Man convicted of attempting to kidnap, rape woman on Mass. walking path
A Fall River man has been convicted of attempting to rape a woman as she walked on a rail trail in Fall River on a summer morning three years ago, prosecutors said. Paulo Silva, 28, of Fall River, was found guilty by a Bristol Superior Court jury on Thursday of assault with intent to rape, attempted kidnapping and related charges, according to Bristol District Attorney Thomas Quinn III. A woman, then 52, said Silva accosted and attempted to sexually assault her on the Quequechan Rail Trail in Fall River on July 18, 2022. Fall River Police were called to the path around 7 that morning, where the woman said she had noticed Silva interacting with a pregnant woman. As she walked past the pair, Silva began to follow the woman, she said. He grabbed her arm and began to push her off the trail and toward a grassy embankment of the Quequechan River, while 'verbally indicating he was going to sexually assault her,' according to prosecutors. The woman screamed for help, and Silva ran away as two people nearby rushed to the commotion. Fall River detectives viewed surveillance video showing Silva entering his car at the trailhead soon after the incident. He later told the investigators he had tried to obtain the phone number of a woman walking on the trail. Silva admitted to grabbing the victim as she strode past and pulling her toward the embankment. He indicated to police that he planned to sexually assault the woman, but released her and ran when she called for help, prosecutors said. 'It is extremely concerning that a woman can't even enjoy a morning walk without being attacked,' Quinn said in a statement. 'The defendant also approached and harassed a pregnant woman before trying to rape the victim. The defendant poses a clear danger to the public and does not belong on the street.' Silva was sentenced Friday to between four-and-a-half and five-and-a-half years in state prison, followed by two years of probation, according to Quinn's office. The sentence was shorter than the one sought by assistant district attorneys Kalene Kobza and Gillian Kirsch, who prosecuted the case and requested that Silva be locked up for seven to 12 years. PHOTOS: Megan Moroney kicks in some country to get Boston Calling 2025 rolling
The self-proclaimed 'Emo Cowgirl' turned some heads in Boston on a rainy Friday night and it's not just because of those shiny white boots, bright red dress and matching lipstick. Megan Moroney took the stage after Sheryl Crow and got the country fans in attendance ready for two-time Country Music Association Award for Entertainer of the Year winner Luke Combs with her own award-winning country twang. Moroney, 27, went from watching Kenny Chesney in concert from section 312 of Mercedes-Benz Stadium in 2018, to dropping a duet with Mr. No Shoes Nation just a few weeks back called 'You Had to Be There.' She first got noticed when she opened for Chase Rice while she was a student at the University of Georgia. Speaking of Moroney and Combs, she actually made an appearance in his 'Beer Never Broke My Heart' music video back in 2019, well before she dropped her latest chart-topper 'Am I OK?' and 2022 breakout hit 'Tennessee Orange.' Moroney will be back in Boston this summer, when she hits Roadrunner for a pair of shows in early August. 23 of our favorite photos that summarize Boston Calling 2024 Country music superstars perform chart-topping duet at Boston Calling PHOTOS: Luke Combs wraps up Night 1 at 2025 Boston Calling Acclaimed indie band recalls Boston Calling act that left them starstruck After serious safety concerns at Boston Calling last year, fans return in 2025 T-Pain gets Boston Calling sprung on Night 1 (Photos) Boston Calling 2025 food vendors Who is Playing and When? Country music superstars perform chart-topping duet at Boston Calling
The first night of Boston Calling ended with two country music stars sharing the stage for an electrifying duet. Luke Combs brought out Megan Moroney to perform Combs' 2019 smash hit 'Beer Never Broke My Heart.' The song, which was the lead single from Combs' sophomore album 'What You See Is What You Get,' topped Billboard's Country Airplay chart, becoming Combs' sixth consecutive No. 1 on the chart. 'Beer Never Broke My Heart' has been certified six-times platinum by the RIAA as of August 23, 2023. The performance marked a full-circle moment for Moroney as the self-proclaimed 'Emo Cowgirl' appeared as an unpaid extra in the song's music video back in 2019, Combs told the crowd. Moroney also told fans about it during a VIP pre-show at a May 15 concert at the Amory in Minneapolis, Country Chord reported. The 'Am I Okay?' said her best friend drove her to Nashville so she could appear in Combs' video. 'If you literally look at the Spotify canvas, I even made it into the 8 seconds,' Moroney told fans. 'I was supposed to be the drunk girl at the bar, so I was holding up a fake beer.' The 'Tennessee Orange' singer can be seen around the 2:20 mark of the video. Moroney shows up a few more times as well. Combs' closed out night one of Boston Calling on Friday, May 23. R&B legend backs out of music festival week before due to health issues
D'Angelo had to cancel what would have been his first full live show in nine years because of health issues. The R&B singer will no longer perform at the upcoming Roots Picnic in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on Saturday, May 31 and Sunday, June 1. 'Due to an unforeseen medical delay regarding surgery (I) had earlier this year, (I've) been advised by my team of specialists that the performance this weekend could further complicate matters,' D'Angelo wrote in an Instagram post on Friday, May 23. 'It is nearly impossible to express how disappointed [I am] not to be able to play with my Brothers 'The Roots.' And even more disappointed to not see all of you,' the 51-year-old wrote. D'Angelo ended the post by thanking fans for their support, adding that he is 'in the lab' and 'can't wait to serve up what's in the pot.' Roots Picnic, which shared the Instagram post, wrote that 'we're sending love and keeping him in our thoughts as he continues to heal!' D'Angelo was announced as a performer at the music festival back in February. The singer's appearance would have been his first full set in front of a crowd since his performance at Byron Bay Bluesfest in 2016. D'Angelo's most recent live performance was at the Netflix 'Is A Joke Fest' in 2022 where he played one song with Questlove on drums and Raphael Saadiq on guitar. Other major acts on Roots Picnic's lineup include Meek Mill, Lenny Kravitz, GloRilla, Miguel, Tems, Latto and Kaytranada. The festival takes place at The Mann at Fairmount Park in Philadelphia. Tickets for the festival can be purchased online.
