'I deal with pressure by just enjoying myself'
Brandon Robinson-Thompson has said his way of dealing with the pressure of professional golf is by "simply enjoying" himself. The Isle of Wight player is on the DP World Tour and recently finished third in the Qatar Masters. After the four rounds he had a score of 13 under par and weeks before he finished joint eighth on 12 under at the Bahrain Championship. "Everyone has their own way of dealing with the pressures and staying composed," Robinson-Thompson told BBC Sport."I have always found a safe haven or refuge in simply enjoying myself. I really understand what a privilege it is to play golf for a living - there are a million and one things that I could be doing but I'm living out my dream."I get annoyed at times just as much as anyone, but I just have a really clear understanding that things happen and I have an acceptance of the good, bad and ugly."Robinson-Thompson graduated from the HotelPlanner Tour in 2024 to earn his DP World Tour card in is his first season competing on the tour and he has already impressed, setting a course record at the Bahrain Championship with an 11-under-par 61. Humble beginnings and helping others Robinson-Thompson won £41,000 at the Bahrain Championship and £126,000 for his third-place finish at the Qatar Masters - the size of the rewards not being lost on the Englishman. "I come from very humble beginnings," Robinson-Thompson added. "I grew up in a single-parent home and council housing. Money has never been something that I've previously had access to and therefore has never been something I've really wanted."It's never been a driving factor for me - I've always wanted to do something that I love to do and through my grandparents and especially my grandad I found golf."I'm not naive to the fact that it helps though and you make money when you perform. I think what I get excited by is that in the future I can help and change the lives of the people around me."The 31-year-old featured in the US Open over the summer in what was his second major. He is hoping that more success on the DP World Tour could lead to further opportunities on an even higher stage."The top goal for me this year would be to gain a PGA Tour card through the DP World Tour," Robinson-Thompson said."That would mean finishing in the top 10. I also just want to maintain the current enjoyment level that I have with the game."I know if I can continue to enjoy competing then I'll be in a really great place with getting closer to all my goals."

Golfer Brandon Robinson-Thompson set a course record of 61 and took an early three-shot lead in the first round of the Bahrain Championships. From the Isle of Wight, Robinson-Thompson is competing in his first season of the DP World Tour and was delighted with his start in Bahrain. "I didn't picture this outcome this morning when it was raining and there was a forecast of strong winds," Robinson-Thompson told the DP World Tour. "I was very happy to get off to the start that I did, it was an accumulation of a lot of good decision-making, execution, and I made a lot of puts. "It wasn't perfect but I was smart when I had to be, there is a little bit of a sour taste in my mouth because of the end but I hold my fair share." The 32-year-old came within touching distance of breaking a tour record set by Oliver Fisher, who became the first player on the European Tour to shoot a round of 59, at the 2018 Portugal Masters. Through the first 17 holes, Robinson-Thompson recorded eight birdies and two eagles to put himself on 56 stokes and in need of a birdie to match the record going into the final hole. The Briton then bogeyed the 18th hole, ending the round frustratingly despite a career-best score. "This has to be my first or second-best round ever, surely," he added. "It is my lowest round as a professional I'm pretty sure. I'm going to do a lot of the same stuff going forward. "I'm working with a new caddy at the moment and he's great, we get along well and talk through everything. We'll be having a lot of fun. I'm looking forward to it."
