Popular Canadian coffee and doughnut chain Tim Hortons opens in Norfolk
Popular Canadian fast food chain Tim Hortons is selling its original blend coffee, hand-dipped and glazed doughnuts and made-to-order breakfast sandwiches in Norfolk.
The chain opened a location at the former Boston Market site at Poplar Hall Drive and North Military Highway. As of Monday, customers could only use the drive-thru. Staff said the store needs to work out some kinks.
The name might sound familiar to some because in 2010, 'Timmies' had a restaurant at Naval Station Norfolk but it closed years ago.
The Norfolk restaurant is the only location in Virginia, according to the company website, and folks are delighted it's in Hampton Roads.
'Going to Tim Hortons is a Canadian tradition,' said Brendan O'Hallarn, a Canada native who works at Old Dominion University.
His sister warned him when he moved to Williamsburg 17 years ago that the Hortons pangs would never go away. He gets his fix every summer when he drives to Ontario. 'Tim's' is the first stop he makes minutes after crossing the border.
Now, he doesn't have to travel far. He waited in a long drive-thru line on Saturday and posted on social media that every Canadian expat in Hampton Roads is planning a trip there.
U.S. customers can join the movement and grab some goodies too. The coffee shop is planning a grand opening. The company hasn't responded to repeated questions for details.
