A division bench of justice S M Subramaniam and justice A D Maria Clete was hearing a public interest litigation filed by an advocate, 'Elephant' G Rajendran of Chennai. The petitioner stated that although Bramotsavam is conducted in all the temples in the state, it was not conducted in the Ramanathaswamy temple for the past 10 years. Bramotsavam is a 10-day festival conducted in the Tamil month of Aani, commencing with the flag hoisting ceremony.
He stated that the temple authorities planned to conduct Bramotsavam this year for three days, from June 3 to 5. Such religious practices cannot be altered by the authorities. Hence, the petitioner moved court.
During the course of hearing, the counsel for the executive officer of Ramanathaswamy temple submitted that since the Bramotsavam already commenced on June 3, the authorities would take a decision by following the customary practice regarding its conduct in the ensuing years.
