East Nagpur residents protest over frequent electricity cuts
Nagpur: A group of residents from East Nagpur on Tuesday protested over frequent power cuts outside Wathoda power station at Hiwri Nagar. The locals raised the issue of power cuts with the officials of
Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company
Ltd (MSEDCL) and submitted their memorandum of demands.
The locals, led by former corporator Balya Borkar, gathered outside the Wathoda power station to protest over frequent power cuts. The protesters claimed that East Nagpur residents are facing several issues because of frequent and recurring power cuts. Some of the most affected areas include Garoba Maidan, Kumbhartoli, Datt Nagar, Jagjivanram Nagar, Shastri Nagar, Hivri Nagar, Padole Nagar, Deshpande Layout, Wardhaman Nagar, Satnami Nagar, Wathoda, and others.
"For the past three months, these areas have been experiencing unannounced power outages almost daily — during the day, in evening, and even in the middle of the night," said the protestors. They claimed that residents have become increasingly frustrated. "Children, pregnant women, students, elderly, and ill individuals are especially suffering due to these ongoing power interruptions," said protestors.
Borkar said he had received complaints from the public over phone calls, often during late-night hours. "I have repeatedly raised these public grievances before the superintending engineer, executive engineer, and other officials of MSEDCL, but no satisfactory actions have been taken so far, and the power cuts persist. This has led to growing public anger and dissatisfaction with the electricity department," he said.

He also claimed that chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, while he was deputy CM, approved a fund of Rs50 crore for new measures to improve power infrastructure in the area. "This included the construction of new substations, installation of higher-capacity transformers, laying of new cables, replacement of damaged electric poles, and other necessary upgrades. However, despite the availability of funds, the work is progressing at a very slow pace, raising questions about the functioning of MSEDCL," said Borkar.
Interestingly, the frequent power cuts are not only limited to East Nagpur but are being reported across the city in recent days. These power cuts during the scorching summer have left many citizens harassed.
