PM Narendra Modi inaugurates Kanpur Metro, built by Afcons
PRNewswire Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], May 30: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday inaugurated a 5-kilometre stretch of the underground Kanpur Metro. Of this, one completed station--Kanpur Central Metro Station--and 2.4 kilometre of tunnelling have been executed by infrastructure major M/s Afcons Infrastructure Ltd. Afcons-led consortium is executing the KNPCC-06 package, which was awarded on March 14, 2022. The project includes design and construction of a 3.826 kilometre underground stretch comprising three metro stations: Kanpur Central, Jhakarkatti, and Transport Nagar, two twin tunnels bored using two shield Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs), with others. Tunnelling along this stretch posed significant challenges due to the presence of dilapidated buildings. However, Afcons successfully navigated these complexities and completed the tunnelling work safely and efficiently. Construction of Kanpur Central Station, which began in December 2022, and the tunnelling works between Kanpur Central and Nawabganj, initiated in August 2023, have both been completed. Afcons, which has been associated with Kanpur Metro since its early phases, was previously responsible for the Priority Section under package KNPCC-02. This package included an elevated viaduct and nine elevated stations from IIT Kanpur to Motijheel. Afcons completed this section in record time despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. The section was commissioned and opened to the public in June 2021. Afcons is a leader in metro construction in India, with a presence in over 10 cities. The company has executed and delivered complex projects, including India's first underwater tunnel in Kolkata, the country's first four-layer transportation system, a 5.6 kilometre double-decker viaduct for the Nagpur Metro, and one of the largest underground metro stations in India.

Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet train: Station at BKC, 21-km underground tunnel see steady progress of work
The Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet train project is progressing steadily in Maharashtra, with major developments taking place at two key sites — the Mumbai station at the Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) and the 21-km underground tunnel running up to Shilphata from BKC. As per National High-Speed Rail Corporation Ltd (NHSRCL) officials, groundwork at the Mumbai station is now 75% complete, with 14 lakh cubic metres of soil dug out so far out of a total 18.7 lakh cubic metres. 'The casting for base slab for the station has already commenced with nearly 25,000 cubic metres of concrete already cast,' an official said. The overall concrete needed for this deep underground slab is likely to be approximately 2 lakh cubic metres. Secant piling — a method used to build strong retaining walls for underground constructions — has been completed, amounting to 3,384 piles at the station site. Besides, tunnelling between BKC and Shilphata is also progressing well, with 3.3 km of the tunnel heading completed. The 21-km tunnel will be a vital component of the high-speed rail corridor in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). Of the 21 km, 16 km will be constructed through Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) and the last 5 km through the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM). At present, construction is going on from the Shilphata side and from two other tunnel faces at the Additionally Driven Intermediate Tunnel (ADIT) portal. 'The ADIT provides access to the tunnel for vehicles during construction and subsequently for operations and emergency evacuation,' the official added. Two vertical shafts at Vikhroli and Sawali have also reached their required depths of 56 metres and 39 metres, respectively. In Palghar district, work on seven mountain tunnels by NATM is also underway. In Maharashtra, work has moved at important points, while work in Gujarat is going on at an impressive pace. NHSRCL has completed 293 km viaducts, 375 km piers and foundations for 394 km. Girder casting has also been finished for 320 km. It has also finished building 14 river bridges in different districts of Gujarat and Dadra and Nagar Haveli. Moreover, seven steel bridges and five pre-stressed concrete (PSC) bridges have been constructed. Track infrastructure is also moving apace in Gujarat where NHSRCL has commissioned over 3 lakh noise barriers for 150 km and completed more than 143 km of track bed. As far as stations are concerned, structural construction has been done for six of the eight bullet train stations in Gujarat, and construction on all three elevated stations is in progress. The Mumbai- Ahmedabad High-Speed rail corridor will be 508 km long — 156 km in Maharashtra and 352 km in Gujarat and Dadra and Nagar Haveli. The Bullet train project, expected to be completed by the end of 2027, will reduce travel time from Mumbai to Ahmedabad to approximately two hours. NHSRCL is the executing agency for the project, which is being constructed with financial and technical assistance from Japan.

Hamdan bin Mohammed Attends MoU Signing for Dubai Loop Project
Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense of the UAE, and Chairman of The Executive Council of Dubai, witnessed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and US-based firm The Boring Company to study the implementation of the 'Dubai Loop' tunnel project. The proposed 17-kilometer tunnel, featuring 11 stations, is designed to transport over 20,000 passengers per hour. It is part of a long-term plan to construct a citywide loop transportation network. Signed during the 2025 World Governments Summit (WGS), the MoU aims to strengthen the partnership between both parties in tunnel excavation and construction. The MoU was signed by Mattar Al Tayer, Director General, Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of RTA; and John Hering, Lead Investor and Senior Advisor to The Boring Company, in the presence of senior officials from both sides. The MoU 'aims to implement cutting-edge technologies, foster innovative transport solutions, and create a dynamic ecosystem for the advancement of transportation technologies,' said Al Tayer. 'The agreement facilitates knowledge and expertise exchange to develop transportation systems tailored to the city's evolving needs,' he stated. He added that the technology used in the system offers rapid execution, lower costs than conventional tunneling methods, and minimal impact on existing infrastructure and road networks. The MoU, Al Tayer noted, involves conducting studies and exchanging information on the specifications and standards required by the RTA for innovative transport systems, as well as insights into current and future trends in the mobility market. It also focuses on gathering data on system developments, pilot routes, and applied safety standards. Hering highlighted the advantages of the loop system. 'The Boring Company aims to transform the transportation sector by constructing safe, fast, and cost-efficient tunnels for passenger transit, utilities, and freight.' He noted that the loop system incorporates innovative and sustainable technologies. 'The loop system offers rapid connectivity solutions, enhancing passenger mobility and reducing travel time thanks to the speed and seamless flow of tunnel transportation.' Hering added: 'The company adopts a fully integrated vertical approach to streamline operations and reduce costs. It designs and manufactures its own Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs), engineers tunnel structures and stations, operates tunnel excavation machinery, and manages the underground loop transportation system.'
