Carlo Ancelotti's Brazil exit from Real Madrid under FIFA investigation
By the time Carlo Ancelotti left Real Madrid, he had already been announced as the new Brazil manager. With the Italian's time up, and both Ancelotti and Real Madrid planning for the future in late April, a rather unusual situation occurred. Despite the radio silence from the club and the denials of Ancelotti, the Italian coach was in talks with Brazil over becoming their manager and Los Blancos had contacted Xabi Alonso about taking over. At the time Brazil were on the charm offensive, and intermediary Diego Fernandes was a consistent presence at the Santiago Bernabeu. FIFA open investigation into Diego Fernandes commission Fernandes, a Brazilian businessman who is close to the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF), but without an official role, was staying in Madrid in an attempt to broker a deal between Ancelotti and Brazil. When the deal was done, Fernandes was pictured with Ancelotti, and transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano cited him as 'taking care of talks'. As explained by Sport, FIFA have opened an investigation into the negotiation, and have demanded that the CBF explain the €1.2m commission paid to Fernandes. The Catalan daily explain that he was contracted by the CBF, and his name features in Ancelotti's contract. Fernandes is not a registered agent The crux of the issue is that Fernandes is not a registered FIFA agent, and thus was not permitted to approach Ancelotti on Brazil's behalf. Sport quote information from UOL Esporte, who say that FIFA have demanded explanations from the CBF by the 4th of June, the day before Ancelotti's Brazil debut against Ecuador. Image via Juanjo Martín / Diario AS Ancelotti set for baptism of fire with Brazil On the pitch, Ancelotti is facing a tricky start. They will play away in Quito against Ecuador, and then host Paraguay the following week. The former occupy second spot in the South American qualifying table, and have lost just twice. Meanwhile Paraguay are a spot behind Brazil, and level on points. They have not lost under current manager Gustavo Alfaro, beating Argentina in November. Ancelotti has just a year to get Brazil in shape to challenge for the World Cup next summer.

Ancelotti to leave Real Madrid for Brazil job
RIO DE JANEIRO - Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti will leave the club at the end of the season to take charge of the Brazil national team, the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) announced Monday. The 65-year-old Italian will become Brazil's first foreign coach since 1965, with Xabi Alonso set to be appointed as the new Real Madrid boss after confirming his exit from Bayer Leverkusen last week. "The greatest national team in the history of football will now be led by the most successful coach in the world," said the CBF in a statement. "He will lead Brazil until the 2026 World Cup and will coach them in their next two qualifying matches against Ecuador and Paraguay next month." Ancelotti will be the fourth non-Brazilian to coach Brazil. The last was Argentine Filpo Nunez who was in charge for one game 60 years ago. Brazil sacked Dorival Junior after a 4-1 thrashing by Argentina in March and are fourth in the South American qualifying table for the tournament in the United States, Mexico and Canada. "Bringing Carlo Ancelotti to lead Brazil is more than a strategic move - it's a statement to the world that we are determined to regain the top spot on the podium," said CBF president Ednaldo Rodrigues. "He's the greatest coach in history and now he's in charge of the greatest team on the planet. "Together, we will write glorious new chapters for Brazilian football." Record five-time World Cup winners Brazil last won the trophy in 2002, enduring more than two decades of disappointment since then. Rodrigues had tried to lure Ancelotti to Brazil two years ago after Tite stood down as coach following a quarter-final exit at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. That bid fell apart in December 2023 when Ancelotti extended his contract with Madrid, forcing Brazil to turn to Dorival after the team struggled under Fernando Diniz in his brief spell at the helm. Eighteen months on from Dorival's appointment, Ancelotti leaves Madrid with a year left on his contract as one of the club's most successful managers, winning 15 trophies across two spells with Los Blancos, including a La Liga and Champions League double last season. In his first spell at Real Madrid he led them to La Decima in 2014 - their 10th Champions League triumph. He has won the competition three times with Los Blancos. After being sacked in 2015 he returned six years later when Zinedine Zidane resigned to lift the trophy again in 2022 and 2024. Ancelotti has also led Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich among other teams, including AC Milan with whom he won the Champions League twice as a coach in 2003 and 2007. The Italian is the coach who has won the European Cup most often, triumphing on five occasions - two more than Zidane, Pep Guardiola and Bob Paisley. GLITTERING CAREER At Real Madrid, Ancelotti has coached Brazil stars Vinicius Junior, Rodrygo Goes and Eder Militao, as well as teenage talent Endrick. The coach will leave Madrid on May 25 after the club's final La Liga match of the season, against Real Sociedad. Madrid are set to finish the season empty-handed after losing the Clasico at Barcelona on Sunday to fall seven points behind their league leading arch-rivals. Ancelotti will oversee Madrid's home game against Mallorca on Wednesday and the trip to Sevilla on May 18, departing before the Club World Cup this summer in the US. The coach has won league titles in the five major European leagues, in Spain, England, Italy, Germany and France across a 30-year managerial career. Spanish media reported Monday that Leverkusen coach Alonso is set to take over at Real Madrid on June 1, ahead of the Club World Cup. Madrid's first match is against Saudi side Al Hilal in Miami on 18 June.

Ancelotti pledges to make struggling Brazil 'champions again'
Former Real Madrid manager Ancelotti is the first non-Brazilian in six decades to coach the record five-time World Cup winners. 27 May 2025 09:34am Brazil's football team new head coach, Italian Carlo Ancelotti (L) receives the team's jersey from the president of the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) Samir Xaud during his official presentation at a hotel in Barra da Tijuca neighbourhood, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on May 26, 2025. (Photo by Mauro PIMENTEL / AFP) "I'm very proud to lead the best team in the world. I have a big job ahead of me and have great hope that Brazil will become champions again," he said during his official presentation at a hotel in Rio de Janeiro. "The only goal is to win the 2026 World Cup," he said after receiving a green-and-yellow coach's jacket from Luiz Felipe Scolari, the manager who took Brazil to its last World Cup win in 2002. At 65, the Italian star manager, who has five Champions League titles under his belt, is taking the reins of a national team for the first time. Expectations are high in football-mad Brazil that he can revive the squad's fortunes. To that end, he announced the return of Manchester United midfielder and former Brazil captain Casemiro for June's qualifiers against Ecuador and Paraguay, alongside Real Madrid star Vinicius Jr and Barcelona winger Raphinha. Formidable task Ancelotti is Brazil's fourth coach in two years, and he faces a formidable task. "Brazil was sort of decaying and needed that little light at the end of the tunnel. I think he is that light," said Jose Geraldo Da Silva, a 65-year-old retiree, who was waiting outside the Rio hotel to try catch a glimpse of the new trainer. Brazil has struggled for form in 2026 World Cup qualifying and sacked Dorival Junior in March after a humiliating 4-1 thrashing by regional arch-rivals Argentina. Ancelotti will cut his teeth on June 5 against Ecuador in Guayaquil and then on the 10th will host Paraguay in Sao Paulo. (Photo by Mauro PIMENTEL / AFP) While ruling out Neymar for the fixtures, Ancelotti said that "obviously we're counting on him" for the future. In his last game for Brazil in October 2023, which ended in a 2-0 defeat to Uruguay, Neymar suffered a serious knee injury and has not worn his country's colors since then. Casemiro, 33, who has also not been called up since October 2023, did receive the nod to return, by contrast. Speaking in Spanish peppered with a few words of Portuguese, which he promised to quickly learn, Ancelotti said Casemiro would bring "charisma, personality and talent." New wunderkind Estevao, 18, who is set to join Chelsea from Sao Paulo's Palmeiras, was also called up. But injured Real Madrid forwards Rodrygo and Endrick did not make the list. Turbulence Brazil is currently languishing in fourth place in the South American qualifying table for next year's tournament in the United States, Mexico and Canada. The national football federation (CBF) spent two years wooing Ancelotti to try turn the page on years of disappointment for the national side and its fans. The Selecao have only made it as far as the World Cup semi-final once out of the last five tournaments -- in 2014 against Germany, who gave the World Cup hosts an historic 7-1 thrashing on home soil. Ancelotti's arrival also coincides with a period of turbulence for the CBF itself. On Sunday, it elected a new president, Samir Xaud, after the previous boss, Ednaldo Rodrigues was dismissed by a court over suspicions of forgery in his employment contract. "May Christ the Redeemer (Rio's landmark monument) bless the arrival of our Mr Carlo Ancelotti, so that he can secure... a highly coveted sixth world title," Xaud said by way of welcome to Ancelotti, to whom he vowed "total autonomy." Ancelotti's new role comes with a pay package of around 10 million euros ($11.4 million) a year, according to local media. - AFP More Like This Newly appointed Real Madrid's coach Xabi Alonso gives a press conference during his official presentation at Real Madrid Sports City in Valdebebas, near Madrid, on May 26, 2025. Real Madrid announced in a statement on May 25, 2025, that Xabi Alonso has been appointed the new coach of Real Madrid with the 43-year-old Spaniard to take over from June 1, and lead the team at the Club World Cup. Carlo Ancelotti on a mission to make Brazil champions again
"I'm honoured and proud to lead the best team in the world. I have a big job ahead of me," the 65-year-old Italian told a press conference at the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) headquarters. "I'm delighted, the challenge is great. I've always had a special connection with this team... We're going to work to make Brazil champions again," he added. Ancelotti, who was welcomed by former Brazil coach Luiz Felipe Scolari, took over from Dorival Junior, who was sacked at the end of March following a 4–1 defeat by Argentina, a humiliating loss that was the latest in a series of poor results. Brazil sit in fourth place in the South American World Cup qualifiers, with the top six teams earning direct qualification.
