Allegra choir from Newport wins in national competition
Allegra choir and its chamber choir Allegretta entered the Bournemouth Performing Arts Competition this week.
The choir competed against choirs from across the UK in Christchurch Priory.
An Allegra representative said: "Allegra (and their chamber choir Allegretta) won every category they could enter, and in addition were awarded the ultimate trophies for Song of the Day and Choir of the Year."
Dee Thomas, Allegra's chair, said: "We were the first choir to sing in the morning having had an extremely early start from Newport, and the contest continued well into the evening, but we maintained our high standards to return home with so many trophies across a wide range of categories as well as a cash prize for Choir of the Year.
"It's a reflection of the dedication each and every singer gives to the choir and to the expertise and vision of Robert T Elliott, our musical director, and our brilliantly talented accompanist Lucy Fflur Jones.
"When the adjudicator gives feedback which includes comments such as, 'The handling of one piece... was as close to perfection as I have heard,' you know you have created something special.
"These honours left us all speechless and buzzing with pride.
"We would encourage any aspiring Allegra singer who would like to be part of Newport's own award-winning female voice choir to take a look at our Facebook page where they can view a reel showing the camaraderie and success of the day, and to contact us."
