FC Goa strolls to Kalinga Super Cup title with 3-0 win over Jamshedpur FC

Bhubaneswar, May 4 (UNI) As the final whistle blew and rain kept pouring at the Kalinga Stadium, it was as though the heavens joined in to mark FC Goa's crowning moment. With the players singing and dancing in the rainstorm, the Gaurs lifted the Kalinga Super Cup 2025 in style, storming past Jamshedpur FC 3-0 in a commanding final performance on Saturday night. Borja Herrera led the charge with a brilliant brace, while Dejan Dražić added the finishing touch on a night that blended grit, glory, and a touch of cinematic flair. The victory marked FC Goa's first trophy under head coach Manolo Márquez, whose chapter at the club came to an end in the perfect manner. It was Goa's second Super Cup title overall, making them the first club to win the tournament twice. The result also secured their qualification for the AFC Champions League Two 2025-26 as they will return to an Asian club competition after four years. The match was billed as a battle between FC Goa's attacking firepower and Jamshedpur's unbreached defence, yet by full-time, it was clear which side had stamped its authority. Jamshedpur, known for their compact shape and counter-attacking style, and having not conceded a single goal until the final, simply couldn't cope with Goa's expansive play. While Jamshedpur did show some early promise, Javier Hernández forcing a sharp save from Hrithik Tiwari in the third minute, the momentum quickly swung in Goa's favour. With Aakash Sangwan and Dejan Dražić tearing down the wings and Carl McHugh and Borja pulling the strings in midfield, Goa dominated both possession and territory. The opener arrived in the 23rd minute. Sangwan made a blistering run down the left and unleashed a powerful drive that Albino Gomes could only parry. Borja was first to the rebound — his first shot was blocked, but he coolly slotted the second into the roof of the net. Jamshedpur's best chance came late in the first half when Lazar Ćirković's header rattled the crossbar, but their lack of attacking thrust was evident throughout. FC Goa doubled their lead in the 51st minute with a moment of brilliance. Borja, picking the ball up near midfield, surged forward and unleashed a ferocious 25-yard strike that arrowed into the top corner, leaving Gomes helpless. Khalid Jamil's men tried to claw their way back, with Jordan Murray setting up Javier Siverio, but the forward blasted over from close range. The third and final goal came in the 71st minute and showcased Goa's poise and precision. McHugh dissected the defence with a perfectly weighted through ball, and Dražić latched on, rounded the keeper, and tapped home into an empty net. As the match wound down and rain began to fall, the mood turned celebratory as FC Goa's players danced to cap off a wonderful performance and embrace their moment in history. Borja was presented the Kalinga Player of the Match by Sonali Chand, Officer on Special Duty, Sports and Youth Services Department, Government of Odisha. UNI BM ARN

Goa gives Marquez a perfect parting gift

'Good things come to those who wait' goes a popular saying. Head coach Manolo Marquez certainly waited until the very last moment to lift a piece of silverware with FC Goa. After two seasons of near misses, Marquez finally had a trophy in his arms as Goa beat Jamshedpur FC 3-0 in the Super Cup 2025 final at the Kalinga Stadium here on Saturday. Borja Herrera scored in either half, while Dejan Drazic sealed the deal to help the Gaurs secure an AFC Champions League Two Preliminary Round spot and a second Super Cup title. 𝐁𝐀𝐂𝐊 𝐈𝐍 𝐀𝐒𝐈𝐀𝐀𝐀𝐀!!!🇮🇳🇮🇳🇮🇳 We are packing some Rechado Masala for the Asian continent! 🥵🌶️ Presenting your Kalinga Super Cup 2025 Champions, FC Goa, arriving soon in the AFC Champions League 2 playoffs! 🫡 — FC Goa (@FCGoaOfficial) May 3, 2025 Marquez's men opened the scoring in the 23rd minute when left-back Aakash Sangwan's shot was saved by Albino Gomes before the ball fell in front of Borja inside the box. His first shot was blocked brilliantly in front of goal by Stephen Eze, and fortunately for the Spaniard, the ball came right back to him and this time he made no mistake of smashing it into the back of the net for his third goal of the campaign. At the other end, the Red Miners came close to scoring in the dying minutes of the first half when Lazar Cirkovic's header from the edge of the box struck the crossbar. While Borja's first strike required a bit of luck, his second was pure skill and precision. Six minutes into the second half, he collected the ball in the middle of the pitch and drove into space before lashing at the ball with his left boot's lace. A stretching Gomes could only watch helplessly as the ball glided into the top right corner. They put the final nail in the coffin when Carl McHugh spotted Drazic's run in the final third with a defence-splitting through ball. The Serbian took a touch to take the ball past an advancing Gomes and slotted it into the goal. It was a perfect parting gift for Marquez, who will now focus solely on his duties with the Indian men's football team. The result: Goa 3 (Borja 23, 51, Drazic 72) bt JFC 0.

Super Cup: FC Goa strike late to floor Punjab

But Manolo Marquez 's side turned the tide with a 88 minute equaliser from Borja Herrera and the winner from substitute Mohammed Yasir (92+2) to enter the semifinals where they will take on Mohun Bagan Super Giant on Wednesday. Manolo named an unchanged starting 11 that came into the quarterfinal fixture after a convincing 3-0 win against I-League outfit Gokulam Kerala FC. Last match hat-trick hero Iker Guarrotxena led the charge for Goa with support from Borja and Dejan Drazic. While Goa got off to a flying start, they could have almost been stunned after a well-worked Punjab set piece. A dangerous corner allowed Punjab captain Nikhil Prabhu room for a clever header, but goalkeeper Hrithik Tiwari came up with a crucial block. Although Goa defeated Punjab in both legs of the , Panagiotis Dilmperis' side showed promise to make amends. Muhammad Suhail burst into the right flank and skilfully took on centre-back Sandesh Jhingan. Suhail then whipped in a dangerous cross across goal but didn't find any teammates to guide it home. At the other end, Iker won a freekick on the edge of the box, but Borja aimed his effort straight into the wall. Soon, Dejan found Borja with a delightful through ball, but Punjab goalkeeper Muheet Shabir came out of his line to deny the Spaniard in a one-on-one situation. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now In the second half, Goa brought in Sahil Tavora and he came close with a long ranger which had to be blocked by Shabir with a diving save. However, it were Punjab who broke the deadlock in the 57 minute. Suhail cut through the wings and unleashed a grounder which came off the upright. But the rebound fell straight to Vidal, who smashed it home for the opener. Manolo needed more options upfront and introduced Brison Fernandes along with Jay Gupta in defence. Goa created chances but they were simply not good enough to break the rival defence. Manolo decided to sacrifice Jhingan and sent young forward Alan Saji in. Goa kept on pushing, and with two minutes on the clock, their hard work paid off. Brison's cross was not cleared cleanly by Ashis Pradhan and Borja chested the ball down and unleashed a clean half volley for the equaliser. The teams were heading for penalties, but Goa had other plans. Their persistence was rewarded as Yasir got hold of the ball inside the danger zone and unleashed a shot which deflected off Croatian Ivan Novoselec to deceive Shabir. In the final minutes, Punjab's Pramveer was sent off for a second booking.
