How to watch Padres at Brewers series this weekend, as San Diego scraps for NL West lead

Two playoff hopefuls get into a three-game tangle Friday through Sunday, with the second-place San Diego Padres visiting the surging Milwaukee Brewers. Here's to a weekend of waddling Bratwursts and bright yellow slides. Milwaukee hits this weekend with the ninth-most runs per game, but it is 21st in batting average and 23rd in homers. But the Brew Crew is putting numbers on the board with elite base running and a solid walk rate. Speedy second baseman Brice Turang leads the lineup in WAR, and he's one of four Brewers with double-digit steals through the first third of 2025. The other three: Jackson Chourio, a prodigious five-tool Venezuelan, former MVP Christian Yelich and Gold Glove ascendant Sal Frelick. Advertisement Pat Murphy's team was 25-28 after a May 24 loss to Pittsburgh. Since then, Milwaukee enjoyed consecutive series sweeps, with back-to-back walkoffs versus Boston and a high-scoring statement-maker in Philadelphia. It took two of three against Cincinnati earlier this week. The Chicago Cubs still have a comfortable hold on the NL Central, but the Brewers are playing like a playoff team right now. San Diego is down to a simmer after its feverish start to the season, finishing May at 13-13 with a minus-14 run differential. The Pads beat rival San Francisco on Monday and Tuesday, but lost 6-5 on Wednesday and then 3-2 Thursday night. Still, they find themselves just two games back of the defending champion Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West. The Padres' stars are doing their respective things thus far. Fernando Tatís Jr. is on pace for another 30-HR, 30-SB campaign. Manny Machado is No. 10 in MLB batting average. And 22-year-old Jackson Merrill looks like the future of the franchise. He was ninth in NL MVP voting last year (as a rookie), and he's increased every part of his slash line (plus OPS) in 2025. Mike Shildt's squad is below league average in scoring and power numbers, but San Diego is winning on the hill with the eighth-best collective ERA. The Padres lead baseball with 10 shutouts in 61 games. Friday night starts with two right-handers, Randy Vásquez (3–4, 3.99 ERA) and Chad Patrick (3–4, 2.97 ERA). Saturday's national TV broadcast showcases RHP Stephen Kolek, who is 3-1 in his first six Padres starts, and Milwaukee LHP José Quintana, the 14-season veteran with a clean 4-1 record and a sub-3 ERA. San Diego will deploy righty Ryan Bergert to open Sunday's finale. He did four one-run bids to start the season, then put in a career-high five innings of work against the Giants on Tuesday. Bergert will be matched by fellow righty Aaron Civale, an attempted reclamation project for the Brewers. He's a paltry 15th percentile in fastball velocity and has been leaning on his cutter and sinker. Yelich's grand slam in the 10th inning lifts Brewers to 5-1 win over the Red Sox

MILWAUKEE — Christian Yelich hit a grand slam in the 10th inning for his first career-walk-off homer, giving the Milwaukee Brewers a 5-1 win over the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday night. With Joey Ortiz on at second, Brice Turang lined a four-seam fastball off Liam Hendriks (0-2) for a base hit that moved Ortiz to third. Jackson Chourio walked. One out later, Yelich drove a 1-1 pitch 400 feet over the wall in right-center.

Brewers' Brice Turang Looks To Add Offense To His Outstanding Defense

Milwaukee Brewers' Brice Turang looks on during the second inning of a baseball game against the ... More Baltimore Orioles, Monday, May 19, 2025, in Milwaukee. (AP Photo/Aaron Gash) Brice Turang has proven he can play elite defense at the major-league level. The Milwaukee Brewers second baseman won the National League Platinum Glove in 2024 – which is awarded to the league's top fielder – in his first full MLB season. Turang was also the NL Gold Glove second baseman. He had 22 defensive runs saved and committed just seven errors in 626 total chances. 'It was really cool,' Turang said of winning the Platinum Glove. 'It's hard to explain. I always just tell people like you strive to be the best defender that you can be for your team and then there are awards for it, which is really cool. 'You devote your whole life to this game, and you work really hard at these things, so to get somewhat of a reward is nice.' The next step for the 25-year-old Turang is becoming a bigger factor offensively. Turang was off to a good start with the bat this season until going 2 for 25 in his last six games. Still, he is hitting better than his first two seasons in the big leagues. In 52 games this year, Turang is batting .269/.339/.355 with four home runs and 13 stolen bases. Though he stole 50 bases in 155 games last year, his slash line was just .254/.316/.349. Even though Turang had a rough week at the plate, he made one of his two hits count. His RBI double in the eighth inning on Sunday broke a tie and lifted the Brewers to a 6-5 victory over the Pirates in Pittsburgh. 'I'm not even really scuffling,' Turang said. 'I'm hitting balls hard, just right to people. You feel like every ball you hit hard is right to someone and every ball you don't hit hard is right to someone. 'You just have to keep moving forward, because the more you try, you can go down a big rabbit hole. I feel good. I feel really comfortable at the plate." Turang came into the season confident that he would improve offensively. The Brewers' 2024 season ended in heartbreak as they lost to the New York Mets in three games in a NL Wild Card Series. Turang shined, though, going 5 for 11 with three doubles. PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA - MAY 23: Adam Frazier #26 of the Pittsburgh Pirates is tagged out at ... (Photo by) 'I'm just learning, understanding the game, understanding my swing, what adjustments you have to make and stuff like that,' said Turang, the Brewers' first-round draft pick with the 21st overall selection in 2018 from Santiago High School in Corona, Calif. 'I think it's just having time in the league and being able to make the adjustments and learning,' Turang would love to get back to the postseason. The Brewers are two-time defending NL Central champions and have made the playoffs six of the seven seasons. However, the Brewers have been unable to perform their small-market so far this year as they are 27-28 and tied for third place in the division, 6 ½ games behind the first-place Cubs. Brewers manager Pat Murphy has said he believes his team has lost it 'edge.' Yet Turang is confident that the Brewers are ready to get on a hot streak. 'We've got a good team,' Brice Turang said. 'It's just putting all the pieces together and that'll happen, it'll turn. It seems like every year, though, people count us out and say, 'Well, they can't keep going to the playoffs every year because they're a small-market team.' But we'll be fine. We're going to play a lot better.'

Durbin and Turang hit back-to-back doubles in the 8th to help the Brewers top the Pirates

Caleb Durbin and Brice Turang hit back-to-back doubles in the eighth inning to help the Milwaukee Brewers top the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-5 on Sunday. Durbin sent a sweeper from Ryan Borucki (1-2) to the track in left field, driving in two and tying it at 5. Turang brought him home with a ball down the line in left. Jared Koenig (3-1) got the win despite allowing two runs in 1 2/3 innings. Trevor Megill struck out two in the ninth while recording his ninth save. Adam Frazier drove in three runs for Pittsburgh, including two on a two-out double that put the Pirates ahead 5-3 in the seventh. He hit an RBI single in the sixth before Tommy Pham tied it at 3 on a single to left. The Brewers scored three off Bailey Falter in the first before Oneil Cruz cut it to 3-1 with a massive drive in the third. Cruz's team-leading 11th homer had a 122.9 mph exit velocity for the hardest-hit ball since Statcast began tracking in 2015. He sent a fastball from Logan Henderson 432 feet into the Allegheny River past the Clemente Wall in right for his third homer in three games. Henderson, a 23-year-old rookie who won his first three starts in the majors, struck out six in five innings. Durbin fouled off the first five pitches before hitting his tying double in the eighth. Cruz already had the record for the hardest-hit ball on a 122.4 mph single on Aug. 24, 2022. Giancarlo Stanton had the hardest-hit homer at 121.7 mph while with Miami on Aug. 9, 2017. Up next Brewers: RHP Chad Patrick (2-4, 3.23 ERA) takes the mound on Monday against Boston. LHP Garrett Crochet (4-3, 1.98 ERA) starts for the Red Sox. Pirates: LHP Andrew Heaney (3-3, 2.91 ERA) starts on Monday in the opener of a three-game series in Arizona. RHP Ryne Nelson (1-1, 4.60 ERA) gets the ball for the Diamondbacks. ___ AP MLB:
