Steelers Place Veteran Defensive Lineman on Injured Reserve
The Pittsburgh Steelers have officially signed defensive tackle Breiden Fehoko and placed defensive tackle Dean Lowry on the injured reserve list, the team announced on Saturday. Fehoko will wear No. 79 with the Steelers. Lowry is in his second season with the Steelers after joining the club as a free agent in 2024. He appeared in 12 games last year and made one start, recording five tackles, one quarterback hit and one pass defended The Steelers are dealing with a rash of injuries at the defensive tackle position, with Lowry, Jacob Slade and Esezi Otomewo all suffering knee injuries during Wednesday's practice. In addition to Fehoko, the Steelers signed former Minnesota defensive tackle Kyler Baugh as the corresponding transaction for Slade's release. Lowry spent his first seven seasons with the Green Bay Packers, who drafted him out of Northwestern in the 2016 NFL Draft. Lowry became a starter in his second season with the Packers in 2017 and maintained at least a co-starting role in Green Bay through 2022. He had his most impactful season in 2021, when he recorded five sacks in addition to 42 tackles and five tackles for loss. He also had four passes defended and a fumble recovery. The Minnesota Vikings signed Lowry to a two-year deal last March. He played nine games for Minnesota before suffering a pectoral injury on Nov. 19 that ended his season. He was released on March 12. The Steelers signed him to a two-year contract on April 1, 2024 to help offset the loss of Armon Watts from their 2023 defensive line. Watts signed with the New England Patriots as a free agent. Slade, 25, is in his second season with the Steelers. He first joined the club on a future contract in January 2024. He spent all of the 2024 season on the Steelers practice squad, without appearing in a game, and was re-signed for 2025 this offseason. A Michigan State alum, Slade originally signed with the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and spent his entire first pro season on their practice squad. He was drafted by the Pittsburgh Maulers of the USFL, but never played for the team.
