Invasive tree species in full bloom in Shawnee County
TOPEKA (KSNT) – Callery Pear Trees, better known as Bradford Pear Trees are in full bloom. But what do you need to know about this invasive plant? These trees continue to spread every year. Although many people think it is a beautiful tree, experts say they come with a lot of problems. Washburn University celebrates 3rd Spanish Immersion Day 'It can be an aggressive invader and take over land that we want to be saved as range land or even crop land,' Abigail Gettinger, K-State Research and Extension Office Shawnee County, said. There will be an educational program in Rossville on Wednesday, April 9, 2025 to learn more about this invasive tree and the quarantine that will take place in 2027. For more local news, click here. Spring brings invasive species of tree, program helps remove them
GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) — Thursday is the first day of Spring and although it's beautiful, it can be smelly. The smell is because of Bradford Pear Trees, the white trees that some people said smell like fish. They're an invasive species and experts say they're bad for the environment. 'They multiply very quickly. They grow very rapidly. They're a weak wooded tree, so they break easily. Any time we have winds or ice or other types of extreme weather events. So generally not a tree that we recommend people plant intentionally,' said Matthew Stevens, County Extension Director for Pitt County Cooperative Extension. There is a Bradford Pear Bounty Program where you can cut your pear tree down and receive a replacement tree to help rid of this invasive species, click here for more information.
