining in the community cooking session at the Komuniti Strata event at Taman Putra Perdana Food Court in Puchong. State estimates RM100mil required to settle cases over 10 years THE state government has launched the Selangor Strata Fund (DSS) initiative to solve strata title issues in phases. Six apartment buildings have been identified as pilot projects. The buildings are Flat Bunga Raya (Port Klang), Pangsapuri Seroja (Puchong), Apartment Dahlia (Rawang), Rumah Bandar Taman Saga (Ampang) and Pangsapuri Permai and Pangsapuri Seri Damai in Batu Caves. Amirudin says the state approved RM10mil for the DSS fund under this year's budget. Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said the state had approved RM10mil for the fund under its budget this year. He said a total of RM100mil would be required to resolve all strata title issues in apartment schemes in Selangor over the next 10 years. 'Although this involves significant financial implications for the state, the initiative will be continued in the interest of current owners and the future generations, to enable secure inheritance of the properties. 'The strata title grant is an important document that clarifies ownership rights, facilitates the inheritance process and protects the rights of heirs. Amirudin also said the DSS initiative was expected to generate returns for the state within 10 years, as residential units that have obtained strata titles would be paying parcel quit rent. Also present at the event was state housing and culture committee chairman Datuk Borhan Aman Shah. He said strata housing development in Selangor had grown rapidly in the past two decades. 'According to the Department of the Director-General of Lands and Mines, there were 898,368 strata titles registered in Selangor as of 2023. 'Across the state, 648 development schemes, involving 138,817 residential units have been unable to obtain strata titles since 2007,' he said. The programme, which attracted many residents from the surrounding area, kicked off with mass aerobic exercises, followed by activities like traditional games competition, basic health and teeth check up, and community cooking. Young children had a fun time playing at the inflatable playground and getting close to animals at the petting zoo set up just for the programme. There were also many booths set up by government agencies for the people to get to know more about the services.

Malaysia's iconic superhero Keluang Man finally soars to the silver screen
This film tells the story of Borhan, a psychiatric patient in Kluang, who lives a double life as the mysterious vigilante Keluang Man. Photo: Keluang Man/Instagram After decades of nostalgia and years of anticipation, Keluang Man, Malaysia's original animated superhero, has finally made his live-action debut in cinemas nationwide. Released on May 29, the big-screen adaptation breathes new life into a local legend, blending action, humour and heartfelt storytelling in true Malaysian style. Directed by Anwari Ashraf, the man behind Polis Evo and Project: High Council , Keluang Man is not just another superhero flick. It's a tribute to Malaysian pop culture, a reinvention of an iconic character from the 1990s, and the start of the Astro Shaw Cinematic Universe (ASCU). This film tells the story of Borhan, played by Nas Muammar Zar, better known as Nas-T, a psychiatric patient in Kluang who lives a double life as the mysterious vigilante Keluang Man. Haunted by a voice in his head which is voiced by radio icon Halim Othman, Borhan finds himself pulled between delusions, memories and justice, especially when confronted with his estranged brother Shamsir, played by Datuk Remy Ishak. The story unfolds with a quirky cast of characters including Shweta Sekhon as Dr Malini, Borhan's psychiatrist, and Anwaar Beg Moghal as Inspector Sahab, her relentless brother who is hot on Keluang Man's trail. Datuk Rosyam Nor rounds out the cast as Ahmad, Borhan's aged but wise mentor. Speaking at the movie's gala premiere, lead actor Nas-T admitted that stepping into Borhan's complex world was both a challenge and a triumph. 'It's all thanks to director Anwari Ashraf, who wrote and directed it, and I entrusted everything to him. 'He moulded my character, and I followed his direction faithfully,' he said. In a particularly emotional twist, beloved radio host Halim returns not in body, but in voice. Lending his 1990s-era persona to a voice inside Borhan's head, Halim shared how surreal the experience was. 'Anwari told me about a superhero film with a character inspired by me, tied to the golden days of Roda Impian . 'I was touched by the director's imagination in wanting to capture Malaysia's memories from around 1998 to 2000,' Halim said. For Halim in particular, Keluang Man is considered a generational bridge that would bring people together. 'This isn't just a superhero film, it's a creative journey connecting nostalgia with a new generation,' he said. Shot in Kuala Lumpur, Kluang, Klang and Ipoh, Keluang Man took over two years to produce, with a reported budget of RM13 million. It represents the first full-fledged live-action adaptation of a local animated icon, originally created by the late Kamn Ismail. Director Anwari described the film as a love letter to fans and a vision of more local heroes to come. 'I hope audiences will embrace this film and help reignite the spirit of the superhero Keluang Man, so that his legacy can be passed down from one generation to the next,' he said. – Sinar Daily
