Former Hawkeye football legend Brandon Scherff elected to Iowa Athletics Hall of Fame

Former Hawkeye football legend Brandon Scherff elected to Iowa Athletics Hall of Fame The list of Iowa Hawkeyes legends that dominated inside Kinnick Stadium and across the Big Ten continues to grow as another former star joins a list of his peers being immortalized. Former Iowa Hawkeyes offensive lineman Brandon Scherff has been elected to the Iowa Hawkeyes Class of 2025 Hall of Fame. The Iowa guard spent 2010-2014 with the Hawkeyes, and in that time, he left a huge impact on the Iowa football program. Brandon Scherff was the Big Ten Offensive Lineman of the Year in 2014, a two-time First-Team All-Big Ten selection in 2013 and 2014, the Outland Trophy winner in 2024, which goes to college football's best offensive lineman, and a Unanimous All-American in 2014. Following his time at Iowa, Brandon Scherff went on to be selected No. 5 overall in the 2015 NFL draft by Washington, where he spent 2015-2021. Following that, Scherff signed a three-year deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars for $49.5 million. A model of longevity in the NFL, Scherff has appeared and started in 140 games over 10 years. Bengals urged to fill last major need in free agency with big name

Bengals urged to fill last major need in free agency with big name The Cincinnati Bengals feel like a team clearing cap space for additional moves this summer around training camp, at least based on the latest contract restructure. Whether the Bengals really end up making a move to reinforce struggling positions remains to be seen, though -- and the team wasn't exactly hurting for cap space before players took pay cuts. Either way, Pro Football Focus' Mason Cameron is someone who wants to see the Bengals go out and grab Brandon Scherff in free agency to boost the offensive line in front of Joe Burrow: "Signing Brandon Scherff would amplify the unit, as his 78.0 PFF pass-blocking grade over the past two seasons ranks in the 94th percentile." RELATED: Bengals' Trey Hendrickson, Germaine Pratt standoffs updated As the writeup addresses one last move every AFC team should make, it's only natural for the Bengals section to focus on the offensive line. The team bringing back Cody Ford, signing Lucas Patrick and drafting Dylan Fairchild doesn't exactly inspire confidence when they entered the offseason needing two new starters at the guard spots. Still, one could also write that the Bengals need to upgrade in the defensive secondary with a free-agent name like Justin Simmons, too. When it comes to Scherff, there's speculation about whether he wants to keep playing, plus the argument the Bengals don't really like players on the market over the age of 30(and Scherff is 33). But he'd be a starter and upgrade, so it certainly makes sense from that angle. RELATED: Bengals' Geno Stone gets brutally honest about his contract restructure

3 free-agent guards Seahawks should target after missing out on Dillon Radunz

3 free-agent guards Seahawks should target after missing out on Dillon Radunz The Seattle Seahawks have shown interest in free-agent guards. General manager John Schneider has decided against signing any of them. On Monday, Dillon Radunz, who had visited the Seahawks, signed with the New Orleans Saints instead. Other potential targets like Teven Jenkins (Cleveland Browns) and Lucas Patrick (Cincinnati Bengals) also signed elsewhere. Interestingly enough, the free-agent market is still flush with potential upgrades at guard for the Seahawks. Will Schneider pivot and show interest now that his initial targets are all off the market? We've identified three available talents in particular. Brandon Scherff Brandon Scherff is a veteran guard who played for the Jacksonville Jaguars last season. The aging Scherff is no longer the five-time Pro Bowler he once was, but he's still a steady contributor. He played more than 1,000 snaps in 2024, earning a grade of 74.5 from Pro Football Focus in pass protection. Will Hernandez The Seahawks have signed a ton of talent from within their NFC West division this year, including Cooper Kupp and Eric Saubert. How about Will Hernandez, a guard who played for the Arizona Cardinals in 2024? Hernandez was legitimately good, allowing zero sacks, whistled for just two penalties. Dalton Risner Dalton Risner was a late addition to the Minnesota Vikings last season. He blocked for new Seahawks starting quarterback Sam Darnold. That familiarity should make him a potential target. Risner also didn't allow any sacks in protection, and forfeited just 16 pressures in more than 530 total snaps.

Jaguars 2025 free agency predictions: Does G Brandon Scherff return?

Over the coming weeks with the NFL's free agency period on the horizon, I will be taking a closer look at each of the Jacksonville Jaguars' pending free agents and predicting whether or not each player will return or sign elsewhere. Up next is guard Brandon Scherff, but if you missed any of our other previews up to this point, you can find them below: Mac Jones Luke Farrell D'Ernest Johnson Scherff has been a reliable presence in the Jaguars' offense the last three seasons, starting all 51 regular season games during that span. As the Jaguars' right guard, Scherff has been particularly good in pass protection, which includes this past season not giving up a single sack and ranking fourth among his position group in PFF's pass-blocking efficiency metric. In run-blocking grade, however, Scherff ranked 57th. As new head coach Liam Coen said, the Jaguars have to get better along the offensive line. In one respect, having a proven veteran presence like Scherff to lean on and provide some stability as Jacksonville attempts to reshape this unit does have some value. However, the sense I get from Coen's comments is that through free agency and/or the draft, the Jaguars are going to heavily address the offensive line and that may mean going in a different direction at guard and younger as well, with Scherff 33-years-old. 'I think we would all agree that it needs to improve,' said Coen. 'I think that when you look at, first and foremost, the offensive side of the ball, you want that unit and that group–it's the first thing that when you break the huddle the defense sees. I want that to mean something. We want that to mean something and it will. 'That's a mentality, that's personnel, that's scheme, that's technique, that's fundamentals, and that's attitude. That's something that we need to make sure we instill.' Another part of the equation with Scherff is because of a contract restructure last offseason and the use of void years, even if he's playing elsewhere in 2024, he leaves behind a dead cap hit of $14 million, according to Over the Cap. To avoid that much dead cap in one season, the Jaguars and Scherff can agree to an extension by February 17th, which would allow them to push some of those cap charges to future season. But for a Jaguars team that is in the midst of a transition, the new general manager may prefer to just eat all that dead cap this year and then have Scherff's contract off the books completely in 2026. And if the Jaguars re-sign Scherff after the February 17th deadline, they take on the $14 million dead cap hit plus whatever his cap hit would be on the new deal–and that doesn't seem like a prudent salary cap maneuver either. So you add all of that together, and I think Scherff ends up playing elsewhere in 2025. Prediction: Brandon Scherff signs with another team.

Important date approaches for Jaguars and Brandon Scherff

February 17th is an important date for the Jacksonville Jaguars and Brandon Scherff. On that day, Scherff, who is currently set to be a free agent this offseason, will have his contract void. At that point, the Jaguars will have to take on $14 million in dead cap for the 2025 season, according to Over the Cap. Dead cap are dollars that will remain on the current year's salary cap even if that player is playing elsewhere. The reason that Scherff has so much dead cap is because of the contract restructure that was completed last offseason and utilized four void years. Void years are essentially fake years added to a contract for salary cap purposes. Those added years are not a contract extension, but rather they allow teams a longer runway to spread salary cap charges out. The benefit in the now is that it lowers a player's current cap hit. The downside, however, is that when the contract terminates down the road, all of those cap charges that were pushed to the void years accelerate and come due on the salary cap books. To avoid this, the Jaguars and Scherff can agree to an extension before February 17th, which would allow the team to then spread those cap charges out over the life of the deal, rather than taking it all on this year. Once that February 17th date passes, if a new deal hasn't been reached, the Jaguars are still able to re-sign Scherff. However, at that point, in addition to taking on the cap hit from the new deal, that aforementioned dead cap hit of $14 million is still on the books as well. So if an extension isn't reach soon, then it probably becomes more likely that Scherff won't be returning. Given that the Jaguars' offensive line play has to improve, there is value in bringing back Scherff and his experience. However, there's also a financial motivation for the Jaguars to bring him back as well. This article originally appeared on Jaguars Wire: Important date approaches for Jaguars and Brandon Scherff
