Red Sox roster moves: Rookie righty (2.29 ERA in AAA) called up for first MLB stint, reliever DFA'd

BOSTON — The Red Sox have spent much of the last few weeks shuffling their pitching staff with a constant parade of roster moves. That continued Monday before the team's series opener against the Rays at Fenway. Boston selected the contract of right-hander Brian Van Belle, who will be active for his first big league stint, and designated Robert Stock for assignment. Van Belle will wear No. 77. Advertisement (UPDATE: After initially announcing the Van Belle/Stock news, the Red Sox also confirmed the big news that top prospect Roman Anthony is being promoted for his MLB debut with Wilyer Abreu going to the 10-day injured list with a left oblique strain. Boston designated outfielder/first baseman Ryan Noda for assignment to clear a 40-man spot. You can read about Anthony's promotion here.) Van Belle, 28, joined the organization as an undrafted free agent out of the University of Miami in 2020, when the draft was shortened to five rounds. He has never been considered a top organizational prospect but pitched his way into the conversation with a strong showing at Triple-A Worcester. In 12 games (8 starts) for Worcester this season, he has gone 5-1 while recording a 2.29 ERA and striking out 41 batters in 51 innings. The right-hander has earned the win in each of his last five games (four starts), posting a 1.55 ERA (5 ER/29.0 IP) and 0.86 WHIP in that span. 'Happy for him. Very happy for him. A great story,' said manager Alex Cora, a fellow Miami alum. 'He signed after the weird draft. I followed his career and for him to get here is amazing. He had some good outings down there. One thing he can do is pitch.' Advertisement Van Belle will likely be used as the long man out of the bullpen with Cooper Criswell back in Triple-A after being optioned. Van Belle takes the place of Stock, a 35-year-old journeyman who has made two appearances in the big leagues this season and allowed two earned runs while walking three batters Sunday in New York. 'We'll use him the right way,' Cora said. 'Obviously, yesterday wasn't perfect in that aspect. We needed an arm and he's here with us.' Stock has a 3.09 ERA with 63 strikeouts in 12 games (nine starts) for Worcester this season. Boston will have a week to waive, trade or release him. In April, he cleared waivers and was outrighted to Worcester after being designated in a similar fashion. More Red Sox coverage Read the original article on MassLive.

Red Sox trade pitcher to Reds

The post Red Sox trade pitcher to Reds appeared first on ClutchPoints. Sitting a game below .500 at 35-36, the Boston Red Sox have made a notable mid-season move, trading right-handed pitcher Brian Van Belle to the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for cash considerations. This shift reflects a strategic realignment by Boston, which designated Van Belle for assignment on June 11th. Advertisement The 28-year-old, who was recently dominating in Triple-A Worcester, now finds a new home with the Reds as both teams reshape their rosters during a pivotal stretch of the season. Van Belle's journey has been nothing short of inspiring. After signing with the Red Sox as an undrafted free agent in 2020, he worked his way through the minors. This season, he was especially impressive in Triple-A Worcester, boasting a 5-1 record with a 2.29 ERA across 12 outings. His final five starts were particularly dominant, with a 1.55 ERA that caught the attention of scouts across MLB. Yet with Boston's deep pitching prospect pool, he was the odd man out. The Reds, meanwhile, capitalized on an opportunity. According to USA Today's Bob Nightengale, who broke the story on X, formerly known as Twitter, the Reds acquired Van Belle and immediately assigned him to Triple-A Louisville. 'The Cincinnati Reds acquire Boston Red Sox right-handed pitcher Brian Van Belle for cash considerations.' Advertisement It's a smart, low-risk move for Cincinnati. Although they sit seven games back, they remain in the hunt—especially if they can stay afloat and heat up at the right time to spark a potential playoff push. Adding Van Belle, who can pitch as both a starter or reliever, provides versatility and upside. Van Belle's strong performance in Triple-A Worcester shows he's more than just organizational depth. With a 5-1 record and 2.29 ERA, he brings proven production. For the Cincinnati Reds, this move adds immediate depth to their pitching corps. For the Red Sox, it's a calculated decision, shedding a talented arm to maintain roster flexibility amid a surplus of promising young pitchers in their farm system. Red Sox Announce Trade Sending Minor League Pitcher Brian Van Belle to Reds for Cash

Red Sox Announce Trade Sending Minor League Pitcher Brian Van Belle to Reds for Cash originally appeared on Athlon Sports. While the Red Sox are making these moves, ahead of their second game against the New York Yankees, they Red Sox made a trade. Advertisement The Red Sox announced on Twitter/X that they have made a trade with the Cincinnati Reds, sending Minor League pitcher Brian Van Belle to the Reds for cash considerations. While Van Belle hasn't been a factor for the Red Sox in the Major Leagues in 2025, he has been playing well down in Triple-A. But, the Red Sox designated him for assignment on June 10th, and the Reds swooped in ahead of waivers and sent cash to Boston for the 28-year-old pitcher. The right-hander has yet to make his MLB debut, but after a strong start to the 2025 season, he could make his debut with the Reds. At Triple-A Worcester, in eight starts and across 12 games, Van Belle had a 2.29 ERA and a 5-1 record. Across 51 innings pitched, Van Belle had an impressive 41 strikeouts to just seven walks. Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora (13) is shown in the dugout before the game against the Atlanta Braves at Truist Zanine-Imagn Images The damage, albeit limited, done to him came in the form of batters hitting .240 off his pitching. But even then, his WHIP of 1.06 was very solid, and rounded out a very strong start to the year for Van Belle. Advertisement Boston's decision to DFA the longtime Minor League pitcher is a questionable one, as he's been dominant in Triple-A for the WooSox. Fortunately, the Red Sox have a solid bullpen and a rotation that is steadily improving. The return of cash for Van Belle isn't a lot, but as the Red Sox had already designated him for assignment, any return is well worth it. The Reds acquired Van Belle for cash, as the Red Sox made a minor roster move ahead of their second game of their home series against the Yankees.
