'A testament to the power of the TSU community': Alumni give $600K to reduce seniors' debt

Tennessee State University alumni gave more than $600,000 in 2024 to reduce the student account balances and debts of the school's seniors preparing to graduate, the school announced Thursday. The money was raised through the end-of-year "Close The Gap" campaign in December by the public, historically Black university in Nashville. TSU alumni Amos and Brenda Otis helped bolster the campaign by matching every dollar donated to the university on Giving Tuesday, which fell on Dec. 3. "As an alumnus myself, I am extremely proud of the fact that alumni giving has increased from previous years," interim TSU President Dwayne Tucker said in a news release. "Tennessee State University is a great institution, and with continued alumni and community support, this university will continue to be a key part of the community and this city's growth." According to the release, the money raised is critical for making sure seniors have the support they need to finish their degrees and graduate. "Each dollar raised was a testament to the power of the TSU community," LoLita Toney, TSU vice president of Institutional Advancement, said in the release. "Every gift, no matter the size, reflects a shared belief in our students and their ability to change the world."
