Cregger's Airbnb horror film 'Barbarian' was a surprise success in 2022, earning the top spot at the box office in its opening weekend. The filmmaker originally started his career in the comedy group Whitest Kids U'Know and told Variety that the switch between genres wasn't quite as drastic as it may seem. 'I don't think horror and comedy are too dissimilar,' Cregger said in 2022. 'The anatomy of a scare is very similar to the anatomy of a laugh. It's all about timing and tone and zigging when the audience expects you to zag. I feel like my time in sketch comedy has equipped me to play in this pool.' Cregger's friend and 'Get Out' director Jordan Peele gave him some guidance. 'He gave me a crash course on how to handle the inevitable challenges, and that was so valuable.' 'Weapons' hits theaters Aug. 8. Watch the trailer below. ‘Weapons' trailer: Josh Brolin and Julia Garner search for creepy kids in Zach Cregger's new horror
The first trailer for Weapons, the upcoming horror film from Barbarian director Zach Cregger, is here, and it's as unsettling as fans might expect. Headlined by Josh Brolin, the film centers on the eerie disappearance of a group of schoolchildren in a small Florida town, unraveling a terrifying mystery. Joining Brolin are Julia Garner and Alden Ehrenreich, along with Benedict Wong, Amy Madigan, Austin Abrams, June Diane Raphael, and Cary Christopher. The story plunges into psychological horror territory as the community descends into fear, suspicion, and something far more sinister. Weapons marks Cregger's highly anticipated follow-up to his 2022 hit Barbarian, a sleeper box-office success that became a cult favourite for its inventive scares and offbeat structure. While Cregger originally made his name in sketch comedy with Whitest Kids U'Know, his transition to horror has been seamless. 'The anatomy of a scare is very similar to the anatomy of a laugh,' Cregger has said, noting that both rely heavily on timing, tension, and surprise. Produced by Roy Lee and Miri Yun (Vertigo), along with Raphael Margules and J.D. Lifshitz (BoulderLight Pictures), Weapons is set for theatrical release on August 8 via New Line Cinema. The trailer teases an atmospheric thriller with small-town dread and supernatural undertones. With echoes of Barbarian's tonal unpredictability, Cregger appears ready to expand his horror footprint.

Weapons trailer: Julia Garner, Josh Brolin and Alden Ehrenreich star in Zach Cregger's horror film
The first full-length trailer for Weapons, a new horror film from Barbarian director Zach Cregger, has been released, unveiling a chilling tale about a group of missing schoolchildren. The film follows the mysterious disappearance of an entire class of students from a small Florida town, with the children vanishing in the middle of the night, only to leave behind eerie questions. In the trailer, a young girl narrates the unsettling events: 'Every other class had all their kids, but Mrs. Gandy's room was totally empty. And do you know why? Because the night before, at 2:17 in the morning, every kid woke up, got out of bed, walked downstairs and into the dark. And they never came back.' Julia Garner stars as Mrs. Gandy, the teacher who becomes the prime suspect when her class is found missing. Josh Brolin plays Matthew, the father of one of the missing students, while Alden Ehrenreich portrays a local police officer, and Benedict Wong plays an administrator at the elementary school where the disappearances took place. Additional cast members include Austin Abrams, Cary Christopher, and others. Cregger, who gained attention for his hit film Barbarian in 2022, wrote and directed Weapons, which is produced by Cregger's producing team, including Roy Lee and Miri Yoon of Vertigo, and J.D. Lifshitz and Raphael Margules of BoulderLight Pictures. The film is set for theatrical release on August 8, 2025, by Warner Bros. In a recent interview, Cregger reflected on the similarities between horror and comedy, explaining that the two genres share timing and tone dynamics. He also noted that filmmaker Jordan Peele offered him valuable advice on navigating the challenges of filmmaking.
