Borough Theatre Abergavenny announces new concert series

The Borough Theatre in Abergavenny is launching Boro Bites, a programme of one-hour, unplugged concerts set to run beneath the theatre in Abergavenny library, with the first show taking place on September 4 at 2.30pm. The concerts will run monthly through to December, with each show offering a different musical flavour in an intimate setting. Huw Williams, the UK folk music legend behind hits for Fairport Convention, will open the series with a performance dedicated to the golden age of Broadway. Mr Williams said: "That's the thing about all the shows in this series. "There's no amplification or 'electrickery' – just wonderful, unvarnished music. "It's an atmosphere that connects performer and audience in such a personal, intimate way." His set will include songs and stories from classic musicals such as Oklahoma, Guys And Dolls and My Fair Lady. The final concert on December 4 will feature Pat Smith and Ned Clamp in a festive special, complete with songs, spoon-playing, and an appearance by the Mari Lwyd – the ghostly, horse-skull figure of Welsh folklore. Other highlights include a '60s sing-along with the Blaenau Gwent Rhythm Band on October 16 and a performance by folk trio Burn The Fiddle on November 13. Tickets cost £8 and include tea or coffee and biscuits, with mince pies for the December show. Tickets are available online at the Borough Theatre website or by calling the box office on 01873 850 805.

Abergavenny: Borough Theatre summer school for teenagers

A summer school for 11- to 16-year-olds will run at Abergavenny's Borough Theatre from Monday, July 28, to Friday, August 1, offering a space to explore creativity and community through performance. The programme is part of the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF)-backed Creative Futures project and costs £150 per person, with bursaries available. Katherine McDermid Smith, project lead for Creative Futures, said: "The arts are such a powerful tool in helping us shape our ideas and building a better understanding of who we are. "This summer school is all about creating something new and relevant, shaped by the most innovative artists around – young people." Theatre facilitators Junior Mujica and Mari Luz Cervantes will guide attendees through workshops in improv, writing, devising, and physical theatre. Participants will work together to create an original performance, to be shared with friends and family on the final day. Ms McDermid Smith said: "Junior and Mari bring such energy to the workshops they lead. "You can tell that the young people really trust them, this evident in the incredibly honest work that they produce with the groups that they work with." Guy Masterson to perform Under Milk Wood in Abergavenny

The globally acclaimed solo performance will take place at the Borough Theatre on Friday, May 9, at 7.30pm. Mr Masterson, who has performed the piece more than 2,000 times worldwide since 1993, brings to life all 69 of Dylan Thomas' characters from the fictional Welsh town of Llareggub. The show captures the beauty, humour, and pathos of a single day in the town, enhanced by a soundscape from Matt Clifford, known for his work with The Rolling Stones. The production is inspired by Mr Masterson's uncle, Richard Burton. This isn't Mr Masterson's first visit to Abergavenny; he last performed a one-man show, A Christmas Carol, in December. Tickets for Under Milk Wood are priced at £18 and can be purchased from the theatre's website or box office, or by calling 01873 850805.
