Boxing: Floyd Masson wins fight against John Parker, eyes taking on David Nyika
'[He] could've easily of gotten [sic] out any lesser opponent on the night'. Masson had to stay patient in the fight and just slowly break down Parker. Masson landed significant body shots, which took a toll on Parker and eventually put him down. However, Parker wouldn't have quit on his own, so to protect his boxer, his trainer threw in the towel. Masson admitted he wanted to land a knockout-reel punch, but held on to the pressure, which he said led to his win. Now, Masson has his eyes firmly on a special Waikato bout against David Nyika. Floyd Masson (right) has taken home the IBF Pan Pacific Cruiserweight title. Photo / Combat Analytics Nyika recently had a stoppage win over another New Zealander, Nikolas Charalampous, which means, like Masson, he has great potential to rise into the IBF's top 10. With both in the top 10 of the cruiserweight division, this could lead to a world title eliminator fight. The winner would go on to fight current IBF world champion Jai Opetaia of Australia. Di Carlo said the Masson-Nyika bout was likely. 'I really think it's a must – David Nyika and Floyd Masson need to meet, to determine who is the next in line for a showdown with Jai Opetaia.' Masson reaffirmed he was keen on the fight. 'If they sent me a fight offer in the next two weeks, I would take it, I am ready to go, my body feels good, I am always keen to fight.' Masson and Nyika know each other well, being boxers who grew up together in the amateur boxing scene in Waikato. Both now live and train in Australia. The two almost faced each other in September 2024 when Nyika was scheduled to fight Blake Caparello. When Caparello failed a drug test and Nyika needed a new opponent, Masson was one of the potential replacements. However, Nyika ended up fighting American boxer Tommy Karpency. Masson previously said he would love to fight Nyika, but he would love for the fight to happen in Waikato. If that bout is unable to become reality, Masson said he was also interested in a rematch with Italian Fabio Turchi, who is currently ranked 11th by the WBO. Eddie Hearn ‘fuming' as he reveals fresh twist in Francisco Rodriguez drug-test case
Eddie Hearn has said he is 'fuming' upon learning that Francisco Rodriguez's failed drug test after beating Galal Yafai was the Mexican's second in six months. The Matchroom boss revealed he found out that Rodriguez Jr failed a drug test on the same day as his fight with Josue Jesus Morales in Texas last December. The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation has since confirmed to The Independent that Rodriguez did test positive, with the bout subsequently changed to a No Contest. Hearn told iFL TV: 'I'm fuming, I found out last night that Francisco Rodriguez Jr also failed a drug test in his fight before Galal Yafai. I went onto his BoxRec and noticed it was a No Contest in Texas. We reached out to the Texas commission, who confirmed he failed a drug test.' Rodriguez set a new flyweight record for punches landed in a fight on his way to defeating Yafai – 575 in total, over 100 more than the previous record. As Rodriguez Jr has failed drug tests in his last two fights, Hearn has urged the WBC not to order the rematch, as they are putting Yafai in a dangerous position, given he already took heavy punishment in the first fight. Hearn said: 'You've just put Galal Yafai in a position where he has fought a man with performance-enhancing drugs in his system over 12 rounds. Physically, he took a beating that night. That guy has failed tests in his last two fights. Whatever you do, do not order this rematch.' Yafai's promoter also questioned the due diligence of the sanctioning body for clearing Rodriguez in two weeks. Hearn explained: 'How do we get in a situation where, in two weeks of the news breaking about the test: he's gone through a process and they've decided it was an accident, he was unlucky, and the fight was a No Contest, the titles are vacant, but he gets to do it again?' After an investigation into his failed post-fight drug test, the WBC found that Rodriguez's 'ingestion of a banned substance was accidental, unintentional, unknowing, and not directed to enhance his performance' against Yafai. They stripped him of his interim title and ordered a rematch, as well as enrolling him in a WBC nutrition programme. Kenshiro Teraji is the current WBC champion in the flyweight division, and Hearn believes the appropriate course of action would be to make Yafai the mandatory challenger for Teraji's title. He said: 'Do what is right, which is to make Galal Yafai the mandatory challenger for the world title. This is a disgrace, that Galal Yafai has to rematch this guy.' Tyson Fury's real name and reason Soccer Aid star doesn't go by alternative
Tyson Fury, who will co-manage England at Soccer Aid, has been taunted by the likes of British rivals Dillian Whyte and Anthony Joshua, who have referred to the Gypsy King by his other name Rumours have abounded over the years that Tyson Fury isn't the boxing legend and Soccer Aid manager's real name. And those rumours have been fuelled by two of his biggest domestic rivals, Dillian Whyte and Anthony Joshua. Fury and Whyte fought at Wembley in 2022, with the Gypsy King scoring a sixth-round knockout in front of 90,000 fans to retain his world titles. The following year, Whyte took a verbal shot at Fury by claiming his name was 'Luke', not Tyson. "My real name is Dillian. I know his real name is Luke,' he told The Sun. "He changed it to Tyson to make himself sound harder. People can have a little look around on the internet and see for themselves. 'In boxing, the name Tyson is a lot more sellable than Luke. A lot of what Tyson does and says is a game, you can never take anything he says seriously or at face value. How can you trust a man who doesn't even use his own name?" On the same theme, Joshua weighed in as exhaustive talks over arranging their long-awaited grudge match continued. During a social media rant in 2021, Joshua aired his frustration by posting: 'The fight was signed! UNDISPUTED. Bare knuckle? You're a good kid, don't play with me Luke! I'll slap your bald head & you'll do nothing! Waste man." However, claims that Fury's first name isn't really Tyson are unfounded, with boxing statistics site BoxRec and Companies House both listing Fury's middle name as 'Luke' rather than his forename. According to Fury himself and his father, John, he was named after Mike Tyson, having fought for his place in the world after being born eight weeks premature. Speaking to Fight Hub TV last year on the origins of his name, Fury said: "I was born eight weeks premature and I died three times when I was a baby and I weighed in at one pound in weight. "My dad was a huge boxing fan and he was also a professional boxer, so he called me after his greatest ever fighter, Mike. He called me Tyson, it was my dad's favourite fighter. Mike Tyson's heyday was in 1988 [the year Fury was born] - very fitting that I should go on to be the heavyweight champion of the world.' After announcing his boxing retirement in January, shortly after his second defeat to Oleksandr Usyk, Fury's focus is currently on football as he prepares to joint-manage England with Wayne Rooney against the World XI at Soccer Aid on Sunday. Speaking ahead of the Old Trafford charity match, the Gypsy King said: 'I might put a bit of the old boxing side of it into the footballers, and see if we can make them a little bit tougher, a little bit fitter. 'Some of these guys are getting on a bit, whip them back into shape [with] body sparring, heavy bag drills, pad work, I can think of a lot of stuff.' The former heavyweight world champion said he was 'keen to get a victory' in the game, which raises money for children's aid charity Unicef, adding he was 'coming here to put pressure on these lads to win'.
