PM Narendra Modi inaugurates Kanpur Metro, built by Afcons

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], May 30: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday inaugurated a 5-kilometre stretch of the underground Kanpur Metro. Of this, one completed station--Kanpur Central Metro Station--and 2.4 kilometre of tunnelling have been executed by infrastructure major M/s Afcons Infrastructure Ltd.
Afcons-led consortium is executing the KNPCC-06 package, which was awarded on March 14, 2022. The project includes design and construction of a 3.826 kilometre underground stretch comprising three metro stations: Kanpur Central, Jhakarkatti, and Transport Nagar, two twin tunnels bored using two shield Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs), with others.
Tunnelling along this stretch posed significant challenges due to the presence of dilapidated buildings. However, Afcons successfully navigated these complexities and completed the tunnelling work safely and efficiently.
Construction of Kanpur Central Station, which began in December 2022, and the tunnelling works between Kanpur Central and Nawabganj, initiated in August 2023, have both been completed.
Afcons, which has been associated with Kanpur Metro since its early phases, was previously responsible for the Priority Section under package KNPCC-02. This package included an elevated viaduct and nine elevated stations from IIT Kanpur to Motijheel. Afcons completed this section in record time despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. The section was commissioned and opened to the public in June 2021.
Afcons is a leader in metro construction in India, with a presence in over 10 cities. The company has executed and delivered complex projects, including India's first underwater tunnel in Kolkata, the country's first four-layer transportation system, a 5.6 kilometre double-decker viaduct for the Nagpur Metro, and one of the largest underground metro stations in India.

New Delhi: Anil Agarwal-led mining firm Vedanta Ltd on Friday, May 30 said the committee of directors has approved raising up to Rs 5,000 crore via issuance of debentures. The committee approved the issuance of 5 lakh unsecured, rated, listed, redeemable non-convertible debentures (NCDs) of face value of Rs 1 lakh each on a private placement basis, according to a regulatory filing by Vedanta. 'The duly authorised committee of directors at its meeting held today has considered and approved the issuance of unsecured, rated, listed, redeemable, non-convertible debentures (NCDs) on a private placement basis aggregating up to Rs 5,000 crore,' the company said in the filing. In the January-March quarter, Vedanta reported a 154.4 per cent growth in its consolidated net profit to Rs 3,483 crore which was pushed by lower production costs and higher volumes. The company had posted a net profit of Rs 1,369 crore in the year-ago period. During Q4 FY25, its income rose to Rs 41,216 crore from Rs 36,093 crore in the year-ago period. As on March 31, 2025, the company's gross debt stood at Rs 73,853 crore. A top official of the company said that the demerger of its businesses is expected by the end of September this year. 'We are on track to finish (the demerger) by the second quarter end,' said Vedanta CFO Ajay Goel while talking to news agency PTI. Vedanta Ltd is one of the world's leading natural resources, critical minerals, energy, and technology companies spanning across India, South Africa, Namibia, Liberia, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Korea, Taiwan, and Japan with significant operations in sectors like oil and gas, zinc, lead, silver, copper, iron ore and steel. The appellate tribunal National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) has stayed the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) orders against the demerger of the multinational mining company into separate entities and subsequent listing. The Mumbai bench of NCLT had on March 4, 2025 rejected the first motion petition moved for the composite scheme of arrangement between Vedanta in the matter of Talwandi Sabo Power Ltd (TSPL), observing that 'material facts have not been disclosed' regarding its debt obligations, which was against the Companies Act. NEW DELHI (Reuters) -Tata Group's Air India is in talks with Airbus and Boeing for a major new aircraft order including some 200 extra single-aisle planes, topping up a mammoth deal in 2023 as the former state carrier pursues a multi-billion revamp, industry sources said. The order discussions, which two of the sources said could involve hundreds of airplanes in total spread across various sizes, expand on previously reported discussions for a further batch of large wide-body aircraft, they told Reuters. Air India, Boeing and Airbus all declined comment. Word of a potential new blockbuster order from India's flag carrier emerged as global airline bosses gathered in the world's fastest-growing aviation market for an industry summit to be addressed by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday. Air India placed a then-record order for 470 planes from both suppliers in 2023 and another 100 Airbus jets last year. The back-to-back plane orders come at a time when aircraft manufacturers are scrambling with supply chain issues leading to severe delays in aircraft delivery and a looming jet shortage. Getting new planes is crucial for Air India, which has suffered from years of under-investment under government ownership and is now undertaking an ambitious modernisation plan to recapture market share lost to global rivals. The exact number of narrowbody jets under the new order was not immediately clear but two sources put it in the hundreds and one said it involved a provisional total of 200 narrow-body planes, which are the workhorse of aviation fleets worldwide.
