Bowen Yang Explains Why He Was So Emotional During ‘SNL' Finale Curtain Call: 'Just Processing'
After wrapping up his sixth season with the Saturday Night Live cast, Bowen Yang is reflecting on a milestone year. The 4x Emmy nominee recently explained why he was so emotional during the curtain call for last weekend's Season 50 finale of the NBC sketch comedy show, during which he could be seen hugging co-star Sarah Sherman, on the verge of tears. More from Deadline 'Saturday Night Live' Wraps Season 50 With No Cast Goodbyes In Finale As NBC Series Prepares For Departures Bowen Yang Thinks 'SNL' Should Be Allowed To Curse On Air: 'We're Dismantling The FCC' Ryan Pinkston, Anissa Borrego, Arianna Davis & Taylor Dunbar Join 'Stumble' NBC Comedy Pilot 'I think you get to a point at SNL where you understand that you're on the downswing of things,' he told Entertainment Weekly. 'I think I was just processing that being one of the last 'last nights' that I would have, and that is a huge thing.' Yang added, 'Every finale at goodnights something leaves my body because I'm just relieved from all that happened in that season and this was a big one. We went through a lot, so many fun memories. I think that was probably what was registering. I was just like, oh, I need to savor these moments before I don't have them anymore.' After the finale gave no news of cast departures, Yang dodged the question of whether he'll return for Season 51. 'No, we're not doing that,' he said with a laugh. Traditionally, veterans who decide to leave make the announcement in the weeks following the season finale. After taking some time off, Lorne Michaels gets back to work by July, with decisions on who would not be asked back usually made in August-early September. Yang joined the cast of SNL with Season 45 in 2019 after starting on the writing staff the year before. Best of Deadline 'The Last of Us' Season 2 Release Schedule: When Do New Episodes Come Out? Saturday Night Live star Bowen Yang breaks silence on why he was so emotional during season 50 finale
Bowen Yang has responded to speculation he is leaving Saturday Night Live after he was caught on camera saying an emotional goodbye to fellow cast member Sarah Sherman. During the final moments of the season finale last week, Yang and Sherman could be seen hugging closely before looking at each other sadly - both appearing to have tears in their eyes. The 34-year-old has since defended the emotional moment, explaining he was 'processing' that the season was actually over. 'I think you get to a point at where you understand that you're on the downswing of things. I think I was just processing that being one of the last "last nights" that I would have, and that is a huge thing,' Yang told Entertainment Weekly. He added that he always has a similar response during the show's season finale. 'Every finale at goodnights something leaves my body because I'm just relieved from all that happened in that season and this was a big one,' he continued. 'We went through a lot, so many fun memories. I think that was probably what was registering. I was just like, oh, I need to savor these moments before I don't have them anymore,' he added. However, the actor and podcaster avoided giving a straight answer to whether or not he will be returning for Season 51. 'No, we're not doing that,' he coyly responded, refusing to answer the question. Fans were horrified by the prospect of the fan-favorite leaving, taking to social media to share their disappointment. 'If Bowen's actually leaving I don't know how to feel. On one hand, I will always miss him on the show. On the other hand, he's had one of the most successful SNL careers of this era and it would be an appropriate time if he wants to pursue other things (we all know how it was with Wicked),' one user wrote. 'It looked like Bowen was having long heartfelt hugs with everyone so he's my only guess to be leaving. Would explain some of the sketches they did for him,' shared another. Someone else wrote: 'Okay upon waking up and seeing the full goodnights I think we worked ourselves up over nothing for a chunk of the SNL cast but Bowen is definitely gone…' 'Okay him waving though… it really feels like Bowen's leaving,' another agreed. Yang started at SNL in 2018 as a writer, and was promoted to a cast member the year after. The podcast host and actor recently starred in the Wedding Banquet and Wicked, and will be seen on big screens again later in the year with Wicked: For Good. Fans were horrified by the prospect of the fan-favorite leaving, taking to social media to share their disappointment Thank you, Scarlett Johansson, Bad Bunny, Mike Myers, and RaiNao! Goodnight! — Saturday Night Live - SNL (@nbcsnl) May 18, 2025 Bad Bunny, 31, was the musical guest for the season 50 finale, alongside host Scarlett Johansson, 40, and Mike Myers, 61. It wasn't just Yang's tearful goodbye that was noticed by viewers. During the closing segment, comedian and long-running cast member Colin Jost popped into frame and handed his wife the flowers before stealing a sweet onscreen kiss. Fans went wild on social media for the smooch, raving about the romantic moment between the couple. 'Omg, I'm in tears, Scarlett Johansson and Colin Jost on SNL,' one person said. 'Power couple energy on full display,' said another. 'They always bring great energy together,' a third person said. 'I hate how I can tell how deep in love they are just by this kiss,' someone else wrote. The actress, who shares a three-year-old son, Cosmo, with her husband, broke a record as she became the first woman to host the show seven times.

2025 Emmys Predictions: Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or a Movie
We will update this article throughout the season, along with all our predictions, so make sure to keep checking IndieWire for the latest news from the 2025 Emmys race. The nomination round of voting takes place from June 12 to June 23, with the official Emmy nominations announced Tuesday, July 15. Afterwards, final voting commences on August 18 and ends the night of August 27. The 77th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards are set to take place on Sunday, September 14, and air live on CBS at 8:00 p.m. ET/ 5:00 p.m. PT. Can only one episode win a performer an Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or a Movie? That's one of the main questions for the category this year, and one could argue both sides. With only four episodes, 'Adolescence' is running the Limited Series conversation much in the same way fellow British Netflix series 'Baby Reindeer' did last year. More from IndieWire JD Vance's 'SNL' Body Double Bowen Yang Calls Him a 'Pope Killer': 'Somebody Had to Say It' Tony Gilroy Unpacks That First 'Andor' Season 2 'Crescendo' and 'Lighting the Fuse' for What's to Come But while the star of that series, Jessica Gunning, had a whole lot of runway to show off her talents, the actress that got the best showcase in 'Adolescence,' Erin Doherty, only shows up for a quarter of the series. While seeing her opposite newcomer Owen Cooper in a tour de force performance has been a breakout moment for 'The Crown' alum, the landscape for this category is still filled with some laudable performances that may be too hard to ignore. For instance, 'Dying for Sex' star Jenny Slate is in a similar position, where her co-star Michelle Williams is one of the frontrunners for the Lead Actress in a Limited Series category, and by being her primary scene partner, voters will likely view what has been Slate's biggest and best role in years (she has mostly worked in animation and character actress roles since 2017.) There are also full ensembles offering more than one Supporting Actress contender, many of which are fellow Netflix shows. Arguably the strongest would be 'Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story,' which features Chloe Sevigny and Ari Graynor opposite performances by Javier Bardem, Nicholas Alexander Chavez, and Cooper Koch, who are expected to also receive Emmy nominations. Season 1 of the Netflix anthology series, which was focused on Jeffrey Dahmer, also earned star Niecy Nash-Betts an Emmy in this category. 'Zero Day' did not reach the level of critical or commercial success that Netflix may have expected, given its starry cast, but to hear that neither Joan Allen nor Angela Bassett has won a Primetime Emmy for one of their performances (the latter just has one for narration,) may add some momentum to their campaigns. And Netflix has been tight-lipped about 'Sirens,' but the series from the creator of 'Maid' should offer another contender in this category once it premieres in May. But to go back even earlier on the calendar, not only are Lesley Manville and Leila George impressive supporting players in the Apple TV+ series 'Disclaimer,' the show also got a fall festival run akin to what Oscar contenders receive. Should that literary adaptation from Alfonso Cuarón catch a second wind, there should be room in this category for them as well. Same goes for the other streamers, whether it is Hulu touting Imogen Faith Reid in 'Good American Family,' which is an incredibly difficult first role to pull off, or the upcoming 'The Better Sister' starring Elizabeth Banks on Amazon Prime Video. And 'The Penguin' was a huge success for HBO, with plenty members of the supporting cast to latch onto. That said, there are likely less submissions overall for the Limited Series categories this year, meaning less room for worthy performances to make the cut. Scarlett Johansson Opens ‘SNL' Season 50 Finale With Billy Joel-Inspired Musical Monologue: Watch
Scarlett Johansson kicked off the season 50 finale of Saturday Night Live with a musical monologue set to the tune of Billy Joel's 'Piano Man.' The Jurassic World Rebirth star, who hosted the May 17 episode alongside musical guest Bad Bunny, opened the iconic sketch comedy show with a heartfelt cast singalong celebrating the show's five-decade legacy. 'It's chaotic and crazy, the whole week is hazy, but there's no place I'd rather be.' The 40-year-old actress was soon joined by cast members Bowen Yang, Sarah Sherman, Heidi Gardner, Mikey Day, Ego Nwodim and Chloe Fineman, who harmonized with her. 'Sing us a song, it's your monologue, sing us a song tonight, as we made 50 years of great memories, every Saturday Night,' they all sang. Johansson then teased a surprise appearance by the Piano Man himself, saying, 'Ladies and gentleman, Billy Joel… wrote this song.' Day, visibly disappointed, responded, 'I thought Billy Joel was going to come out,' Johansson, a seventh-time SNL host, said, 'Oh, Mikey. So cute, so simple.' The monologue took a comedic turn as Fineman expressed her love for musical monologues, while Gardner noted her preference for audience questions. Kenan Thompson, pretending to be a fan in the audience, asked the Jurassic film actress to introduce him to a dinosaur, prompting Johansson to jokingly regret calling on him. New season 50 cast members Ashley Padilla, Emil Wakim and Jane Wickline made cameo appearances, singing about their gratitude for joining the iconic show — only for Johansson to hilariously forget their names. She also gave shoutouts to cast members Marcello Hernandez and Devon Walker, calling them her friends, and acknowledging Andrew Dismukes and James Austin Johnson. Toward the end of the number, Johansson dropped a surprise bombshell, singing that season 50 would be Sherman's last. 'We're all gonna miss you next year,' the cast sang in unison. A stunned Sherman replied, 'Wait, what? Did you guys hear something or…?' The joke about the comedian's departure was not mentioned again during the episode. Elsewhere in the show, Bad Bunny delivered performances of 'NUEVAYoL' and 'PERFuMITO NUEVO,' both from his sixth album, Debí Tirar Más Fotos. Watch the performances here.
