Boys II Planet trainee faces backlash after photos of him with his pet cat raises 'animal abuse' concerns
One after another, the trainees from the survival show Boys II Planet have found themselves caught up in controversies. From accusations of being a BTS Jungkook anti to claims of bullying, and even one for having a girlfriend - everything is being scrutinized by fans online. Now, another contestant, Jeong Sanghyeon, has landed himself in hot water, this time facing charges of 'animal abuse'. The trainee is facing intense backlash online after photos of him carrying his pet cat outside for a walk and into a local mart went viral on social media, causing an uproar. While this may seem trivial to many, K-netizens have not taken this act lightly. Did Jeong Sanghyeon 'abuse' his cat? Jeong Sanghyeon found himself at the center of backlash after a series of photos surfaced online, allegedly showing him carrying his cat in public spaces - including during walks and even inside a local mart. While the images may have appeared endearing to some, others quickly raised red flags about the potential risks and lack of proper pet safety. It is also to be noted that none of these phots show Jeong Sanghyeon's face but only a male's back holding a cat. In most countries, including South Korea, animal welfare guidelines advise against bringing cats outdoors without the right precautions. Cats are easily startled in unfamiliar settings and, without a secure carrier or a harness and leash, they can quickly bolt or become distressed. The lack of restraint in Jeong's photos led many to question whether the animal's safety was being compromised. Korean fans unhappy What began as casual photos quickly escalated into a heated debate online. Netizens on the app Theqoo criticized the trainee for what they called "reckless" and "uninformed" behavior. Some even accused him of "animal abuse," arguing that exposing a cat to crowded, noisy environments without proper protection was both irresponsible and emotionally harmful. 'Just why would you take a cat on a walk?' 'As a cat owner, this makes me so stressed out.' 'Don't raise pets so easily.' 'Cat owners are so stressed about this. Isn't it better to remove the post?' 'He's treating the cat like an accessory or doll.' At present, neither Jeong Sanghyeon nor the Boys II Planet production team has issued any statement regarding the allegations. Why is BOYS II PLANET facing rigging allegations? Know about Kim Geonwoo and Kang Woojin controversy
Boys II Planet is a South Korean reality survival show created by Mnet, aiming to debut a new eight-member boy group. The show premiered on July 17 with the star-level tests of the contestants and has been going viral for its pool of young talents. However, it has recently been marred by controversy surrounding potential vote rigging speculations. The issue involved contestants Kim Geonwoo and Kang Woojin's association with agency WAKEONE. Why did Kim Geonwoo and Kang Woojin apply to Boys II Planet individually rather than as a WAKEONE trainee? Kim Geonwoo and Kang Woojin are managed by agency WAKEONE. However, they applied as individual entities and not as part of the company's trainee lineup. WAKEONE explained that Kim Geonwoo applied to Boys II Planet prior to signing a trainee contract with them. Given that he had already prepared to participate as an individual, scheduling conflicts arose for him to join the existing WAKEONE team. After discussions, it was mutually decided that he would appear as an individual participant. Why did Kang Woojin apply to Boys II Planet individually rather than as a WAKEONE trainee? Regarding Kang Woojin, WAKEONE stated that he had a distinct musical concept, which differed from other trainees of the label. Therefore, he would be better off as an individual contestant of Boys II Planet, just like Kim Geonwoo. The decision of his solo participation was also influenced by his background as a singer-songwriter trainee, without traditional idol training experience. How did Kim Geonwoo and Kang Woojin's association with WAKEONE spark rigging allegations against Boys II Planet? The fact that the two constants didn't mention their association with WAKEONE previously and applied as solo entities, didn't sit right with the public. The issue came to light after special attention was given to Kim Geonwo's past and present, following bullying allegations against him. Moreover, Boys II Planet is produced by Mnet, a CJ ENM subsidiary and the latter also owns WAKEONE. Additionally, ZEROBASEONE, a group formed through the first season of Boys Planet, is also managed by WAKEONE. These led to speculations of Kim Geonwoo and Kang Woojin being favoured on the show through vote rigging or other means.

K-pop competition gathers together 160 global contestants competing for cross-cultural stardom
Mnet's 'Boys II Planet' to be streamed around the world via TV, streaming channels K-pop survival audition program 'Boys II Planet' is set to premiere with a unique format featuring contestants from across the world. The show will follow over 160 aspiring K-pop singers as they embark on a journey divided between two teams: 'Boys II Planet K,' composed of Korean trainees, and 'Boys II Planet C,' primarily featuring trainees from Greater China. Together, they will compete for a chance to debut as a single boy group, though specifics such as the group's final lineup, name, and contract length remain under wraps. "Boys II Planet" is the follow-up to 2023's 'Boys Planet,' the original program which drew thousands of hopefuls from 229 agencies in 84 countries, ultimately launching the K-pop boy group Zerobaseone. This season, the show takes a new approach, separating Korean and Chinese-speaking contestants, aiming to better showcase their distinct talents. 'In 'Boys Planet,' there were many global contestants, but I always felt it was a shame that the Chinese-speaking participants couldn't fully showcase the charm and potential we saw during evaluations, since the program was in Korean,' explained chief producer Kim Shin-young at a press conference in Seoul on Wednesday. 'That's why we decided to create 'C Planet' this time, with a focus on highlighting the Chinese-speaking contestants.' She added that the project aims to expand beyond these regions in the future, emphasizing the growth of the 'Boys Planet' franchise. Coach Lim Han-byul reflected on the contrasting dynamics of the two groups: 'In this season, I really feel how different Planet K and Planet C are. They share the same dream, but they grew up in completely different cultures.' He described the Korean trainees as familiar faces to frequent viewers of audition shows, while the Chinese-speaking contestants possess an unfiltered energy that challenges traditional broadcast norms. 'It'll be interesting to see how these two planets, as different as water and oil, come together and blend," said Lim. The mentorship lineup for 'Boys II Planet K' includes vocalist Lee Seok-hoon, dancer Kinky and French dancer Kany. Meanwhile, 'Boys II Planet C' features JYJ's Kim Jaejoong, Kep1er's Xiaoting and choreographer Jrick. Additionally, singers Lim Han-byul and Hyolyn, dancer Back Koo-young, and rapper Justhis will provide coaching across both teams. The show is scheduled to be broadcast and streamed globally. "Boys II Planet" will air live on Mnet and stream via the digital platform Mnet Plus, reaching audiences in Canada, Russia, Singapore, Thailand, US and Vietnam. The series will also be accessible on digital platforms, including Tving and the show's official YouTube channel. In Japan, the show will be broadcast simultaneously on Mnet Japan and the major streaming service Abema. Further international distribution is planned, with Southeast Asia — covering Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and the Philippines — as well as the Middle East, Africa, Australia, New Zealand and Taiwan expected to offer the show through platforms like Viu, Viki and iQIYI shortly after the Korean broadcast. The first episode of 'Boys II Planet' will air Thursday on Mnet at 9:20 p.m., Korean Time.
