Bawankule slams NMC over delay in retaining wall works

Nagpur: Nearly 20 months after the devastating flash floods of September 2023, critical retaining wall works across Nagpur's rivers remain incomplete, exposing the city to yet another monsoon disaster. At a high-level review meeting on Saturday, guardian minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule criticised the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) and contractors, citing delays, fund mismanagement, and subletting of major projects. The meeting, attended by senior officials including chief engineer Manoj Talewar, MLAs Pravin Datke, Krishna Khopde, and former corporator Narendra Borkar, revealed that despite a sanctioned outlay of Rs204.71 crore for flood mitigation including Rs163.23 crore for 56 retaining wall works and Rs33.74 crore for 41 damaged roads, progress was sluggish. NMC's own presentation claimed 50 wall projects were complete and 5 ongoing. However, independent reports and ground feedback exposed a different picture, especially in flood-hit areas like Kumbhartoli, where no work had begun. Officials admitted that contractors who took up assignments worth Rs10 crore and Rs6 crore under the Rs150 crore tender sublet them to petty agencies with limited capacity. "This subcontracting without oversight has brought the entire project to a crawl," Borkar told TOI, who also attended the meeting. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Brits Are Replacing Costly AC's With This Tiny Cooler AiraBreeze Learn More Undo Even more alarming was the funds bottleneck. Though tenders worth Rs154.42 crore were floated, only Rs86.63 crore was disbursed. Contractors blamed this for halting work midway. NMC has now requested the state govt to release the remaining Rs70.26 crore. Bawankule, visibly displeased, instructed the NMC to submit a fresh proposal to the state govt for additional funds to cover remaining disaster management works, including parallel sewage and stormwater infrastructure. He also directed the municipal commissioner to immediately conduct zone-wise meetings with MLAs and ex-corporators and prepare a detailed disaster preparedness report before the monsoon sets in. He further ordered two Janta Darbar sessions at Gandhibagh and Lakadganj to directly address citizens' grievances. A zone-level review will also be held ahead of the next public hearing. Borkar pointed out that NMC is prioritising projects in areas with no immediate threat, while vulnerable localities continue to suffer. "This mismanagement is nothing short of negligence," he said.

Amid RG protest, TCP dept issues stop-work order for Bambolim project

Panaji: Under pressure from Revolutionary Goans (RG), the town and country planning department on Wednesday issued an order asking Worldwide Resorts and Entertainment to stop work on its project at Bambolim. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The TCP department said that Worldwide Resorts and Entertainment failed to obtain the necessary environmental clearances for the hotel. The TCP department issued a technical clearance for the hotel in March 2024 on the condition that all the other necessary permissions would be obtained before construction began. 'It is observed that you have undertaken construction activities without obtaining prior environmental clearances as prescribed under EM Notification 2006, and therefore, you have violated the condition,' said Prakash Bandodkar , the deputy town planner. The application for environmental clearance is pending before the Goa State Environment Impact Assessment Authority .A cursory site inspection conducted by the TCP department last week noted observations that appeared to be a rupture of the aquifers and substantial hill-cutting. RG MLA Viresh Borkar filed a complaint with the TCP and the directorate of panchayats, claiming that Worldwide Resorts and Entertainment violated norms while constructing the hotel at Bambolim. Bandodkar said that govt issued a note to the department with directions to 'immediately put a stop to the construction activities' because of non-compliance with conditions imposed by the department. Just a few days earlier, the Goa State Environment Impact Assessment Authority (Goa-SEIAA) issued a similar stop-work order asking Worldwide Resorts and Entertainment to stop work on its project at Bambolim. Borkar and RG president Manoj Parab, have been camping outside the department building even at night as part of a protest against the illegalities. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now 'This department was sleeping, and we had to come here to wake them up. We want an FIR registered against the project proponent under the Environment Protection Act because they have violated the law. An FIR should be lodged against govt officials who did not act. We want to see if the home department acts,' said Borkar.

5 Money Moves To Prepare Your Finances for Summer Travel Season

According to Squaremouth, a travel insurance comparison service, the average cost of a summer trip, especially to Europe, is expected to increase by 38% this year to $10,346.1 Instead of scrambling to reduce costs while traveling or dipping too deeply into savings, some financial prep now can allow travelers to enjoy the summer travel season without regret. Here are five money moves to prepare your finances for the summer travel season. Read Next: Check Out: It helps to define what matters most during one's summer travel plans before allocating money or making travel decisions. 'Before you book anything, ask yourself what you want from this trip,' said Stoy Hall, CEO and founder of the financial planning firm Black Mammoth.2 'Is it relaxation, family bonding, exploration, self-reflection? That answer drives your budget and priorities.' Hall explained, 'You don't need a five-star hotel to make memories. You need presence, peace of mind and maybe a little paella.' Once travelers set an intention, they should brainstorm their top three desired experiences for the trip. 'Not destinations or things to buy, but emotions or outcomes,' Hall said. 'Then allocate your budget toward those. Want more quality time with your kids? Spend on a spacious Airbnb, not theme park merch. Want cultural immersion? Skip the resort. Book a cooking class or local guide.' See More: Before summer travel begins, it's important to establish a clear spending framework that outlines how much will be used and when. A defined pre-trip budget helps maintain financial control, prevent overspending and preserve a post-vacation savings buffer. 'Evaluate your finances and make sure that going on a vacation is the right move for you at this point in time and how much you have to allocate toward the trip,' said Adem Selita, co-founder of The Debt Relief Company.3 Selita explained, 'Set a realistic budget by accounting for almost everything you'll do throughout the course of the trip. Although it's next to impossible to account for everything, we can at least try to estimate how much money we'll spend on food and daytime activities.' Relocating funds with intention can ease the strain of higher seasonal summer expenses. Whether it's setting aside money regularly or shifting money from discretionary, a proactive approach helps ensure that resources are available for summer travel. For example, Isheeta Borkar, co-owner and author of Travelicious Couple,4 recommended establishing a dedicated, high-yield savings account dedicated for travel. 'Automate small weekly transfers (even $25 or $50) a few months in advance,' Borkar said. 'You'll be surprised how fast it adds up.' Travelers should look to their current subscriptions and discretionary spending as places to reallocate or save money. 'Pausing a few unused memberships or cutting back on takeout for a month can reallocate hundreds toward your trip,' Borkar said. Payment methods can shape spending habits and post-trip financial health. When using travel rewards cards, the goal is to stay in control — prioritizing value, minimizing risk and avoiding spending beyond set limits. 'Travel rewards credit cards offer a lot of great perks that make travel less expensive,' said Jeremy Murchland, president and CEO at Seven Corners Travel Insurance.5 'Before you open one and perhaps pay an annual fee, make sure it's really worth it.' Prospective summer travelers should also research travel rewards credit cards and evaluate whether the offered perks will be used often enough to justify the fees. 'Figure out if you can completely pay off your balance each month,' Murchland said. 'The interest you'll pay is likely more than you'll ever save in rewards if you carry debt, and you'll end up spending more in the long run.' Small streams of passive income can help offset seasonal expenses without tapping into long-term savings. From cash-back apps to rental income or interest-earning accounts, even modest returns can provide a helpful financial buffer during high-spend months. 'For example, some people have a stream of passive income that they use solely to pay for traveling and other 'fun' things,' said Adam Hamilton, CEO of REI Hub.6 'Maybe you have a finished basement that could be turned into a short-term rental that generates a lot money for you, and those funds could help you afford your summer travel spending.' East Nagpur residents protest over frequent electricity cuts

Nagpur: A group of residents from East Nagpur on Tuesday protested over frequent power cuts outside Wathoda power station at Hiwri Nagar. The locals raised the issue of power cuts with the officials of Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd (MSEDCL) and submitted their memorandum of demands. The locals, led by former corporator Balya Borkar, gathered outside the Wathoda power station to protest over frequent power cuts. The protesters claimed that East Nagpur residents are facing several issues because of frequent and recurring power cuts. Some of the most affected areas include Garoba Maidan, Kumbhartoli, Datt Nagar, Jagjivanram Nagar, Shastri Nagar, Hivri Nagar, Padole Nagar, Deshpande Layout, Wardhaman Nagar, Satnami Nagar, Wathoda, and others. "For the past three months, these areas have been experiencing unannounced power outages almost daily — during the day, in evening, and even in the middle of the night," said the protestors. They claimed that residents have become increasingly frustrated. "Children, pregnant women, students, elderly, and ill individuals are especially suffering due to these ongoing power interruptions," said protestors. Borkar said he had received complaints from the public over phone calls, often during late-night hours. "I have repeatedly raised these public grievances before the superintending engineer, executive engineer, and other officials of MSEDCL, but no satisfactory actions have been taken so far, and the power cuts persist. This has led to growing public anger and dissatisfaction with the electricity department," he said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Google Brain Co-Founder Andrew Ng, Recommends: Read These 5 Books And Turn Your Life Around Blinkist: Andrew Ng's Reading List Undo He also claimed that chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, while he was deputy CM, approved a fund of Rs50 crore for new measures to improve power infrastructure in the area. "This included the construction of new substations, installation of higher-capacity transformers, laying of new cables, replacement of damaged electric poles, and other necessary upgrades. However, despite the availability of funds, the work is progressing at a very slow pace, raising questions about the functioning of MSEDCL," said Borkar. Interestingly, the frequent power cuts are not only limited to East Nagpur but are being reported across the city in recent days. These power cuts during the scorching summer have left many citizens harassed.
