Boston marathon raised $50M+ for charity in 2025, setting record

The 2025 Boston Marathon raised $50.4 million for charity, surpassing a single-year record set in 2024, the Boston Athletic Association announced. The total combines funds raised through 176 non-profit organizations in the Bank of America Boston Marathon Official Charity Program, as well as donations and fundraising from those who participated in the race. Since the official charity program launched in 1989, more than $600 million has been raised. The charity program makes up about 10% of the field in the marathon, with organizations recruiting athletes to raise money for their cause. Organizations participating in the charity program include the Boys and Girls Club of Boston, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and World Central Kitchen. A full list is published on the association's website. 'Every year, participants and community members raise the bar and elevate the fundraising impact for meaningful causes throughout the community,' said Nicole Juri, director of development for the BAA. 'Their uplifting effect extends well beyond the 26.2-mile racecourse of the Boston Marathon. Athletes take pride in adding meaning to every step of their marathon journey, and together set new records in 2025.' In an effort to boost the fundraising, the association held a giving day on March 20, offering incentives for donations throughout the day. Nearly $2 million — $1.87 million — was raised that day. The 2025 total shows the 'power of the Boston Marathon,' said Bank of America Marketing, Digital and Specialized Consumer Client Solutions President David Tyrie. 'Anything is possible when athletes from around the world, volunteers, local businesses, supporters and many more unite in the spirit of determination, selflessness and giving.' Boston Marathon 2025: Date, start time, route, how to watch and everything you need to know about the prestigious race

On Monday, over 30,000 runners will gather to take part in one of the most prestigious races in the United States. The 2025 Boston Marathon kicks off early, with events starting at 6 a.m. ET. Monday will mark the 129th running of the Boston Marathon. Both of last year's champions from the men's and women's side will look to repeat in 2025, with one of them going for a historic victory. With the event just around the corner, here's everything you need to know about the 2025 Boston Marathon. The 2025 Boston Marathon will be held Monday, April 21. The event is traditionally held on Patriots' Day, which commemorates the inaugural battles of the American Revolution. Patriots' Day is observed in the following seven states: Connecticut, Florida, Maine, Massachusetts, North Dakota, Tennessee and Wisconsin. Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts and North Dakota observe the holiday on the third Monday in April, which is traditionally when the Boston Marathon takes place. The other three stats observe Patriots' Day on April 19. The 2025 Boston Marathon kicks off early, with the military march starting at 6 a.m. ET. The men's and women's wheelchair races begin just after 9 a.m. ET. Below is a full list of start times for the 2025 Boston Marathon. All times are ET. 6 a.m.: Military march 9:06 a.m.: Men's wheelchair 9:09 a.m.: Women's wheelchair 9:30 a.m.: Handcycles & Duos 9:37 a.m.: Professional men 9:47 a.m.: Professional women 9:50 a.m.: Para athletics division 10:00 a.m.: Wave 1 10:25 a.m.: Wave 2 10:50 a.m.: Wave 3 11:15 a.m.: Wave 4 Each wave features open division runners. Runners are put into different waves depending on their pace. The 2025 Boston Marathon will start in Hopkinton. Runners will then reach Ashland at roughly the four-mile mark and proceed to Framingham six miles in. From there, runners will pass through Natick and Wellesley, which sits just before the halfway point. Newton and Brookline mark the final stretch before the race ends on Boylston Street in Boston. The entire course length is 26 miles and 385 yards — or 26.2 miles — which is standard marathon length. The finish line is located in Copley Square, a public square in Boston known for its historical landmarks. Both 2024 champions on the men's and women's side will compete again in 2025. Sisay Lemma, an Ethiopian runner, will look to win it all again on the men's side after finishing the event in 2:06:17 last year. On the women's side, Kenyan runner Hellen Obiri is going for a historic victory. Obiri has won the last two Boston Marathons. If she takes home the win in 2025, it would mark the fifth time a woman has won the event in three consecutive years. Fatuma Roba is the last woman to accomplish that feat, winning the Boston Marathon from 1997-99. The Boston Athletic Association maintains a full list of winners at the event, dating back to 1897, the first year the Boston Marathon was held. Weather shouldn't be a factor during the 2025 Boston Marathon. It's expected to be partly cloudy in Boston on Monday, with a high of 57 degrees during the day. There's a chance of rain later that evening, but it isn't expected to impact the race. Local coverage will begin at 4 a.m. ET on WCVB Channel 5 (ABC) in Boston. Live streaming is available through the Very Local app, which is only available in select cities. Local ABC channels will also carry the event in Maine, New Hampshire, New York and Vermont. National coverage will take place on ESPN2. The network will begin covering the 2025 Boston Marathon at 9 a.m. ET. Coverage on ESPN2 will run until 12:30 p.m. ET.

Military marchers set out from Hopkinton to start the 129th Boston Marathon

HOPKINTON, Mass. (AP) — A group of Massachusetts National Guard members early Monday crossed the Boston Marathon start line, launching the 129th edition of the world's oldest and most prestigious annual marathon. Race Director Dave McGillivray sent the group of about 40 people in uniform off at 6 a.m. He thanked them for their service and said it's a highlight of the day to see them out on the course each year. It was extra special this year since Monday is the 250th anniversary of Patriots' Day, McGillivray said after. The race is held annually on the state holiday that commemorates the start of the Revolutionary War. 'We appreciate their service, and just the fact that it's Patriots' Day gives it even more meaning,' he said. One of the military marchers, Lt. John Lee, said that all of the history 'comes to the forefront on a special day like today.' 'I just wanted to be a part of it,' he said. The town of Hopkinton, located about 26.2 miles (42.1 kilometers) west of Boston, is the gathering place for a field of about 30,000 runners preparing for the trek to Copley Square. Race organizers are also celebrating the 50th anniversary of the first wheelchair race. Bob Hall begged his way into the 1975 Boston Marathon, promising to finish the course in 3 hours or less. He did it, and since then the wheelchair marathon has grown into a highly competitive event — not just in Boston, but around the world. Forecasts called for partly sunny skies, light winds and temperatures mostly in the 50s to low-60s for those who make it to Back Bay in the afternoon. McGillivray will jump in with the second wave of athletes to start the race with his son, making this his 53rd Boston Marathon. 'I think it'll be perfect conditions for all of us,' McGillivray said. 'This is 12 months of planning. So many different organizations and cities are involved. It all just needs to come together, all aligned. Typically it does. And that's what we're expecting.' Reigning champions Sisay Lemma of Ethiopia and Hellen Obiri of Kenya return to defend their titles. Lemma separated from the pack of elite men's runners early on last year and ran alone most of the morning, finishing in the 10th fastest time in race history. Most of the top men's finishers from 2024 are returning, including Kenya's Evans Chebet, the two-time Boston Marathon champion who was third last year. Obiri is trying to become the first woman to win three in a row since 1999. Last year Obiri broke away from a large pack late to become the first woman to repeat as Boston Marathon champion since 2005. Top American contenders include Emma Bates. The former Boston resident finished fifth in the women's race in 2023 and 12th last year, making her the highest American finisher both years. This year the women's field will be the fastest ever, with 14 athletes who have personal-best marathon times below 2 hours, 26 minutes, according to the Boston Athletic Association.
