Coughlin and Wheeler move forward in the race for the mayor of Bremerton after primary
Jeff Coughlin and Greg Wheeler will meet on the ballot for Bremerton mayor during the fall general election after Tuesday's primary decided the two candidates to advance. Preliminary results from the Kitsap County Auditor's Office showed that Wheeler led at 51.71%, receiving 2,317 votes of the 4,481 total, with Coughlin next after drawing 33.63%, or 1,507 votes. "We have worked hard over the last seven years, and our community recognizes that. I've run a positive campaign focused on meeting and talking with constituents, and I look forward to continuing that and reaching even more voters before November," Wheeler said. Coughlin, a current city councilmember and former NASA scientist, said that he and his team were "thrilled" with the results: "I think tonight we saw that -- especially as all the votes are carried over the next few days -- I think we'll see that the majority of Bremerton is ready for some positive change." Marwan Cameron, former OC instructor and non-profit director, will not advance. Cameron, who ran unsuccessfully for city council in 2023, finished with 14.66%, or 657 votes. "Tonight is about the people of the city. It'd be great to come in second or first, but the big thing was to bring attention to the issues, and we've definitely done that, and we're going to continue to do so," Cameron said Tuesday night. "We'll see what happens in four years." The overall turnout across Kitsap County, where there were just six contested local primary races, the Kitsap Regional Library levy lid lift, and a primary for state Senate 26th District, was about 28.9%, according to the auditor's office. More than 58,000 ballots were received as of Tuesday, and updated totals will be reported on Wednesday, Kitsap County Auditor Paul Andrews said. Michael Simonds was second, with 39.5% (331), and will also advance to November's general election. Candidate Ash Black finished third, with 15%, or 126 votes. The district is currently represented by Jeff Coughlin, who advanced in the primary for mayor on Tuesday. Three other council positions will appear on the November ballot, though two drew only the incumbent. Councilmember Jennifer Chamberlin, District 1, is running unopposed, as is Councilmember Michael Goodnow, for District 5. Council District 7 will be represented by a new name, with candidates Rick Tift, currently a Bremerton Planning Commission member, facing Matthew Baptiste-Cerra. Bainbridge Island City Council In the one island council district contested in the primary, for the District 3 South Ward, Mike Nelson led the three candidates with 40 percent of the total, or 739 votes. He was followed by former city councilmember Sarah Blossom, with 34.4% (635) votes. Those two will advance to November's general election. Dawn Janow, a commissioner with the Bainbridge Island Metro Parks board, finished third, with 25.6% (472). Island voters will decide three city council positions in November. In addition to the District 3 position, the District 5 Central Ward drew incumbent Clarence Moriwaki and challenge Peter Raffa, and the District 7 North Ward will pit incumbent Joe Deets against Lara Lent. 26th District Senate A state legislative seat was on the primary ballot for voters in Kitsap and Pierce counties, though the only two candidates listed were already planning to advance to November's general election. State law requires a partisan race to have a primary even if there are not three candidates. For the 26th District, which spans parts of Bremerton, South Kitsap and Pierce County through Gig Harbor, Republican Michelle Caldier, currently the 26th District House rep, led incumbent Sen. Deb Krishnadasan, by less than 100 votes. Caldier drew 50.04%, or 14,659, according to the Washington Secretary of State. Krishnadasan, who was appointed to fill the seat when Emily Randall was elected to Congress, finished Tuesday's initial returns with 49.74%, or 14,570. There were also 63 write-in votes. School board races narrowed in Bremerton, North Kitsap after primary
Ben Anderson, Shannon Turner and Debra Strawhun emerged as top vote-getters in local school board races following initial primary vote totals released by the Kitsap County Auditor's office Tuesday. Anderson, the incumbent for the Bremerton School Board No. 5 position, collected 2,225 votes (42.6%) and leads over Linda Osborn Simpson (1,645 votes, 31.5%)) and Mary Devery (1,355, 25.9%). Anderson was appointed to the board in February following the resignation of Carolynn Perkins. In the race for Bremerton's No. 4 position, featuring three would-be board newcomers, Turner leads with 2,084 votes (40.1%), followed by Jenny Farley (1,814 votes, 34.9%) and Chris Warthen (1,298 votes, 25%). Position 4 incumbent Alyson Rotter opted not to run for re-election. In North Kitsap, Strawhun and Thomas move on Three names of newcomers appeared on the ballot for the North Kitsap School Board District 1 position with incumbent Edward Wright not running for re-election. Strawhun collected 3,160 votes (40%) and leads Leighton Thomas (2,724 votes, 34.5%) and Seth Hartmann (2,010 votes, 25.5%). Hartmann actually dropped out of the school board race in July, citing personal reasons, but it was too late to remove his name from the primary ballot. In each director race, the two candidates who receive the most votes in next month's primary will advance to the general election in November. Watch as monster truck wheel goes airborne, bounces away mid-stunt
Things got a little chaotic and dangerous when a rogue wheel momentarily became the star of a monster truck show. The monster truck "The Veteran," much to the dismay of the crowd, lost a wheel after landing a jump in the last section of a Malicious Monster Truck Tour show, which is a three-day event at Thunderbird Stadium in Bremerton, Washington, on July 20. The Veteran's wheel broke off, bouncing its way across the venue, over a wall, and into the neighboring parking lot, where event attendees parked their vehicles. Footage captured by an attendee shows both the moment leading up to the tire mishap and the moment right after, when the front left wheel of The Veteran, painted red, white and blue, went airborne and bounced its way over the stadium's east wall and into the neighboring parking lot. According to reporting by the Kitsap Sun, part of the USA TODAY Network, the wheel came to a full stop after hitting two vehicles — one of which was completely crushed — and a tree. "There were no injuries," Bill Payne, co-owner and operator of event host Straight Up Racing, told the Kitsap Sun. "But the Kia is probably not going to live." Straight Up Racing, a Port Orchard-based monster truck team, has held the event at the stadium, located inside the Kitsap County Fairgrounds, for five years. 'If we can afford it, then we're going to just do it out of pocket," Payne said. "If it's something that is unreasonable, then we'll turn it into our insurance and hope for the best that we can continue having these events." Watch the moment monster truck 'The Veteran' loses its wheel Michael Groth, who decided to leave the show a little early, was making his way across the parking lot with his son when he heard a loud noise. "We heard a loud pop, and we turned around, and this huge tire was bouncing over the wall, then over a fence and smashed a car," Groth told the Sun. "We were there five or so seconds before." As soon as the coast was clear, Groth went to check if anyone had been inside the vehicle. "It was pretty scary, we got going pretty quick after," Groth told the Sun. Monster truck team releases statement after tire mishap The Port Orchard-based monster truck team formally addressed the tire incident on social media, writing that they wanted to get in front of the situation so fans could hear about what happened from them, not "any uninformed or sensationalized source on TV or online." "Motorsports are unpredictable," Straight Up Racing said in a statement. "The truck involved was running industry-standard wheel restraints. Fact is, there is no piece of metal in existence that will always stand up to the forces involved in monster truck competition." The group said they "quickly" made contact with both the Kitsap County Fair Board and a fencing company to "collaborate on a plan of action to help reduce the risk of similar incidents in the future." "Accidents happen, even unprecedented incidents such as this & we will always do everything we can to help further the safety of this great sport we all love," the statement reads. "Our backflip ramp Camera captured the most dramatic angle of the incident. We wanted to prove we are hiding from nothing & want to be as transparent & open about it as possible." Video shows monster truck wheel fly off mid-performance, damaging multiple cars
A fan's video captured the moment a monster truck's massive tire flew off during a performance in Washington state. The incident occurred at the Malicious Monster Truck Tour, a three-day event at Thunderbird Stadium in Bremerton, Washington. Video shows a huge tire fly off a red, white and blue truck with "Veteran" emblazoned on its side as the vehicle jumped over a ridge. The tire bounced and rolled, eventually flying into the stadium's parking lot at the end of the track. No one was injured in the incident, but multiple parked cars were damaged, event organizers said. One car was directly hit by the tire and was crushed, local media reported. A second vehicle sustained damage as well. Event organizers said on social media that the truck involved was using "industry-standard wheel restraints." Monster truck tires can weigh between 800 and 900 pounds each, according to Popular Mechanics. "Fact is, there is no piece of metal in existence that will always stand up to the forces involved in monster truck competition," the organizers said in a statement. They said they contacted local officials and a fencing company to "collaborate on a plan of action to help reduce the risk of similar incidents in the future." Tyler Trinchini, who operates the Instagram page Monster Trucks Washington and shared video of the moment, told CBS News he has been to "plenty of monster truck shows" and had "never seen anything like this happen before." "Luckily, my car was not the one that was damaged," Trinchini said. "I'm just very thankful that no one was injured."
