SK Telecom's brand value nosedives after mass data breach: report
SK Telecom relinquishes the telecommunications crown to rival KT The brand value of SK Telecom, the largest mobile carrier in Korea, is believed to have dipped sharply in the second quarter of this year in the wake of a massive hacking attack that was made public in April. The local brand value assessment firm Brandstock on Monday revealed the top 100 brands in the country, in which SK Telecom relinquished its top spot in the telecommunications sector to rival KT Corp. KT's score on the index jumped from 852.6 to 872.9 compared to the previous quarter, moving it up to the 27th overall spot from 41st in the first quarter. SK Telecom's score plummeted from 890.1 in the first quarter to 850.1, placing it second among mobile carriers and 40th overall. It ranked a few spots above LG UPlus, which came third among the telecom companies. SK Telecom said last month that it had lost about 400,000 users since the mass data breach that led to the theft of 9.82 gigabytes of sensitive SIM-related data affecting as many as 26.95 million users, according to a join government-civic investigation announced last month. The a still-unidentified group of hackers is thought to have commenced the cyberattack in June 2022. The unprecedented scale of the data breach has led to user complaints and a subsequent loss of subscribers. But last week's report indicated that SK Telecom has started to regain some of its customers since June 24. In terms of overall rankings of local brands, Samsung Electronics' flagship smartphone brand Galaxy and the mobile messenger application KakaoTalk each maintained their No. 1 and No. 2 spots, with KB Kookmin Bank taking the No. 3 spot, rising a notch. YouTube, the previous No. 3 on the list, fell to No. 4. Apple's iPhone, the biggest rival of the Galaxy lineup, moved up four spots to No. 5, narrowing the gap with its Korean rival.

SK Telecom drops sharply in brand value in Q2 after USIM hacking
SK Telecom Co., South Korea's largest mobile carrier, lost its top spot in local brand value rankings following a data breach that affected its entire 25 million user base, a local brand valuation firm said Monday. SK Telecom earned 850.1 points on the BrandStock Top Index for the second quarter, dropping sharply to 40th place from 11th in the previous quarter, when it ranked the highest among local mobile carriers with 890.1 points, according to Brandstock. In contrast, rival KT Corp. rose to become the highest-valued telecom brand, climbing to 27th place with 872.9 points in the second quarter, up from 41st place three months earlier. LG Uplus Corp. came in 46th, narrowing the gap with former telecom leader SK Telecom. The brand reshuffling came after SK Telecom suffered a data breach in April, in which sensitive universal subscriber identity module data was potentially leaked during an unidentified cyberattack on the company's servers. "Brand value has recently become more volatile, as it is increasingly influenced by various external issues," Brandstock said. Meanwhile, Samsung Electronics Co.'s Galaxy smartphone brand retained the No. 1 spot on the BSTI, followed by the messaging app KakaoTalk and KB Kookmin Bank. (Yonhap)

Coway claims 2025 triple crown in brand rankings
Coway, a leading South Korean appliance company, announced Thursday that it ranked high in key brand evaluations for 2025, demonstrating strong market trust. In Brandstock's "Korea's Top 100 Brands' for the first quarter this year, Coway ranked 32nd, climbing three spots from the previous quarter. The rankings are based on the evaluation company's Brand Stock Top Index, which consults over 1,000 brands across 230 industries through consumer surveys and market data. Coway also dominated the 2025 Korea Brand Star Awards, securing the No. 1 position in the water purifier category for the 20th consecutive year, and in air purifiers and bidets for the 21st consecutive year — earning it a prestigious triple crown in Brandstock's value certification program. In addition, Coway placed first in the 2025 Korea Brand Power Index for the 27th straight year in water purifiers — the longest-standing record in Korea's home appliance sector. It also earned top honors for a 23rd consecutive year in both the air purifier and bidet categories. These results reflect Coway's continued investment in innovative product lines such as the Icon and Noble water purifiers, the premium LooLoo Double Care Bidet 2, and the Berex smart sleep care line. The company recorded a 14.1 percent on-year increase in domestic rental sales in 2024, reaching 1.71 million units. A Coway spokesperson said, 'These rankings demonstrate our customers' lasting trust. We will continue delivering innovative, health-conscious solutions that enhance daily life.'
