Astros' Jeremy Pena out for second straight game due to illness
Astros' Jeremy Pena out for second straight game due to illness originally appeared on The Sporting News Astros' shortstop Jeremy Pena is out of the lineup for the second straight night due to illness as Houston faces the Baltimore Orioles at Daikin Park in game two of the series. Mauricio Dubon will start at shortstop for the second consecutive night. However, Pena has markedly improved in the past 24 hours and is at the ballpark today, per Brian McTaggart. 'He's going to do some baseball activity and try to sweat some of that stuff off,' Astros manager Joe Espada said. 'He's a lot better today.' Pena felt 'under the weather' before the series opener vs. Baltimore and underwent some tests, according to Espada. Houston could have used his bat in its 7-0 loss to the Orioles, whose starting pitcher Brandon Young had a perfect game through 7.2 innings until Ramon Urias recorded a hit—the Astros' only baserunner of the game. Pena is batting .318/.373/.492 this season with 13 homers and 45 RBI in 93 games. He recently returned from the 10-day injured list, where he was placed on June 30 because of a small rib fracture on his left side. Pena was activated at the start of the month and played in 11 straight games until he was sidelined this series. He's hitting .289 with five extra-base hits and five RBI in August. The Astros haven't had luck with injuries this year, as it was announced today by McTaggart that All-Star closer Josh Hader is likely out for the remainder of the regular season because of a left shoulder strain.

Astros to make highly anticipated decision on top prospect ahead of Rangers series
The Houston Astros are sitting atop the AL West and are in solid shape to make a run for a bye in the AL postseason field. But the team has dealt with some injuries lately. Fortunately, help is on the way. According to Astros reporter for Brian McTaggart, the Astros are calling up number one prospect Brice Matthews for their series against the Texas Rangers, right before the 2025 All-Star break. Matthews, the Astros' number one prospect and the 98th-ranked prospect according to prospect rankings, is finally getting the call to the big leagues. He's been in Triple-A all season long and has been playing great, and more than justified the call-up. Advertisement Through 73 games in Triple-A this season, Matthews had a .283 batting average, a .400 on-base percentage, and a .476 slugging percentage. His .876 OPS is the highest he's had in a season for the Astros since being drafted in the first round of the 2023 MLB draft. In his 269 at-bats in the minors, Matthews had 76 hits, 51 runs scored, 12 doubles, five triples, 10 home runs, 39 RBIs, 50 walks, and 98 strikeouts. He also stole 25 bases, getting caught six times in the process. MORE: Astros trade proposal sends top prospect to Rays for All-Star second baseman It's a long-awaited debut looming for the Astros' top prospect, and with the current state of the roster, his addition will be imperative. In the minors this season, Matthews has experience playing center field (one game), second base (58 games), and shortstop (six games). Advertisement When he makes his Astros debut for the weekend series against the division rival Rangers, Matthews will likely start at second base or shortstop. With all the injuries the Astros have suffered, he may even get some run in the outfield. But, regardless of where he plays, being able to bring the top prospect up to the Majors is a very exciting time for the Astros. The 23-year-old will provide a nice spark in the lineup, as he's set to make his MLB debut during the weekend series against the division rival Rangers. MORE MLB NEWS:
