Sam Heughan and Jessica De Gouw Rank The Couple Next Door Characters in Order of Who Lost Their S–t Most By the Finale
Now that The Couple Next Door's final episode has aired Stateside, it's time for some scholarly and in-depth analysis of a profound query: Which character in the kooky, erotic thriller loses their damn minds the most in the season finale?
In case you're new to the show, a) you can stream it in full on Starz, and b) let me catch you up real quick. Sam Heughan (Outlander) and Jessica De Gouw (Arrow) play Danny and Becka, married swingers who prove infinitely intriguing to Evie (Eleanor Tomlinson, Poldark) when she and her husband, Pete (Alfred Enoch, How to Get Away With Murder) move into their suburban neighborhood. After they sleep together during an ill-advised couples' weekend away, Evie slowly becomes infatuated with Danny. Pete becomes infatuated with the fact that Evie is infatuated with Danny. It's a whole thing. (Get a taste with the premiere recap here.)

In the finale, the sordid situation comes to a head in a cabin in the woods. Evie is pregnant with Danny's baby. Pete has a gun. There's a hitman outside, for Danny-related reasons that aren't super important at this moment. We're in full-on madness mode by the time the core four are yelling at each other within the wooden walls. Eventually Pete shoots Danny (non-fatally), then Evie shoots Pete (also non-fatally, but way worse than Danny), and it all ends with Evie and her father (don't ask) being arrested. As she's taken away, Evie locks eyes with Danny and smiles in a way that is incredibly unsettling.
Hence, our query to Heughan and De Gouw: Who's the hottest mess in the season's final hour? Lucky for us, they played along.
TVLINE | By the time we get to the finale, by the time we're at the cabin, I would like you both please — you can collaborate if you like — rank who has lost their s—t the most by the time we get there?JESSICA DE GOUW | [Almost instantly] Probably HEUGHAN | GOUW | Evie first. Evie, Pete, Danny, | Yeah, that's the pecking order. I mean, Evie's a hundred. She's pretty much maxed GOUW | She is maxed out. She is on another planet. She is unreachable, I think. But then Pete is also, in a way, unreachable. Just through so much pain and | Actually, by the end, Danny and Becka are almost there. They're almost back to getting their s—t back together. They're working through it… But actually: So many of the characters lose their s—t. [Laughs]DE GOUW | Yeah, yeah. Totally. The beauty of the finale is that we're seeing these crumbs of real honesty and reconnection with Danny and Becka. So you're watching them amongst this absurdity, and they're finding each other.
TVLINE | Do you both think that they're going to be able to patch things up together?DE GOUW | Yeah. | I hope so, yeah. We're rooting for them, right? I hope the audience are. As you said, 'crumbs,' because they really are crumbs. But they are communicating. It feels like if they can both be honest, it'll maybe get back there.
