Disney's ‘Thunderbolts*' opens to US$76m in US and Canada
Thunderbolts*, the latest film in Walt Disney Co.'s Marvel Cinematic Universe of superhero titles, was the No. 1 movie this weekend, grossing $76 million in US and Canadian ticket sales in its debut. The figure compares with an estimate of as much as $90 million in sales from industry tracker Box Office Pro. Disney had forecast as much as $75 million. Thunderbolts* stars Florence Pugh and Sebastian Stan as part of a group of antiheroes trying to thwart a rogue US intelligence official played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus. The performance on opening weekend was similar to Captain America: Brave New World in February, although Thunderbolts* scored significantly better reviews from critics, which may help its long-term box office prospects. The picture cost about $180 million to produce. Outside of last year's $1.34 billion blockbuster Deadpool & Wolverine, an R-rated anomaly in the genre, superhero films have struggled to reach the heights they set six years ago when Avengers: Endgame took in a colossal $2.8 billion globally. Thunderbolts* is the second of three Marvel pictures Disney is releasing this year. The third is July's The Fantastic Four: First Steps, which opens two weeks after Warner Bros. Discovery Inc.'s Superman. Disney reports fiscal second-quarter earnings on May 7. Performance at the division that includes theatrical releases is expected to be held back by Snow White, which was mired in controversy and took in a disappointing $200.3 million at the global box office after its debut in March. –BLOOMBERG

‘Thunderbolts*' Box Office Projections Up Slightly Heading Into Weekend
Hannah John-Kamen, Lewis Pullman, Wyatt Russell, David Harbour, Florence Pugh and Sebastian Stan in ... More "Thunderbolts*." Marvel's Thunderbolts* is projected to make more than early tracking suggested but will likely fall short of the opening numbers for Captain America: Brave New World. Starring Florence Pugh, David Harbor and Sebastian Stan, Thunderbolts* is the second Marvel Cinematic Universe chapter to be released in 2025. Anthony Mackie and Harrison Ford's Captain America: Brave New World opened in February, while The Fantastic Four: First Steps will be released on July 25. Thunderbolts* plays in Thursday previews before its wide release in theaters on Friday. On April 10, The Hollywood Reporter reported that Thunderbolts* was tracking to open with anywhere from $63 million to $77 million domestically, while Box Office Pro forecasted an opening of anywhere from $65 million to $85 million. In a new box office forecast Wednesday, however, Box Office Pro adjusted its forecast to an $80 million to $90 million opening for Thunderbolts*. Deadline and Variety's opening weekend projections for Thunderbolts* are a bit more conservative, as the trade publications in reports published Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively, pegged the film to make $70 million to $75 million in its opening weekend frame. The good news for Marvel is, that at least none of the new projections are in the low to mid-$60 million range as at least two outlets projected early last month. Per Variety, Thunderbolts* had a production budget of $180 million with a $100 million marketing spend. By contrast, the MCU's Captain America: Brave New World made $88.8 million domestically in its opening weekend in mid-February and tacked on $11.5 million on Presidents' Day to bring its four-day holiday weekend tally to $100 million. Thunderbolts* is set not long after the events of Captain America: Brave New World. The official summary for Thunderbolts* reads, 'Marvel Studios assembles an unconventional team of antiheroes — Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), Red Guardian (David Harbour), Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko) and John Walker (Wyatt Russell). 'After finding themselves ensnared in a death trap set by Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), these disillusioned castoffs must embark on a dangerous mission that will force them to confront the darkest corners of their pasts. Will this dysfunctional group tear themselves apart, or find redemption and unite as something much more before it's too late?' Rated PG-13, Thunderbolts* is directed by Jake Scheier and also stars Lewis Pullman, Geraldine Viswanathan, Chris Bauer and Wendell Pierce. The review embargo for Thunderbolts* lifted Tuesday, and the film scored mostly positive reviews out of the gate. As of Thursday, Thunderbolts* has a 90% 'fresh' rating from Rotten Tomatoes critics, up 2% from the film's RT rating on Thursday. The RT Critics Consensus for the film reads, 'Assembling a ragtag band of underdogs with Florence Pugh as their magnetic standout, Thunderbolts* refreshingly returns to the tried-and-true blueprint of the MCU's best adventures.' Thunderbolts* plays in Thursday previews before opening in theaters nationwide on Friday.

Weekend Box Office Projections Favor ‘Sinners' Over ‘The Accountant 2'
Michael B. Jordan plays twins in "Sinners." Michael B. Jordan and Ryan Coogler's vampire thriller Sinners is staking out another victory at the domestic box office this weekend. Sinners pulled off an impressive opening frame last weekend with $48 million in ticket sales from 3,308 North American theaters to seize the box office crown from A Minecraft Movie. The Jack Black and Jason Momoa video game adaptation dropped to No. 2, but its third-weekend take of $40.4 million from 4,032 theaters boosted its domestic tally to $343.8 million. Two new big releases hit theaters this weekend — the Ben Affleck crime thriller The Accountant 2 and the movie adaptation of PlayStation Studio's hit video game Until Dawn — but neither film is projected to have enough power to knock Sinners from the top of the weekend box office perch. Sinners, which reunites writer-director Coogler with his frequent star Jordan, is projected by Variety to haul in $25 million to $30 million in its second weekend. Box Office Pro is forecasting a heftier second-weekend take for Sinners, however, projecting a take of anywhere from $27 million to $35 million. Deadline, though, is on the lower end of the second frame estimates for Sinners, forecasting anywhere from $19 million to $24 million. As for A Minecraft Movie, Box Office Pro is projecting a domestic tally of $20 million to $25 million for the film's fourth weekend frame, while Deadline and Variety didn't forccast any estimates for it. Jon Bernthal and Ben Affleck in "The Accountant 2." Variety projects The Accountant 2 — the sequel to 2016's The Accountant — to earn $20 million to $25 million from 3,610 venues domestically, while Deadline is projecting a $20 million-plus opening for the Ben Affleck sequel. Box Office Pro, however, sees a stronger debut for The Accountant 2 and projects a $22 million to $28 million opening frame domestically. Both Variety and Deadline are forecasting the horror thriller Until Dawn — which is opening in 3,000 North American theaters — to debut in the same vicinity. Variety projects Until Dawn to earn $8 million to $10 million Friday through Sunday, while Deadline pegs it at $8 million to $9 million. This weekend also features the 20th anniversary re-release of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, which Variety projects will make anywhere from $20 million to $22 million. Box Office Pro is projecting an $18 million to $23 million weekend for the third film in the Star Wars prequel trilogy, while Deadline noted that the film has already sold $20 million to $25 million in ticket pre-sales.

Early ‘Thunderbolts*' Tracking Forecasts Soft Opening At Box Office
Industry box office projections are on the soft side for the upcoming antihero adventure Thunderbolts* — at least in comparison to other Marvel Cinematic Universe movies. The release of Disney/Marvel's Thunderbolts* — an action-adventure featuring a group of antiheroes akin to DC's The Suicide Squad — kicks off the 2025 summer movie season on May 2. Studios and theater owners are no doubt hoping to avoid another shockingly sluggish start like the summer of 2024, when The Fall Guy fell flat in its opening weekend May 3-5 with a domestic gross of $27.7 million. Early tracking numbers for Thunderbolts*, fortunately, don't sink to those depths, but they're certainly on the lower end of what Disney is used to making from its MCU movies. As of early April, Thunderbolts* was projected by The Hollywood Reporter to earn somewhere in the neighborhood of $63 million to $77 million, with the target number falling in the middle at $70 million. Box Office Pro's tracking casts a wider net and is a lot more optimistic, projecting an opening weekend between $65 million to $85 million. Even on the high end of Box Office Pro's projections, an $85 million opening for Thunderbolts* pales in comparison to the MCU's previous summer offering Deadpool & Wolverine, which earned $211 million in its opening weekend of July 2024. What made Deadpool & Wolverine's blazing opening even more remarkable was that it was an R-rated movie that shattered the mold of its previous PG-13 offerings. Instead, a Thunderbolts* opening on the low end is comparative to the 2021 MCU chapter Eternals ($71.2 million) — but not nearly as disastrous as 2023's The Marvels ($46.1 million) — and on the high end is akin to Captain America: Brave New World's $88.8 million three-day gross ($100 million over four-day President's Day weekend) in February. In comparison to more recent early May MCU openings to kick off the summer movie season, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 earned $118.4 million from May 5-7, 2023, while Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 made $146.5 from May 5-7, 2017. In between, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness grossed $187.4 million in its opening three-day frame from May 6-8, 2022. Certainly, an opening take anywhere between $65 million to $85 million is a solid number for most films, but it's important to remember that Thunderbolts* is an MCU film, which generally have bigger production budgets. To date none of the industry's trade publications have reported the production budget for Thunderbolts*, but it wouldn't be a shock to learn the film was made anywhere in the $150 million to $200 million range before prints and advertising. The last two MCU offerings — Deadpool & Wolverine ($200 million) and Captain America: Brave New World ($180 million) — had enormous production spends before P&A, so it's reasonable to think the budget for Thunderbolts* is in the same vicinity. Tracking numbers, of course, are just that, and the executives at Disney/Marvel will find out come the weekend of May 2-4 whether they can breathe a sigh of relief if the film defies early projections like A Minecraft Movie or start sweating if they fall far short of long-range forecasts like Snow White. If there's any saving grace, Thunderbolts* will have an opportunity to gain some ground in its second weekend from May 9-11. The only major release coming out on May 9 is the indie horror comedy Clown in a Cornfield, which generated great buzz and stellar reviews (93% 'fresh' on Rotten Tomatoes) after its debut at SXSW in March. The competiton from there ramps up on May 16 with the wide releases of the horror thriller Final Destination: Bloodlines and Hurry Up Tomorrow, a psychological thriller starring Abel 'The Weeknd' Tesfaye and Jenna Ortega; and Tom Cruise is back on May 23 with Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning on May 23. Most of the characters in Thunderbolts* should be familiar to MCU fans through their introductions in previous MCU films or television series on Disney+. The official summary for Thunderbolts reads, 'Marvel Studios assembles an unconventional team of antiheroes — Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), Red Guardian (David Harbour), Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko) and John Walker (Wyatt Russell). 'After finding themselves ensnared in a death trap set by Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfuss), these disillusioned castoffs must embark on a dangerous mission that will force them to confront the darkest corners of their pasts. Will this dysfunctional group tear themselves apart, or find redemption and unite as something much more before it's too late?' Thunderbolts* is directed by Jake Scheier (Netflix's Beef) and also stars Lewis Pullman, Geraldine Viswanathan, Chris Bauer and Wendell Pierce. Rated PG-13, Thunderbolts* opens in theaters on May 2.
