Jho Low believed to be hiding out in China

Jho Low FB SINGAPORE: Rumours are circulating that Malaysian businessman Jho Low, a fugitive who was involved in the 1MDB scandal, is currently hiding out in China. The American reporters who broke the 1MDB story, Tom Wright and Bradley Hope, uploaded a video on YouTube last Friday (July 18) and claimed that Low is currently residing in Green Hill, an upscale residential estate in Shanghai. The reporters added that Low may be using a forged Australian passport to conceal his identity. The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs has since confirmed that investigators are assessing the allegations that Low could be holding a fake Australian passport. A spokesperson for the department added that those found guilty could face a maximum penalty of ten years in prison, a fine, or both. Malaysia is also expected to investigate the latest allegations. Prior to the release of Friday's video, Bernama had quoted Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim as saying that the country has not received any information about Low's whereabouts. No info on Jho Low being in Shanghai, says PM

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said the government has yet to receive any information about Low Taek Jho being in Shanghai, China, and holding a fake Australian passport. (Johnshen Lee pic) GEORGE TOWN : Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said today he has no information on a claim that fugitive financier Low Taek Jho, or Jho Low, is living in Shanghai, China. He said the home ministry would need to check on the claim about Low's whereabouts. 'I have no information. We haven't received any information on this,' he said briefly to reporters after the groundbreaking ceremony of Kompleks Madani at Teluk Kumbar. Late yesterday, investigative journalists Bradley Hope and Tom Wright said Low, the alleged mastermind in the 1MDB scandal, is believed to be residing in a high-end neighbourhood in Shanghai and holding a fake Australian passport. In a YouTube livestream, they said they had gathered evidence from various sources and newly uncovered documents which showed that Low is living in a mansion in Green Hills, an 'ultra high-end neighbourhood' in Shanghai. They said Low was using a fake Australian passport with the Greek name Constantinos Achilles Veis to hide his identity. Hope and Wright also claimed that Low was now working as a 'behind-the-scenes strategist for the Chinese government'. His role allegedly includes helping sanctioned companies from China 'navigate difficulties around the world'. The duo are former Wall Street Journal journalists who broke many of the key early 1MDB stories and co-wrote the book 'Billion Dollar Whale' about the scandal. Low, who has been charged in Malaysia and the US over allegations that he orchestrated the theft of US$4.5 billion from 1MDB, was previously said to be in Macau, although Beijing has denied protecting the fugitive financier.

Jho Low resurfaces? 1MDB fugitive allegedly living in Shanghai under Greek alias, fake Australian passport (VIDEO)

KUALA LUMPUR, July 19 — Fugitive Malaysian financier Low Taek Jho, better known as Jho Low, has supposedly been located in a luxury neighbourhood in Shanghai, China, where he is said to be living under a false identity and working with entities linked to the Chinese government. Former Wall Street Journal reporters Bradley Hope and Tom Wright — who broke key details of the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) corruption scandal and co-authored Billion Dollar Whale — claimed that Low is now residing in Green Hills, an exclusive enclave in Shanghai. The duo made the claims during a live stream titled Finding Jho Low, hosted yesterday by their investigative platform, Project Brazen. They alleged that Low is using the alias Constantinos Achilles Veis and carrying a fake Australian passport, which allows him to travel within China while concealing his identity. 'Jho Low is now a behind-the-scenes strategist for the Chinese government,' Hope said. They added that Low's alleged responsibilities include 'helping sanctioned Chinese companies navigate difficulties around the world.' Low is the alleged mastermind behind the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) scandal, in which at least US$4.5 billion (approximately RM19 billion) was misappropriated from the Malaysian sovereign wealth fund. The US Department of Justice has previously stated that the stolen funds were used to acquire luxury real estate in the US, a private jet, a superyacht, high-value artworks, and to finance the 2013 film The Wolf of Wall Street. Hollywood actor Leonardo DiCaprio, who starred in the film, publicly thanked Low by name during his 2014 Golden Globe Awards acceptance speech. In 2016, US authorities moved to seize assets linked to the film's production, alleging it was funded with embezzled Malaysian money. Low has been on the run since 2015, after international investigations into 1MDB intensified. His whereabouts have remained unknown since, with occasional speculation but no confirmed sightings. Hope and Wright's latest claims represent the most detailed account of Low's location and activities in years. However, there has been no official confirmation from Chinese or Malaysian authorities at the time of writing.
