Ancelotti to leave Real Madrid for Brazil job
RIO DE JANEIRO - Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti will leave the club at the end of the season to take charge of the Brazil national team, the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) announced Monday.
The 65-year-old Italian will become Brazil's first foreign coach since 1965, with Xabi Alonso set to be appointed as the new Real Madrid boss after confirming his exit from Bayer Leverkusen last week.
"The greatest national team in the history of football will now be led by the most successful coach in the world," said the CBF in a statement.
"He will lead Brazil until the 2026 World Cup and will coach them in their next two qualifying matches against Ecuador and Paraguay next month."
Ancelotti will be the fourth non-Brazilian to coach Brazil. The last was Argentine Filpo Nunez who was in charge for one game 60 years ago.
Brazil sacked Dorival Junior after a 4-1 thrashing by Argentina in March and are fourth in the South American qualifying table for the tournament in the United States, Mexico and Canada.
"Bringing Carlo Ancelotti to lead Brazil is more than a strategic move - it's a statement to the world that we are determined to regain the top spot on the podium," said CBF president Ednaldo Rodrigues.
"He's the greatest coach in history and now he's in charge of the greatest team on the planet.
"Together, we will write glorious new chapters for Brazilian football."
Record five-time World Cup winners Brazil last won the trophy in 2002, enduring more than two decades of disappointment since then.
Rodrigues had tried to lure Ancelotti to Brazil two years ago after Tite stood down as coach following a quarter-final exit at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
That bid fell apart in December 2023 when Ancelotti extended his contract with Madrid, forcing Brazil to turn to Dorival after the team struggled under Fernando Diniz in his brief spell at the helm.
Eighteen months on from Dorival's appointment, Ancelotti leaves Madrid with a year left on his contract as one of the club's most successful managers, winning 15 trophies across two spells with Los Blancos, including a La Liga and Champions League double last season.
In his first spell at Real Madrid he led them to La Decima in 2014 - their 10th Champions League triumph.
He has won the competition three times with Los Blancos. After being sacked in 2015 he returned six years later when Zinedine Zidane resigned to lift the trophy again in 2022 and 2024.
Ancelotti has also led Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich among other teams, including AC Milan with whom he won the Champions League twice as a coach in 2003 and 2007.
The Italian is the coach who has won the European Cup most often, triumphing on five occasions - two more than Zidane, Pep Guardiola and Bob Paisley.
GLITTERING CAREER
At Real Madrid, Ancelotti has coached Brazil stars Vinicius Junior, Rodrygo Goes and Eder Militao, as well as teenage talent Endrick.
The coach will leave Madrid on May 25 after the club's final La Liga match of the season, against Real Sociedad.
Madrid are set to finish the season empty-handed after losing the Clasico at Barcelona on Sunday to fall seven points behind their league leading arch-rivals.
Ancelotti will oversee Madrid's home game against Mallorca on Wednesday and the trip to Sevilla on May 18, departing before the Club World Cup this summer in the US.
The coach has won league titles in the five major European leagues, in Spain, England, Italy, Germany and France across a 30-year managerial career.
Spanish media reported Monday that Leverkusen coach Alonso is set to take over at Real Madrid on June 1, ahead of the Club World Cup.
Madrid's first match is against Saudi side Al Hilal in Miami on 18 June.

Desire Doue scored twice to inspire Paris St Germain to their first European Cup triumph with an emphatic 5-0 win over Inter Milan in a totally one-sided Champions League final on Saturday. After losing the final to Bayern Munich in 2020, Luis Enrique's PSG side, who teetered on the brink of elimination in the league phase this season, finally claimed the trophy their big-spending Qatari owners have craved. The 19-year-old Doue was on target again in the 63rd minute, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia scored 10 minutes later and substitute Senny Mayulu netted three minutes from time to seal the biggest winning margin in a Champions League final. Inter defenders appealed for offside but Federico Dimarco played the PSG man onside and the youngster kept his cool to roll the ball across goal and hand Hakimi the simplest of tap-ins. The second came eight minutes later from a quick PSG counter which found Ousmane Dembele on the left wing. Dembele drove forward before floating the ball to the far side and Doue had time to control the ball on his chest and his shot took a deflection off Dimarco to beat the wrong-footed Yann Sommer. Dembele's defence-splitting pass from his own half sent Kvaratskhelia haring away before beating Sommer at his near post, a goal which brought the PSG bench, including Luis Enrqiue, onto the pitch as they knew this game was all over.

Achraf Hakimi, playing against his former club, gave PSG an early lead and Doue went from provider to finisher as his deflected shot doubled their advantage in the 20th minute. Doue scored again just after the hour mark, ending any doubt about the outcome before Khvicha Kvaratskhelia ran away to get the fourth and substitute Senny Mayulu made it five. Inter were simply no match for the French club, who recorded the biggest victory by any team in the final in the 70-year history of the European Cup and Champions League. The triumph for the Parisians comes after more than a decade of huge investment from their Qatari owners, and five years after they lost to Bayern Munich in their only previous final appearance. Already French league and cup double winners, they are remarkably just the second ever French winners of European football's biggest prize –- Marseille were the first in 1993, when they beat AC Milan in a final also played in Munich. It is also a second Champions League for PSG coach Luis Enrique, who won with Lionel Messi's Barcelona a decade ago. This youthful PSG side is the best the competition has seen since, one that has been intelligently pieced together over the last two years and fully unleashed this season following the departure of Kylian Mbappe. It was also the earliest goal in a Champions League final since 2019, and recent history was already firmly against Inter. The last final in which both teams scored was in 2018, while the last team to concede the first goal but still win were Real Madrid in 2014. But soon Inter were further behind with a goal that came on a counterattack. Willian Pacho prevented Inter from winning a corner, his clearance falling to Kvaratskhelia, who released Ousmane Dembele. His pass found Doue, and the youngster who was preferred in the starting line-up to Bradley Barcola fired past Yann Sommer, via a deflection off Federico Dimarco. Inter only really came close to scoring in the first half when Marcus Thuram headed just wide at a corner, but things got worse after the break. The night for Inzaghi's side was summed up by defender Yann Bisseck, who came on for Benjamin Pavard early in the second half but limped off less than 10 minutes later. Their back line was at sixes and sevens as PSG made it 3-0 on 63 minutes, Dembele's flick releasing Vitinha before the little Portuguese playmaker set up Doue to beat Sommer at his near post. Doue came off shortly after to rapturous applause, but his teammates were far from done. Dembele sent Kvaratskhelia away to to make it 4-0 in the 73rd minute, and the 19-year-old Mayulu then played a one-two with Barcola before lashing in the fifth on 86 minutes. He soon showed his ruthless side though to break serve with a backhand winner as he raced into a two-set lead. The sixth seed was in no mood for a late night as exploding fireworks and roars rang out from across the road and the third set followed the same pattern as the first two as he cruised through to a last-16 clash against Britain's Cameron Norrie.
