Boston marathon raised $50M+ for charity in 2025, setting record
The 2025 Boston Marathon raised $50.4 million for charity, surpassing a single-year record set in 2024, the Boston Athletic Association announced. The total combines funds raised through 176 non-profit organizations in the Bank of America Boston Marathon Official Charity Program, as well as donations and fundraising from those who participated in the race. Since the official charity program launched in 1989, more than $600 million has been raised. The charity program makes up about 10% of the field in the marathon, with organizations recruiting athletes to raise money for their cause. Organizations participating in the charity program include the Boys and Girls Club of Boston, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and World Central Kitchen. A full list is published on the association's website. 'Every year, participants and community members raise the bar and elevate the fundraising impact for meaningful causes throughout the community,' said Nicole Juri, director of development for the BAA. 'Their uplifting effect extends well beyond the 26.2-mile racecourse of the Boston Marathon. Athletes take pride in adding meaning to every step of their marathon journey, and together set new records in 2025.' In an effort to boost the fundraising, the association held a giving day on March 20, offering incentives for donations throughout the day. Nearly $2 million — $1.87 million — was raised that day. The 2025 total shows the 'power of the Boston Marathon,' said Bank of America Marketing, Digital and Specialized Consumer Client Solutions President David Tyrie. 'Anything is possible when athletes from around the world, volunteers, local businesses, supporters and many more unite in the spirit of determination, selflessness and giving.' How would Mike Kennealy's leadership differ from Healey's?
Governor Healey and former economic secretary Mike Kennealy are both running for the state's highest government position in 2026, and they have very different ideas of how to lead the Bay State. Mike Kennealy worked as a private equity manager, the economic secretary under former Governor Charlie Baker, and most recently as the Boys and Girls Club of Boston's chief strategy officer. While he says he is resisting labels, his campaign confirmed that he will be running as a Republican. He says the state is moving in the wrong direction, especially in terms of affordability. 'The political class on Beacon Hill is more concerned with their future than with ours. Our beacon on a hill has become a beacon in the rearview mirror,' said Kennealy in his campaign launch video. Kennealy has also expressed frustration and disagreement with the Healey administration's handling of energy prices, housing, and the migrant crisis. He says he supports a secure federal border, signaling approval of the Trump administration's border control, and looks to reform right-to-shelter laws. When Governor Healey announced her plans to run for reelection, she said her administration has 'a heck of a lot more to do,' and she pointed to her record as proof that she's the right person for the job. There are several other potential Republican gubernatorial candidates, including Worcester Sheriff Lew Evangelidis, former MBTA leader Brian Shortsleeve, former U.S. Senate candidate John Deaton, and potentially western Massachusetts senator Peter Durant. Mike Kennealy, former cabinet secretary under Charlie Baker, launches bid for MA governor
Mike Kennealy, former Massachusetts secretary of housing and economic development, announced Monday that he is launching a bid for governor, becoming the first Republican candidate to officially challenge Gov. Maura Healey in the 2026 race. Kennealy, a Lexington resident, served in former Gov. Charlie Baker's cabinet from 2018 to 2023. Before that, he worked in the administration as assistant secretary for business growth. He said in a campaign video released Monday that Massachusetts is "headed in the wrong direction," citing a high cost of living, a "broken" transportation system and the "human tragedy" of the migrant system. Kennealy worked in the private equity industry for nearly two decades before beginning a career in public service, first as a special advisor for the turnaround of Lawrence Public Schools amid its state receivership in 2013. In 2015, he joined Baker's administration as assistant secretary for business growth. He was named secretary of housing and economic development in 2018, a role he held until the end of Baker's tenure in 2023. For the last two years, Kennealy has been a senior advisor and chief strategy officer at the Boys and Girls Club of Boston. According to his website bio, Kennealy grew up in Medford and Reading before earning degrees from Dartmouth College and Harvard Business School. He and his wife Trisha have three adult children. Healey said she will run for reelection in 2026 during a February appearance on GBH's "Boston Public Radio" show. 'I plan to run for reelection because there's a lot more to do,' she said at the time. 'I love my job. I feel incredibly privileged to be in this position, and I'd love to have the opportunity to continue to work for the great people of this state.' In addition, Andrea James, a criminal justice advocate, filed candidacy paperwork for the governor's race with the Office of Campaign and Political Finance in February. However, she hasn't officially launched a campaign so far. The election is set to take place on Nov. 3, 2026.
