Barbour Co. Prevention Works Pathways helps area youth

PHILIPPI, – The Bright Futures Barbour County Youth Prevention Coalition met Thursday at the Epicenter in the Chestnut Ridge community of Moatsville to mark the commencement of the Prevention Works Pathways Youth Employment Program. The program is a 10-week initiative designed to empower young people through practical work experience and skill development. As part of the Bright Futures Barbour County Youth Prevention Coalition, the program has assembled a team consisting of five job coaches, 21 youth participants aged 15–18 and a program director, along with 12 business partners. Senator Capito visits Braxton County Middle School for 'West Virginia Girls Rise Up' event 'Our goal is just to help people make a step into the world of work and responsibility. We all know that the sooner you learn how to show up for work and work well, life is better,' director of New Vision, Ruston Seaman said. All of the current youth participants in the program were born during the height of the opioid crisis, which drug prevention experts stated has had a huge effect on Barbour County, both directly and indirectly. Senator Capito visits Braxton County Middle School for ‘West Virginia Girls Rise Up' event

SUTTON, (WBOY) — Senator Shelley Moore Capito visited Braxton County Middle School Thursday as part of her 'West Virginia Girls Rise Up' initiative where she gave a pep talk to the school's sixth-grade girls with the goal of encouraging them to think about their future, have confidence, and set big goals. 12 News spoke with student Emily Short, who said she wanted to someday go to school to become a therapist. Short said that she appreciated the senator's visit and that it reminded the students at the school that 'they can do whatever they want if they put their mind to it.' Capito talks broadband, ambulances during visit to eastern panhandle Senator Capito wanted to remind the students that public service is also an option for them and that can help bring about change in their communities. In her talk, Senator Capito brought up the disparity between the number of male and female senators in Washington. Capito is West Virginia's first female senator. 'I just want to see West Virginia girls be the next leaders and that's what this program is all about,' Capito said. Braxton County's State Delegate Lori Dittman, who is also a teacher at Braxton County Middle School, stopped by on Wednesday to give some words of encouragement. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
