Kate Martin Earns New Nickname From Golden State Valkyries on Monday
Kate Martin Earns New Nickname From Golden State Valkyries on Monday originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Kate Martin and the Golden State Valkyries have been one of the most surprising teams in the league to begin the 2025 WNBA season, securing a 7-6 record through their first 13 games. Advertisement On Sunday, the Valkyries defeated the Connecticut Sun 87–63, securing their second straight win and fifth victory in their last six games. While numerous Golden State players found success against the Sun, Martin was not one of them. The former Iowa Hawkeyes guard tallied one point on 0-of-8 shooting, four rebounds and two assists in 17 minutes of action. Despite her recent struggle, Martin appears to be enjoying her first season in the Bay Area. On Monday, she posted numerous photos of herself and her teammates on Instagram. "Just having fun with it!" Martin captioned her post. Kate 'Money' Martin's nickname has become well-known among WNBA fans since she joined the league in 2024. However, the Valkyries decided it was time for their guard to have a new nickname and commented on Martin's post. Advertisement "Golden Kate💜," the Valkyries replied. Other Valkyries players left their comments on Martin's post, too. "this is really nice Kate. I give it a 10/10 🙂↕️," wrote guard Bree Hall. "There she is🔥🔥," added Aerial Powers. Golden State Valkyries guard Kate MartinDarren Yamashita-Imagn Images Martin was selected in the second round of the 2024 WNBA Draft, spending her rookie season with the Las Vegas Aces. After her lone season with Becky Hammon's squad, Martin was selected in December's expansion draft, joining Golden State for its inaugural season. Martin has found success with her new team despite her recent performance. Through 12 games, she is averaging 5.5 points, 2.8 rebounds and 0.7 assists in 16.1 minutes per contest. Valkyries sign 2025 Fever draft pick
The post Valkyries sign 2025 Fever draft pick appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Golden State Valkyries have reportedly agreed to a contract with guard Bree Hall, per Kendra Andrews of ESPN. 'The Valkyries have announced they've signed Bree Hall, the 20th pick in this year's draft who spent the preseason with Indiana,' Andrews wrote on X, formerly Twitter. Advertisement As mentioned, Hall was selected by the Indiana Fever with the No. 20 overall pick in the 2025 WNBA Draft. She played her college basketball at South Carolina, spending four years with the program. Hall averaged 5.8 points and 2.3 rebounds per outing at South Carolina. The Fever ultimately selected her in the draft but ended up waiving her in May. Now, Hall is receiving another opportunity in the WNBA. She could make her debut in a regular season game soon after signing with the Valkyries. Overall, Golden State holds a 5-6 record. The Valkyries were most recently defeated by the Dallas Wings, losing by a final score of 80-71 on Tuesday night. Still, has been a strong debut for the Valkyries, as Golden State is in its first WNBA season as the league's 13th overall team. Expansion teams are often near or at the bottom of the league during their first couple of seasons. It typically requires time to build a true contender. Yet, Golden State is near the middle of the WNBA as far as standings are concerned. This Valkyries team could realistically reach the playoffs in their first WNBA campaign. Advertisement It is only June, of course, so there is plenty of work still to be done. Golden State's outlook is promising, though. Bree Hall will do everything she can to positively impact the team moving forward. Following their loss to the Wings, the Valkyries will try to bounce back on Thursday night against Hall's former team, the Fever. Tip-off is scheduled for 10 PM EST in San Francisco. Dawn Staley hypes up ex-South Carolina player's 2nd chance with Valkyries
The post Dawn Staley hypes up ex-South Carolina player's 2nd chance with Valkyries appeared first on ClutchPoints. With injuries and Eurobasket absences racking up around the WNBA, players who narrowly missed making a roster are getting another deserved chance to shine. Bree Hall is one of the latest to benefit after being offered a contract to join the Golden State Valkyries. After news broke of the Valkyries' signing, Hall's South Carolina women's basketball head coach Dawn Staley took to X, formerly Twitter, to express her support for the ex-Gamecocks member. Advertisement 'Let's get it [Hall]!' the legendary head coach's post said. 'I love this for you!!!' Staley then brought in another former Gamecocks athlete she coached who also happened to end up on the Valkyries last-minute, Laeticia Amihere. '[Amihere] take care of your [Gamecocks] sister!!!' she concluded with three heart eye emojis. Staley is no stranger to using her social media to support the players who come through her program. Just the day before, she shouted out Dream rookie Te-Hina Paopao as she put up career numbers against the Liberty. Staley also repped Las Vegas Aces and ex-Gamecocks star A'ja Wilson by throwing a themed 'A'One Day' at South Carolina's basketball camp a week before in honor of the WNBA MVP's first signature shoe line. Hall was a member of Staley's South Carolina women's basketball squad for four years, averaging 5.8 points and 2.3 rebounds per game with the Gamecocks. After suffering a disappointing March Madness loss to fellow rookie Paige Bueckers and UConn, Hall was chosen No. 20 overall by the Indiana Fever in the 2025 WNBA Draft. The Fever unfortunately waived Hall in May during the final rounds of roster cuts before the season started. Advertisement After losing to the Wings earlier in the week, the Valkyries will try to bounce back on June 19 when they go against Hall's short-lived former Fever team at 10 p.m. ET. Valkyries' Move Before Fever Game Fuels Speculation
Valkyries' Move Before Fever Game Fuels Speculation originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Indiana Fever are headed to the Bay Area to take on the Golden State Valkyries in their first ever WNBA matchup on Thursday. Advertisement Before the matchup with Caitlin Clark and the Fever, the Valkyries raised some eyebrows by signing guard Bree Hall to help replace their six players at EuroBasket 2025. Hall will be available to play against Indiana on Thursday, the team that chose her with the No. 20 overall pick in this year's draft out of South Carolina. She attended training camp with the Fever but did not make the final roster. Despite the immediate possibility of a revenge game, Fever fans found a silver lining in the Valkyries' decision to sign Hall. Former Indiana Fever guard Aari McDonald (2) and Golden State Valkyries coach Natalie Nakase (right).Grace Smith/IndyStar / USA TODAY NETWORK; Kirby Lee-Imagn Images Golden State became the latest team to pass up on free agent guard Aari McDonald, who recently impressed with the Fever while Clark missed five games with a quad injury. Advertisement However, she had to be released as soon as Clark and Sophie Cunningham returned from injury and restored Indiana to the 10-player minimum. McDonald immediately became a free agent, allowed to sign with any team besides the Fever before completing a 10-day waiver period. With the Valkyries filling out their roster, the Los Angeles Sparks signing Grace Berger to a hardship contract and no moves from the Chicago Sky — who need a point guard after Courtney Vandersloot's season-ending injury — fans are starting to think McDonald is holding out for a Fever return. "Yeah Aari is definitely ours no way you sign Bree Hall before her," said a Fever fan on X. Advertisement "Aari is ours.. there's no way they signing Bree ahead of her," echoed another. "Aari welcome back in a couple days," wrote one user. "Another day passes by and Aari McDonald has stayed SOLID," said a hopeful fan on Wednesday. "4 more to go." McDonald, 26, averaged 11.0 points, 3.0 assists and 2.0 steals in 25.3 minutes while helping the Fever to a 2-1 record in the three games she played. The initial 10-day waiting period is not the only obstacle to Indiana getting her back. Assuming there is not another injury crisis, they would have to free up one more roster spot by releasing or trading a player in order to sign McDonald. Advertisement It would not be an easy decision, but it is one the Fever could only make if another team does not snap up McDonald first. After the Valkyries' latest move, that looks more likely.
