On today's Days of Our Lives recap: University Hospital – Lobby: Steve and Kayla discuss how well John's recovery is going. Steve thinks it's his fault John is in this situation. Kayla stops him saying there was nothing which would stop John from saving Bo. Kayla tells Steve she wants Bo to wake up but is worried there will be complications. Steve only wishes they could have gotten him the drug sooner. Kayla hopes they can be there when he inevitably wakes up. University Hospital – John's Room: Marlena tells John she could stay next to him like this forever. She pulls out a coin which reminded her of when they tossed coins in a fountain. Belle had a dream he had a coin in the palm of his hand which has become a symbol that they were not going to lose him. Flashback: Marlena in a hospital bed with John and she finds a coin in his hand. In real-time, Marlena places the coin in the palm of John's hand and he says, 'I'm still here.' Marlena remembers a time when John thought she had died. John says he was lost and notes his life began when he met her. Marlena says the day she stole his heart is the day her life began (Poor Roman…). Marlena looks at John's file and recalls his many identities, including when she thought he was Stefano. Flashback: Marlena calls Bo and tells him that Victor Kiriakis is trying to kill her and John… except she thought he was Stefano DiMera. In real-time, Marlena says John is the kindest, most gentle man she has ever known. He will always be the great love of her life. Hospital: Hope tells Ciara Alice and Shawn Douglas she is not leaving Bo until he opens his eyes. Hope tells her children how she has been talking to Bo everyday for two years and would love him to wake up so he would tell her to shut up. Shawn D said he constantly reads to his father which reminds them how he read to them when they were children. Flashback: Bo tells little Shawn Douglas a story. In real-time, Bo begins to move, and Shawn Douglas runs to get a doctor. The doctor checks on Bo and says it appears his conditions are unchanged. That being said, she encourages them to continue to talk to Bo as it can only do him good. Hope leans in and tells Bo she knows he is trying to tell them something. Shawn D and Ciara think maybe Bo is dreaming. Hope says Bo has always done things his own way – a rebel. Ciara and Shawn D rib each other about how their own rebellious streaks. Hope wonders, had he lived, if Zack would have followed suit. Comatose Land: Bo finds his way back into the Brady Pub and sees Zack behind the counter. He wonders what Zack is doing there and then realizes he doesn't know where he actually is. They establish they aren't in Salem and Bo says it reminds him of a dream he had once where they were together with Hope in a place bathed in white. Bo wants to hug him but Zack says he can't because he doesn't want him to get so attached. He isn't supposed to be there. Hospital: Bo's heart rate begins to increase and Hope believes he's being impacted by the family stories. Flashback: Bo and Hope's extensive love story. In real-time, Hope says their life has been every bit the adventure he promised her. Comatose Land: Zack says Bo's place is with his family. Bo thinks Zack needs him to as he never had the chance to watch him grow up (When he called Zack 'tiny man' I almost lost it). Zack says he has been surrounded by family and notes Grandpa Shawn and Grandma Caroline say hello. Bo wants to stay but Zack says he has to make a decision soon. He says he will be waiting for him there when it is his time to go. Bo wonders if it is his time when suddenly he sees Hope, Shawn Douglas and Ciara Alice beckoning him home. Hospital: Shawn Douglas returns saying he has spoken to Claire and told her the drug is working. Hope leans into Bo and tells him to think about their lives together because it cannot end this way. They have so many more memories to make together. Flashback: Bo and Hope's extensive love story (That shot of Shawn Douglas' birth is iconic). In real-time, Hope grabs Bo's hand and says she thinks the trip down memory lane might be upsetting him. Shawn Douglas notes not all the memories are pleasant, including losing Zack. He thinks it would be important to his father to remember Zack. Comatose Land: Shawn Douglas tells Bo he's been napping for the better part of a decade. Bo worries about leaving Zack and then finds him on the other side of the bar, embracing his family. Hope reminds Bo he has a choice to make. Bo thinks maybe it's time to realize he's where he belongs. Hope says it's his responsibility to fight his way back to them. In real-time, Bo's vital signs begin to go haywire. John thinks they need to bring Bo on board, but Steve says they should wait until they are up and running. John thinks they should call their firm, 'Black Patch.' In real-time, Steve says John has been laying on the hero stuff kind of thick, lately. Kayla thinks they will soon need to erect a John Black statue in Horton Square (I wonder if we will be getting a John Black statue). Marlena is cool with that as long as he is still around to be with his family. Flashback: John introduces Belle to her big brother, Brady. In real-time, Marlena is in tears and says she knows his family has always been his priority. Marlena worries if she gets John home, he won't be entirely safe. She recalls being a bit too aggressive with him the night of their first wedding. Flashback: John and Marlena's first wedding (with THAT dress!). In real-time, John's machines begin to go haywire, and he says he can't breathe. Kayla runs to grab a specialist to help get John's breathing under control. As he has trouble breathing, Marlena lies beside John and breathes with him (Steve and Kayla in the background are killing me). A desperate Marlena asks Kayla if there's anything they can do. Kayla says John's lungs are so damaged. She's not asking her to give up hope but wants her to know they could be running out of time. Kayla thinks maybe they should call a priest. Kayla returns having called the priest. Marlena has collected herself a bit and asks for some time alone with her beloved. Before they leave, Kayla thanks John for everything and a distraught Steve can barely speak before he exits. Marlena tells John how much she loves him, and he says, 'I love you, Doc.' She tells John how brave he has been but knows he is weary and suffering. Marlena says, 'if you need to go, it's ok.' She tells John she and the children will survive on the love he has given them and will always have him in their memories. Marlena tells John it's ok for him to rest now. Endings Steve breaks down as Kayla tells him John's body is shutting down and it's just a matter of time. She embraces him and they weep together. Marlena cuddles next to John on the hospital bed as she thinks back to moment from their love story. John's voice narrates the memories saying he promises to love her until the day he dies. On today's Days of Our Lives recap: Marlena and John's Penthouse: Marlena is lying in her bedroom thinking back to the horrid moment when John died. A distraught Belle walks into the living room and asks Brady if they have coffee and wants to check on their dad. Brady stops her and says their father died. Belle doesn't understand. She thought he was doing better as Marlena sent them home. She's distraught because they could've been there to say goodbye. Brady says everything happened quickly and she would have called had there been time. Just then, Marlena enters and embraces her daughter. Brady returns with coffee and says Tate is still asleep. Marlena tells him to let the boy sleep as he just got over the flu. Belle notes Carrie, Eric and Paul are at the Salem Inn. Marlena stops them from calling so they can have some time before they have to hear the horrible news. Just then, Abe and Paulina arrive as they just heard the news. Paulina embraces her friend and says how sorry she is. Brady Pub: Kayla arrives and tells Roman that John is gone. She says John was rebounding when everything tanked. Kayla wishes there was something she could have done. Roman asks about Steve and Kayla says he's making calls. Kayla asks about his feelings and Roman says he's in shock. He knows they were once rivals but loves him for raising his children in his absence. Kayla agrees and says he was and always will be apart of the Brady family. Hope calls and tells Kayla about Bo's miraculous recovery. She is thrilled for them and hands the phone back to Roman. He promises to come see Bo very soon and they hang up. They are both thrilled by Bo's recovery but are still distressed by John's sacrifice. Neither can imagine what Hope will think when they learn about John's death. Paulina and Abe's Condo: The phone rings waking Paulina and Abe up. Abe answers the call from Steve and learns John died. After he hangs up, he tells Paulina the news. Horton House: Julie answers a call from Hope who tells her Bo is awake! She is thrilled and declares his recovery a miracle. Julie notes none of this would have happened if not for John Black's heroism. They agree to talk later and Julie goes to Doug's photo and tells him the amazing news. DiMera Mansion – Living Room: EJ and Kristen congregate. He says he has been working on his plans for the hospital. Kristen hopes he has also been working on getting her mother home. EJ promises to keep his word as long as Mama Blake doesn't testify against him and Rachel doesn't implicate Johnny in his shooting. Kristen insists they have a deal as long as he holds up his end of the bargain. Just then, Kristen hears Rachel scream and runs to see about her daughter. DiMera Mansion – Rachel's Room: Rachel tells Kristen she had a nightmare her Grandpa John died. Kristen says she doesn't have to worry about her Grandpa as her daddy said he was feeling much better. She says they can go that afternoon to the hospital to pay him a visit. With that, Kristen tries to get her daughter to go back to sleep for a while longer. As Rachel sleeps, Kristen texts Brady and says they need to talk about Rachel. He texts back to say he is on the way. With that, Kristen makes her exit. Brady arrives and Kristen says they need to talk about Rachel. She sees something is wrong and he tells her about John. Kristen doesn't understand and Brady says it was very sudden. EJ enters as Kristen says John is gone. He quickly exits and goes to see Belle. Kristen is in tears when she says how sorry she is to Brady and says how important his father was to everyone, including her. She can't imagine what he's going through and knows how hard it must be to accept John being gone. She admits to her complicated history with John but says she respected him and the world will be a lesser place without him. Kristen is mortified she stopped Rachel from seeing her grandpa the day before. Brady says he gave John her card before he passed. Kristen tells Brady about the nightmare Rachel had about her grandfather's death. Marlena and John's Penthouse: Brady tells the group he needs to go deal with an issue about Rachel. He embraces Marlena and says he will return as soon as possible. Abe and Paulina ask if there's anything they can do but Marlena is too distraught for words. They promise they are there to support her in whatever way the can. Belle brings Marlena tea and sees Abe and Paulina have gone. Marlena says they went to get her some pastries. Just then, Julie arrives with lemon bars not knowing the news. Marlena breaks down and says John is gone. Julie embraces Marlena and says how sorry she is and begs her to let her be of support. Abe and Paulina return with all kinds of pastries so at least folks will have something to eat. Julie takes everything to the kitchen as everyone stands around trying to figure out what to do. Abe asks Marlena if she's given any thought to John's funeral. She becomes agitated and says of course she hasn't. Abe assures her that he and Paulina will help her handle the arrangements. Just then, EJ arrives to pay his respects, but Marlena has no patience. Belle walks in and Marlena shoots her a look that says get him the hell out of here. With that, Belle takes EJ by the hand and leads him off. Julie returns to find Marlena alone and breaking down. Before they can speak, yet another knock is heard at the door which reveals Roman and Kayla. She thanks them both for coming and delivers the good news about Bo. They say what a hero John is for saving their brother's life. Marlena breaks down in tears as she says how happy they must all be. Kayla says she's calling Cat to cancel all her appointments for the day. Marlena says no as her patients need her. Kayla says she will be there for them when she's ready but needs to take this time to heal. Marlena has no clue what she would do with herself. Kayla says the person she needs to take care of is herself. Kayla has John's thinks from the hospital and Marlena wants to see them now, despite Julie's pleas. She takes the bag and opens it and asks if it's everything. Marlena says she gave John a gold coin at the hospital which is now missing. Paulina and Abe's Condo: Paulina talks about a book she read about when bad things happen to good people. She notes how people support each other during bad times is when and where you find God. Abe agrees and says they will be there for Marlena. He says John was one of his best friends. He hopes John knew how much he loved him. With that, Paulina pulls Abe into her arms. Horton Square: EJ wants to help comfort Belle by feeding her but she isn't up for seeing other people. He asks why she got them out of there so quickly and Belle reminds him that her mother was quite close to physically pushing him out. She can't imagine what he was thinking by coming over so early even before most of the family heard the news of her father's passing. EJ says he couldn't stay away as he needed to be there to support her. EJ strokes Belle's cheek as tears run down her face. She says her father only wanted her to make the right choices in life. Belle thinks John wouldn't think their relationship is the right thing to do and wants to honor him. Endings Marlena sits alone in her bedroom and looks at a picture of a past Christmas with John. She flashes back momentarily before putting the picture down, hugging herself and breaking down. Marlena looks at her phone and sees a voicemail from John. She says she has to save it as she knows he left it when he was coming home. She presses play and hears the love of her life say, 'I love you, Doc.'
