‘Jesus carried me': How faith helped Brenda Mtambo survive her darkest year
Musician Brenda Mtambo has marked one year since losing her grandmother on 19 May 2024, a time she describes as a life-altering period. In her emotional social media post, Mtambo attributes her ability to navigate the challenging year to divine intervention. Beyond personal grief, Mtambo expressed gratitude that she's 'still standing' despite the turmoil. Musician Brenda Mtambo said she still can't believe she has survived the year after she lost her grandmother. In a moving social media post, she opened up about her year-long struggle with grief since last May. The award-winning artist, known for her powerful voice and soulful performances, revealed the profound emotional turmoil she experienced during what she describes as one of the most challenging periods of her life. 'I still can't believe I survived this past year,' Mtambo wrote in a heartfelt reflection shared with her followers. 'From suicidal thoughts to deep depression, rapid anxiety attacks, and complicated family dynamics - losing my grandmother, the love of my life, shifted my entire world.' Beyond personal grief, Mtambo expressed gratitude that she's 'still standing' despite the turmoil. 'It's been a year… and somehow, by the grace of God, I'm still standing. I honestly have no idea how I made it through, but I know Jesus carried me every step of the way. Praise be to God who makes all things new.' Just five months after laying her grandmother to rest, the musician said her mental health was deteriorating, revealing in a lengthy post that it was triggered by her grandmother's death. She opened up about her grief, admitting it might be too much information, but she said,' I am scared; not talking is killing me.' 'I don't look like I am sick, I know, but I am dying from grief, anxiety... so depressed. I wanted to heal away from the public, but I work in public, and I have to show up the way I am showing up in these pictures. Losing my grandmother triggered me, and the world feels empty.' She added that because people would never see her sad in public, she was struggling to sleep, and her mind was on a spiral. 'I am experiencing grief, but it is affecting my mental health, and I know it can be so polished from outside. I know I can hide it so well, too, not hide it, but I can function very well; it feels like I need to be busy every day to deal with not feeling anything.'
